Schmitt scores, Real Salt Lake wins 2-1 over Nashville – Cache Valley Daily

SANDY, Utah (AP) — Tate Schmitt scored a crucial goal in Real Salt Lake’s 2-1 win against Nashville on Saturday. Schmitt’s game-winner came in the 54th minute to put RSL (3-0-1) ahead 2-1. Maikel Chang assisted the goal. RSL also got one goal from Bobby Wood. Walker Zimmerman scored the lone goal for Nashville (1-2-1). Nashville outshot RSL 17-9, with nine shots on goal to two for RSL. Zac MacMath saved eight of the nine shots he faced for RSL. RSL next plays on Saturday against Sporting Kansas City on the road, and Nashville will visit the Columbus Crew on Saturday. Real Salt Lake scores 3 goals late, stuns New England 3-2 – Cache Valley Daily

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Tate Schmitt scored a goal in the 3rd minute of second-half stoppage time, capping a wild comeback by Real Salt Lake in a snowy 3-2 victory over the New England Revolution in MLS action on Saturday. The Revolution took a 1-0 lead into halftime when Emmanuel Boateng scored in the third minute of first-half stoppage time. Jozy Altidore, who signed with New England as a free agent, entered the game in the 60th minute and scored in the 62nd to push the Revolution’s lead to 2-0. Sergio Córdova, who signed with RSL on loan from FC Augsburg, cut the deficit in half at the 78-minute mark with his first MLS goal. Justen Glad scored in the 88th minute to knot the score at 2 and set the stage for Schmitt. Jasper Loffelsend assisted on the game-winner. The Revolution outshot RSL 12-10, but trailed in shots on goal 7-5. Zac MacMath had three saves for RSL. SANDY, Utah (AP) — Bobby Wood scored soon after a two-hour lightning delay and Zac MacMath made it stand up with five saves as Real Salt Lake earned a 1-0 victory over the Seattle Sounders at snowy Rio Tinto Stadium on Saturday. Wood’s game-winner came in the 46th minute after the weather delay halted play with two minutes left before halftime. RSL (1-0-1) outshot the Sounders (0-2-0) 13-8. MacMath saved all five shots on goal he faced for RSL. Stefan Frei saved four of the five shots he faced for the Sounders. These teams take to the pitch again on Mar. 13, with RSL visiting the New England Revolution while the Sounders host the LA Galaxy. Lundqvist grabbed the rebound, but his header sailed wide. RSL’s Kei becomes youngest player to sign with MLS club – Cache Valley Daily

Kei, a lanky 6-foot-4 product of the RSL Academy, inked a two-year deal at 14 years and 15 days, the club announced Friday. “Over the last year Axel has proven to be one of the top attacking prospects in the country. His propensity in front of goal is well beyond his years, and coupled with his elite athleticism, he projects to become a goal-scoring force in our league in the years to come,” Real Salt Lake general manager Elliot Fall said in a statement. Previously, the youngest player to sign with an MLS club was Freddy Adu, who was 153 days older than Kei when he joined D.C. United in 2004. Kei, an Ivory Coast native who grew up in Brazil before his family relocated to the United States in 2017, became the youngest-ever professional athlete for a U.S. team when he played for the lower-division Real Monarchs last year at 13 years, 8 months and 9 days old. SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Major League Soccer has approved the sale of Real Salt Lake to David Blitzer and Smith Entertainment Group. Blitzer also has an ownership stake in the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers, the NHL’s New Jersey Devils and the Premier League’s Crystal Palace. Smith Entertainment Group, led by Ryan Smith, owns the NBA’s Utah Jazz. The league’s Board of Governors announced approval of the sale Wednesday. The deal includes Rio Tinto Stadium, the RSL Academy, the MLS Next Pro team Real Monarchs and the club’s Zions Bank Training Center. A news conference introducing the new owners was set for Thursday. “David and Ryan’s teams have become synonymous with how athletics and community intersect, as they have demonstrated leading world-class organizations outside of professional soccer,” MLS Commissioner Don Garber said in a statement. “Both understand the tremendous value that sports teams bring to a community, and they are deeply committed to Utah. This is a proven ownership group that brings resources and experience to elevate every aspect of the RSL organization.” Dell Loy Hansen was the previous owner of the club but put it up for sale in August 2020 after reports surfaced that he had made racist comments.

The 45-year-old, a former U.S. national team midfielder, was head coach of Colorado from 2014 until he was fired in August 2017 with a record that season of six wins, 12 losses and four draws. He was a Houston assistant coach in 2020, then was hired by Salt Lake last Jan. 5 as an assistant to Freddy Juarez. Mastroeni was appointed interim coach on Aug. 27 when Juarez was fired with the team in sixth place in the Western Conference. Mastroeni led RSL to eight wins, eight losses and one draw over the rest of the regular season.
