Utah State making second trip to SEC country, this time to take on No. 18 Vanderbilt | Sports

This weekend Utah State will either make a booming announcement to the country or find itself licking wounds and looking for ways to regain lost momentum at the end of a matchup with No. 18 Vanderbilt.  Utah State has generated quite a bit of much-needed positive momentum in the early part of its season. Preseason predictions placed the Aggies as a fringe bowl team, at best, with the more pessimistic guesses placing them as one of the 20-30 worst teams in the nation. They’ve climbed up from that floor to a 3-1 record, USU’s best start since the 2021 Mountain West championship season, and many of those metrics that had the Aggies in the bottom 30 now have them as roughly average for the FBS. All of that momentum is now on the line with a buy game against a ranked SEC opponent. Again. This week it’s No. 18 Vanderbilt. Three weeks ago it was then 19th-ranked Texas A&M (who is now ranked ninth in the AP Poll). The Aggies took their lumps in a 44-22 loss against one of the best teams in the country and rebounded to win their first conference game and rout an FCS team. Can

Week 4 Mountain West Watch — USU, SDSN, UNM rising | Sports

I took an unintended week off from Mountain West Watch but with half the team off in Week 3, that wasn’t the worst time for it. So, let’s dive back into the Mountain West after Week 4, with the full complement of standings, power rankings, and the biggest risers and fallers following the first full week of college football in the west. Mountain West Football Standings (post-Week 4, 2025) Rk Team Record MW Record AP Poll 1 Fresno State 4-1 1-0 — 2 Utah State 3-1 1-0 — 3 Boise State 2-1 1-0 — 4 UNLV 4-0 0-0 RV (34th) 5 San Diego State 2-1 0-0 — 6 New Mexico 2-1 0-0 — 7 Wyoming 2-2 0-0 — 8 Colorado State 1-2 0-0 — 9 San Jose State 1-2 0-0 — 10 Nevada 1-3 0-0 — 11 Hawaii 3-2 0-1 — 12 Air Force 1-2 0-2 — This is the part of the season where the standings look a bit odd since some of the teams have played conference games and others haven’t. Utah State, Boise State and Fresno State all sit at the top at 1-0 with Hawaii down near the bottom, and poor Air Force as the only

Utah State men’s basketball hosts exhibition to benefit recruitment and retention fund | Sports

LOGAN, Utah – Utah State men’s basketball will unofficially open its 2025-26 campaign with an exhibition contest against Seattle, with all proceeds from the game going directly into the team’s recruitment and retention fund to benefit internal name, image and likeness (NIL).  “This game is about more than basketball, it’s about investing in the future of our program,” said Utah State head coach Jerrod Calhoun. “All proceeds from this game will go directly into our recruitment and retention fund, which allows us to recruit and retain the type of student-athletes who make Utah State special. For fans who are not in a position to make a large donation, this is a simple way to show their support and make a real impact.”  Fans can get their first look at this year’s team when the Aggies host the Redhawks inside of Dee Glen Smith Spectrum on Saturday, Oct. 18, at 1 p.m. The game will not be streamed or televised, and will not be included in season ticket packages.  Tickets for the exhibition are on sale now, with adult general admission tickets available for $20 and youth general admission available for $10. Utah State students can get in free with a student

Cameron Walker introduced as new AD of Utah State | News

LOGAN – Around 15 years ago, Cameron Walker and his wife, Heather, were making the drive through Cache Valley. As many visitors do, they stopped at Aggie Ice Cream for a quick treat of Aggie Blue Mint. Walker had been working in athletic departments for several years, with eyes on eventually finding himself at the top of the chain of command somewhere. In that moment, while enjoying one of Cache Valley’s delights, Heather quipped, “wouldn’t this be a cool athletic director job?” Walker kept his eyes on Utah State over the years, seeing the job open multiple times while he made a name for himself as an administrator at Utah Valley then later University of Central Florida (UCF) and Tennessee. In 2023 when the job opened again after John Hartwell’s departure, Walker even reached out to potentially throw his hat in the ring. “I reached out last time, but it just wasn’t the right time,” Walker said. Two years later it was the right time. Walker has solidified himself as a rising star among his peers, well-regarded in a tough, competitive industry and is now the 13th director of athletics at Utah State University. Walker’s status as a rising star

Monday Cooldown — Aggies suddenly look like dark horse MW contenders | Sports

One of the most interesting thoughts from over the weekend has been this question: Can Utah State be a contender in the Mountain West this season? It might seem like a crazy idea home to only the minds of Aggie fans. But it’s one that will likely have to be reckoned with by a lot of fans from other MW teams that wrote off USU as being in a full-on rebuild year. The thing that puts nuance into this question is that the Aggies starting 3-1 isn’t all that surprising. My own preseason preview series predicted Utah State would be 3-1 by this point in the season, saying they’d have close wins over UTEP and Air Force, a blowout loss to Texas A&M and a blowout win over McNeese. I wasn’t exactly off by all that much in those assertions, save for nitpicking the fact the Aggies winning by 19 against Air Force probably doesn’t fall within definitions of “close.” And yet, my own preseason predictions as a whole put the Aggies at around 6-6, maybe 7-5 or 5-7 depending on whether they were lucky or unlucky in some 50/50 games. So what’s changed? The Aggies are meeting the most

What Bronco Mendenhall had to say about Utah State’s new AD | Sports

LOGAN – During his weekly press conference earlier today, Utah State football head coach Bronco Mendenhall was asked about his new boss, the recently announced next athletics director for the Aggies, Cameron Walker. Mendenhall had already met with Walker prior to the announcement as the coach was consulted throughout the process of hiring the new AD. “The process was really extensive, obviously, right? President Smith had a chance to visit with each candidate. There was a search firm. There also was a search committee, as well as there were a number of coaches that were on a separate panel,” Mendenhall said. “And then independent of all of that, I had a chance to visit with the finalists in person.” Mendenhall spoke glowingly of the experience and background Walker will bring to the position. Walker completed a Juris Doctorate at Arkansas following his time as an athlete in baseball at both Ricks College and Southern Virginia. He’s since held numerous roles across time at Utah Valley University, UCF and most recently at Tennessee where Walker was the senior deputy athletics director and chief strategy officer. His many duties across those jobs included NCAA compliance, legal affairs, facilities, NIL fundraising and working

Utah State University has announced the hiring of Tennessee Senior Deputy Athletics Director and Chief Strategy Officer Cameron Walker as the Aggies’ next director of athletics. Walker will fill the role vacated on July 21 by former AD Diana Sabau, who filled the position at USU for just over 700 days before leaving to take the deputy AD job at Maryland. Interim AD Sandy Barbour had filled the role since Sabau’s mid-summer departure. “I am honored by the opportunity to lead Utah State Athletics and to continue building on the department’s positive momentum as it integrates into the Pac-12,” Walker said in the university’s press release Sunday afternnon. “Utah State has a promising future and significant potential, and I look forward to helping bring that vision to life. My family and I are excited to get to Cache Valley.” Walker is a native of Rexburg, Idaho, competing as an athlete in baseball at both Ricks College (now BYU-Idaho) and later Southern Virginia where he earned his bachelor’s degree. He completed his Juris Doctorate degree at Arkansas. Since completing his degrees, Walker has climbed the ladder of university leadership, starting at Utah Valley University where he held various roles, including Title IX deputy
