SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Dylan Guenther scored his 39th goal of the season, Clayton Keller had three assists to reach 56 and the Utah Mammoth beat the Nashville Predators 4-1 on Thursday night for their fifth straight victory. Less than an hour after the game, Utah (42-30-6) clinched a playoff berth in its second season when the Anaheim Ducks beat the San Jose Sharks 6-1. The Mammoth sit in the first Western Conference wild card spot with 90 points and have a six-point lead over Nashville. Kailer Yamamoto, Nick Schmaltz and captain Lawson Crouse also scored for Utah, and Karel Vejmelka stopped 29 shots. Erik Haula had Nashville’s goal and Juuse Saros made 23 saves. Yamamoto, who only played 12 NHL games last season, scored his 12th goal to open the scoring with 5:33 to go in the first period. He deflected in a puck off a cross-crease pass from Guenther for his second goal in the last three games. Schmaltz scored his 31st goal — and fifth in his last five games — on a power play 5:35 into the second for a 2-0 lead. Keller slid the puck across the crease to Schmaltz at the back door.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Clayton Keller scored on a power play 33 seconds into overtime to lift the Utah Mammoth to a 6-5 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday night. Alexander Kerfoot forced overtime with 7:04 left in regulation after tapping in a long feed from Sean Durzi, setting the stage for Utah to claim its first win over Edmonton. Nick Schmaltz scored twice in the second period to rally the Mammoth from a two-goal deficit. JJ Peterka and Logan Cooley also scored, and Karel Vejmelka had 21 saves. Curtis Lazar, Connor McDavid, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Vasily Podkolzin, and Colton Dach scored for the Oilers, who lost their second straight. Tristan Jarry made 25 stops. Utah opened the scoring in the first when Peterka converted a feed from Ian Cole at the 1:53 mark. Edmonton then scored three straight in the period. Lazar beat two defenders and slid the puck underneath Vejmelka with a well-timed backhand shot for an equalizer 11 seconds after Peterka. SANDY, Utah (AP) — Diego Luna scored his first goal of the season in the fourth minute, 19-year-old Zavier Gozo added a goal and two assists, and Real Salt Lake beat Sporting Kansas City 3-1 on Saturday. Sergi Solans also scored for RSL (3-1-1). The 23-year-old in his first MLS season has three goals in his first four career MLS starts. Rafael Cabral had two saves for Real Salt Lake. Dejan Joveljic scored his first goal of the season in the 59th minute that cut Sporting’s deficit to 2-1. Luna, as he approached the top of the penalty arc, made a quick cut and blasted a low left-foot shot that slipped inside the right post to give Salt Lake a 1-0 lead. Keller’s first three-goal game of the season came on a disputed power-play score and two empty-net goal. His man-advantage goal at 7:04 of the second period came on the deflection of a point shot by Dylan Guenther that gave Utah a 3-2 lead. The goal was originally waived off due to his stick touching the puck above the cross bar. After a video review, the referee ruled the stick was at or below the cross bar. Dylan Guenther and Lawson Crowse each had a goal and an assist for Utah (40-30-6), which continued to push for a Western Conference playoff spot. Kailer Yamamoto and Liam O’Brien, who was in the lineup after 18 games as a healthy scratch, also scored for the Mammoth, who won their fourth straight road game. Logan Cooley added two assists. Utah State announced Ben Jacobson as the 23rd head coach in men’s basketball history on Monday and introduced him Tuesday morning. The openly stated goal and hope for his tenure is to take the Aggies to at least the second weekend of the NCAA Tournament, something that has eluded the program in the entire life of the 64-plus team era of the Big Dance. With each coaching change USU’s fanbase has endured — four such transitions since 2021 — comes the uncertainty surrounding what kind of basketball the new head of the program will bring. Jerrod Calhoun brought a fairly unique matchup zone defense and a transition-heavy style on offense. Ryan Odom led the Aggies to record-breaking 3-point shooting numbers. Craig Smith injected energy into his team and the program. Danny Sprinkle provided stability and a calm demeanor for a season that began with the chaos of losing nearly the entire team. Jacobson will put his own stamp on Utah State history. And his style will be unique to his immediate predecessors, especially Calhoun. Jacobson runs a “Five-Out” offense and has used it to great effect. He generated some buzz in the 2019-20 season when his offense finished 23rd
