Utah State drops first MW game in loss at Grand Canyon | Sports

Utah State provoked a profound sense of deja vu on Saturday in a 84-74 loss at Grand Canyon. Last year, the Aggies started the season 16-1, were undefeated in Mountain West play and were ranked 22nd in the AP Top 25 Poll before losing on the road to a Jaden Henley-led UNLV team on Jan. 15. Just over a year later, USU had a 15-1 record, were undefeated in Mountain West play and were ranked 23rd in the AP Top 25 Poll before losing to a Jaden Hanley-led GCU. Grand Canyon led nearly every moment after a brief 2-0 lead for Utah State. The Aggies tied the game once in the first half, 23-23, but could never draw even after that. They came close on numerous occasions, though. The Aggies went into halftime with a field goal percentage of 32.1, but made nine of their first 14 shots in the second half, setting the stage for a few runs that came up just shy of flipping the game. Utah State had a 6-0 burst that brought it to within two, 57-55, only for Grand Canyon to score four quick unanswered points to back up by six with just under 10

Mountain West Watch Jan. 15 — Who are the contenders after the first quarter of MW play? | Sports

We’re just over a quarter of the way through Mountain West play for the 2025-26 season, so let’s check in with another edition of Mountain West Watch and see how the teams are doing. This edition will go over my latest power rankings and who would be my picks for the end-of-season awards were they to be handed out today. We’ll also go over the key matchups of the weekend to see how they could shake up the hierarchy that’s been slowly shaping over the first three weeks of conference games. I’ve used tiers in my somewhat consistent series of posting power rankings on social media but here I’m going to just keep it simple and go 1-12. Partly because boxing these teams into tiers is getting harder and harder and it’s led to me breaking my own rules. 1. Utah State (15-1, 6-0) The Aggies are far and away the top team by the metrics, ranking just outside the top 20 in most metrics and as high as 16th, which is where they sit in the NET. Jerrod Calhoun has transformed this team into one that not only has a great offense, something they had last year, but also

Utah State grinds out defensive win over Nevada | Sports

LOGAN — In its toughest Mountain West contest thus far, Utah State showed yet again it knows how to grind out wins, not just blitz their opponents into submission. When Nevada threw some of its best punches at the Aggies, they threw haymakers right back. In the end, it led to a 71-62 victory for USU on a Wednesday evening at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum. Nevada had its worst shooting percentage of the season, making only 34.4% of their shots all night and the 62 points being a season-low. Utah State put the clamps on from the very start, holding the Wolf Pack to just 2-for-12 from the field in the opening minutes. “The story tonight, the headline should be our defense,” Utah State head coach Jerrod Calhoun said. “We held a really good team to 62 points when we had a bad night (on offense). We couldn’t do that last year. So, we’ve made a lot of strides.” Utah State found new ways to make their presence known on defense. This year they’ve not been much of a shot-blocking team despite defending the paint fairly well. But on Wednesday they were elite shot-swatters as they sent back eight into

Utah State basketball vs Nevada preview (Jan. 14): How to watch, team breakdowns, projected starters, injuries (copy) | Sports

Utah State will, for the first time this season, face a team with a winning record in conference play. The Nevada Wolf Pack will come into the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum with only one loss to a Mountain West team (and it was to a San Diego State team that’s 5-0 in MW play). Rankings haven’t yet recognized Nevada as a serious threat for contention in the Mountain West, but the standings and on-court action won’t be dictated by numbers on spreadsheets. The red-hot Aggies will have to be at their best on Wednesday if they want to remain undefeated in Mountain West play. Here’s all of the necessary info ahead of this game for the Aggies. Can Utah State star guard MJ Collins get a fifth season of eligibility? | Sports

Last Thursday, both Utah State head coach Jerrod Calhoun and senior guard MJ Collins made reference to the possibility that a shift in eligibility rules could occur that would enable Collins to play a fifth season. That rule change is the five-year rule that would eliminate redshirts and eligibility waivers in favor of just giving all athletes a blanket five seasons to play no matter what happens within them. “MJ texted me last night, said, ‘Looks like we’ll be back together for another year.’ I guess some 25 year old guy got eligible,” Calhoun said. Such a rule change would allow a fifth season for Collins because he never utilized his redshirt, nor received a medical redshirt. His actual time in collegiate basketball matches with his eligibility clock. Two years at Virginia Tech from 2022 to 2024, one year at Vanderbilt in 2024-25 and now a fourth season at Utah State this year.   Exactly what recent news prompted Collins to believe that such a rule is imminent is unsure, but there have been plenty of reports indicating the opposite. Firstly, back in October 2025 an internal memo from the NCAA stated that “for the remainder of the current academic year
