Federal judge allows Pac-12’s lawsuit against Mountain West over poaching fees to go forward | Sports

A federal judge has allowed the Pac-12 Conference’s lawsuit against the Mountain West Conference over $55 million in “poaching fees” to go forward. Northern District of California Senior Judge Claudia Wilken denied the Mountain West’s motion to dismiss the case on Tuesday. She set an initial case management conference for Nov. 18. “The Pac-12 Conference is pleased that the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California denied the Mountain West Conference’s motion to dismiss,” the Pac-12 said in a statement. “We will move forward with our case. The ruling allows our antitrust and related claims to proceed. We remain confident in our position and focused on advancing academic excellence, athletic achievement, and the tradition that has defined the Pac-12 for more than a century.” The conferences failed to reach an agreement by a July deadline for mediation, and the Pac-12 requested the hearing on a pending motion to dismiss. The Pac-12 and some of its new schools filed lawsuits last year, claiming the poaching clause it agreed to when it signed a scheduling agreement for its football teams for last season was invalid. The clause called for payments to the Mountain West of $10 million for the first

Monday Cooldown — Figuring out Utah State’s defense, Jacob Conover’s debut | Sports

The defense under first-year head coach Bronco Mendenhall and his longtime defensive coordinator, Nick Howell, gives off good vibes. It’s a unit that swarms to the ball fairly well, tackles fairly well and has some solid playmakers. In two previous Monday Cooldown articles, we’ve looked to varying degrees at the success the team has had in stopping the run. On top of all that, members of the Aggies’ defensive unit have spoken optimistically about their potential, depth and overall ability to win games through their efforts. The only problem is that vibes do not stop opposing offenses. And outside of one game, Utah State has not consistently stopped any FBS offense. Utah State’s defense entered the 2025 as the unit that would hopefully put a woeful 2024 defensive performance a long ways in the rearview mirror. The 2024 Aggies allowed the second-most points ever in program history (453 points, or 37.8 per game) and the second-most total yards (5,641, or 470.1 per game). An uncomfortable fact is that 2023 wasn’t too far behind 2024 in terms of lacking defense. So how are the 2025 Aggies doing in pulling off an about-face on the defensive competence trend? They are worryingly close

High-powered Vanderbilt offense overwhelms Utah State | Sports

For about a quarter-and-a-half, Utah State was competing with No. 18 Vanderbilt, holding the lead for a few minutes of the opening half and putting up several scoring drives. But in the end, it simply wouldn’t be enough as the Commodores’ offense ran rampant over the Aggies’ defense to hand them a 55-35 defeat. Utah State’s offense got out to almost as good of a start as the team could hope for. Bryson Barnes completed 15 of 22 passes in the game with 161 passing yards, three touchdown passes and 48 rushing yards. However, Barnes left the game early in the fourth quarter with an undisclosed injury after fumbling the ball on an 18-yard scramble. USU head coach Bronco Mendenhall declined to give any update on Barnes’ status or provide any details about the injury. Backup quarterback Jacob Conover stepped in and completed 11 of 14 passes for 92 yards and two touchdown in the final quarter in reserve. “Wow, did he do a nice job stepping in,” Mendenhall said of Conover. “Poised and executed really well. And I was really proud of him coming in after Bryson went down.” Barnes’ efforts helped scrape together three scoring drives in the

Utah State making second trip to SEC country, this time to take on No. 18 Vanderbilt | Sports

This weekend Utah State will either make a booming announcement to the country or find itself licking wounds and looking for ways to regain lost momentum at the end of a matchup with No. 18 Vanderbilt.  Utah State has generated quite a bit of much-needed positive momentum in the early part of its season. Preseason predictions placed the Aggies as a fringe bowl team, at best, with the more pessimistic guesses placing them as one of the 20-30 worst teams in the nation. They’ve climbed up from that floor to a 3-1 record, USU’s best start since the 2021 Mountain West championship season, and many of those metrics that had the Aggies in the bottom 30 now have them as roughly average for the FBS. All of that momentum is now on the line with a buy game against a ranked SEC opponent. Again. This week it’s No. 18 Vanderbilt. Three weeks ago it was then 19th-ranked Texas A&M (who is now ranked ninth in the AP Poll). The Aggies took their lumps in a 44-22 loss against one of the best teams in the country and rebounded to win their first conference game and rout an FCS team. Can
