Jerrod Calhoun to remain at Utah State, sign new contract with raise per reports | Sports

LOGAN — According to reports from CBS and The Field of 68, Utah State men’s basketball head coach Jerrod Calhoun will remain with the Aggies and will sign a new contract that will make Calhoun the second-highest paid coach in the Mountain West. The new deal with USU comes after Calhoun reportedly interviewed with West Virginia for its coaching vacancy and being the reported front-runner for the job. This past season, Calhoun led the Aggies to a 26-8 record, a third-place finish in the Mountain West (after being predicted sixth in the preseason poll) and to their third straight 26-win season and a third consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament. That wound up making Calhoun a possible target for high-major schools with bigger budgets, namely West Virginia, a program with which Calhoun has significant ties. He spent six years with West Virginia as an assistant coach under its long-time head coach Bob Huggins. The Mountaineers made runs to the Sweet 16 and Final Four while Calhoun was an assistant and this year he has repeatedly referenced those successes as valuable experiences that have helped him as a head coach with Utah State. Online rumors raged late last week and into

Utah State’s season ends in a route against UCLA in NCAA Tourney opening round | Sports

LEXINGTON, KY — History repeated itself on Thursday night in Utah State’s 72-47 loss to UCLA in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Back in 2001, the Aggies lost by 25 points, 75-50, in the second round of the Big Dance in what was the second-worst offensive performance in an NCAA Tournament game in program history (lowest is 39 points in 1939). On Thursday, Utah State lost by 25 points yet again and set a new low for tournament game points in the modern era. The opening minutes seemed to promise the energetic and highly effective USU team that was featured for much of the 26-win season. But the energy just simply didn’t last and an offense that ranked 17th in the country according to KenPom adjusted efficiency couldn’t get off the ground. Utah State made just 4 of 31 threes (12.9 percent), which is the third-worst 3-point shooting performance in team history (minimum 20 attempts), and that awful night seemed to doom the team more than most other issues that cropped up. “(UCLA) did a good job of pressuring us,” USU guard Mason Falslev said. “It’s hard to make threes when you’re rushed and they just didn’t fall, unfortunately,

Jerrod Calhoun non-committal about future at USU, praised Aggies growth as a program this year | Sports

LEXINGTON, KY — Utah State’s agonizing inability to keep a head coach longer than one or two years may be continuing this offseason as Jerrod Calhoun could head east to take on a new role. With rumors flying that he’s a frontrunner to be the next head coach at West Virginia, the current Aggies coach was asked about his future, be it in Logan or Morgantown. He gave a lengthy response, but ultimately didn’t commit to remaining with the Aggies. Here was his response to the question, in full. “I have a ton of respect for our athletic director. Diana (Sabau) took a gamble on me. We didn’t know each other. We had no relationship, no previous relationship, did not know each other at all. The first time I flew out to Utah State was in April. I can remember getting off the plane and you know seeing those mountains, and it was just hard to describe, the scenery. And instantly we had a connection. There was a really good plan. “I met with every single player and this year has been unbelievable. I’ve learned to understand the West Coast. We started to recruit the West Coast. We’ve got a top
