(AP Photo/Rick Bowmer) SANDY, Utah (AP) — Jefferson Savarino scored early and Real Salt Lake went on to secure a spot in the MLS playoffs with a 3-1 victory over the Portland Timbers on Sunday. Rubio Mendez and Bode Hidalgo also scored for Salt Lake (12-11-11), which had not won a match since Aug. 31. RSL had just three victories in its last 16 games. The Timbers (11-10-13), rocked by scandal in the past week, needed a victory or draw over Salt Lake to make the playoffs. With the loss, Portland was eliminated. The Timbers share ownership with the Portland Thorns of the National Women’s Soccer League. Earlier this week, an investigation was released that detailed misconduct in the NWSL. The investigation looked at sexual coercion and harassment allegations leveled at a former Thorns coach. In the fallout, the club fired a pair of executives on Wednesday. (AP) — The LA Galaxy clinched a berth in Major League Soccer’s playoffs for the first time since 2019, coming from behind in a 1-1 draw against Real Salt Lake on Saturday night as Douglas Costa converted a penalty kick in the 68th minute. The playoff berth is the 20th in 27 seasons for the Galaxy, a five-time MLS champion. Eight of the 14 playoff spots have been determined, with the Galaxy joining Austin, Dallas and LAFC from the Western Conference, and defending champion New York City joined by Montreal, New York Red Bulls and Philadelphia in the Eastern Conference. LA was awarded a penalty kick by referee Kevin Stott when Riqui Puig was pulled down by Scott Caldwell but Puig’s kick was stopped in the 17th minute by goalkeeper Zac MacMath, who dived left. Brenner scores, Cincinnati wins 2-1 over Real Salt Lake – Cache Valley Daily

SANDY, Utah (AP) — Brenner’s goals were pivotal for Cincinnati in a 2-1 win against Real Salt Lake on Saturday night. Brenner’s game-winner came in the 76th minute to put Cincinnati (11-8-12) ahead 2-1. Luciano Acosta had an assist on the goal. Brenner scored all of Cincinnati’s goals in the game. Maikel Chang scored the only goal for RSL (11-11-10). RSL outshot Cincinnati 18-8, with eight shots on goal to three for Cincinnati. Roman Celentano saved seven of the eight shots he faced for Cincinnati. Zac MacMath saved one of the three shots he faced for RSL. Austin (16-9-6), which started play in 2021, became the second Western Conference team to clinch a berth this season after first-place Los Angeles FC. Djitte scored in the 60th minute, running onto Diego Fagundez’s diagonal pass and flicking the ball over goalkeeper Zac MacMath from just inside the 6-yard box. Djitte doubled the lead in the 76th with an 8-yard right-foot shot after Ethan Finlay’s attempt rebounded off the crossbar, then added another on a counterattack in the 80th from Ruben Gabrielsen’s pass. The Senegalese forward, who turns 23 next month, had scored one previous goal this season, against Orlando on May 22. Rooney debuts 15-year-old in D.C.’s draw at Real Salt Lake – Cache Valley Daily

SANDY, Utah (AP) — Matai Akinmboni became the third-youngest player in Major League Soccer history in D.C. United’s 0-0 draw against Real Salt Lake on Saturday night. D.C. United coach Wayne Rooney started Akinmboni at 15 years, 328 days. The only younger players in MLS have been D.C.’s Freddy Adu (14 years, 334 days on April 3, 2004) and Vancouver’s Alphonso Davies (15 years, 327 days of July 16, 2016). Zac MacMath made three saves for Real Salt Lake and David Ochoa had seven saves for D.C., which has the fewest points in the league and has been eliminated from playoff contention. RSL (11-9-10) had a 16-8 advantage in shots over United (7-17-6), with eight shots on goal to three. Arango sparks LAFC to 4-1 romp over Real Salt Lake – Cache Valley Daily

SANDY, Utah (AP) — Cristian Arango scored a goal in each half and Los Angeles FC cruised to a 4-1 victory over Real Salt Lake on Saturday night. Arango’s first netter gave LAFC (16-4-3) a 1-0 lead in the 9th minute, but Sergio Córdova answered three minutes later for RSL (9-8-7) to tie the match. Kellyn Acosta gave LAFC the lead for good with a goal in the 17th minute. Arango made it 3-1 in the 60th minute with his 11th goal of the season and Gareth Bale capped the scoring in the 87th. Ferreira’s 12th goal leads Dallas to 1-0 win over Salt Lake – Cache Valley Daily

SANDY, Utah (AP) — Jesús Ferreira scored his team-high 12th goal of the season in the 14th minute, leading Dallas to a 1-0 victory on Saturday night that ended Real Salt Lake’s 10-match home unbeaten streak. Ferreira connected with a left-footed shot from 8 yards off a pass from Paxton Pomykal after Paul Arriola intercepted a throw-in. Ferreira is second in Major League Soccer in scoring behind New York City’s Valentín Castellanos. The 21-year-old Ferreira became the second MLS player with 30 career goals and 20 assists at 21 or younger, according to Opta, behind New England’s Diego Fagúndez. Maarten Paes had five saves for Dallas (8-6-8). RSL (9-7-6) outshot Dallas 25-7, including 5-2 on shots on target. Zac MacMath saved one shot or RSL. Both teams play again on Saturday. SANDY, Utah (AP) — Sergio Cordova scored and Zac MacMath stopped one shot to lead Real Salt Lake to a 3-0 victory Sunday over Sporting Kansas City. Cordova put RSL (9-6-6) ahead for good at 1-0 in the 50th minute. Andrew Brody had an assist on the goal. Pablo Ruiz and Jefferson Savarino both scored once for RSL. RSL outshot Sporting KC (5-12-5) 18-5, with 10 shots on goal to one for Sporting KC. John Pulskamp saved seven of the 10 shots he faced for Sporting KC. Both teams are in action again on Saturday.
