Hillstead, Brosterhous, Garcia? Breaking down Utah State’s pending quarterback battle | Sports

Utah State will see a new starting quarterback for the 2026 season as fan-favorite Bryson Barnes has graduated and used up all of his eligibility. And the stage has now been set for an offseason quarterback competition. The actors in this drama are ready, and will consist of returning QB/WR Anthony Garcia, Virginia transfer Grady Brosterhous, BYU transfer/former Aggie McCae Hillstead, freshman Kaleb Maryland and freshman Brady Goodman. Returning QB/WR Anthony Garcia could theoretically be in the mix, but is not expected to compete for a spot on the quarterback depth chart (more on that later). As of now, the top two candidates are probably the two transfers from power conference teams, Hillstead and Brosterhous (though the former’s status as a P4 transfer is somewhat muddied by the fact that he started his career at Utah State). Theoretically, they’d have the highest potential. That will be put to the test this spring, summer and fall when all of these players do battle behind the scenes. Here, we’ll break down as in-depth as possible both of these transfers and what they can bring to the table as a potential starter. But we won’t completely neglect Garcia or the incoming freshmen entirely

Utah State basketball vs San Diego State preview (Jan. 31): How to watch, team breakdowns, projected starters, injuries | Sports

The Aztecs are one game ahead with a 9-1 record in conference play to Utah State’s 8-2. Sergachev’s goal helps lift Utah Mammoth to 4-3 win over Florida Panthers | Sports

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) — Mikhail Sergachev scored in the third period to put Utah ahead to stay, and the Mammoth held on for a 4-3 win over the Florida Panthers on Tuesday night. Nick Schmaltz, Sean Durzi and Barrett Hayton also scored goals for the Mammoth, who have won nine of their last 11 games and played without top goal-scorer Dylan Guenther, who has a lower-body injury. Vitek Vanecek made 25 saves and Durzi also had an assist. Sandis Vilmanis, Cole Schwindt and Carter Verhaeghe scored goals and Sergei Bobrovsky made 16 saves for Florida, which had a three-game winning streak snapped. Sergachev’s goal with 8:55 to play gave Utah a 3-2 lead and Hayton made it 4-2 with an empty-netter with 56 seconds to play. Verhaeghe scored with 16 seconds left to pull the Panthers within 4-3, setting up a frantic final few seconds. Schmaltz scored an unassisted short-handed goal with 4:14 to play in the first period when he picked up a loose puck just inside his own blue line, skated in alone and backhanded it past Bobrovsky. Aggies post another historic win in 32-point rout of Wyoming | Sports

LOGAN — The first 120 seconds of the Wednesday evening meeting in the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum between Utah State and Wyoming were competitve. After that, the Aggies rolled and concluded the night with a 94-62 victory over the Cowboys. It set a new record for the USU-Wyoming series for most points scored by either team and largest margin of victory in the nearly 70 years and 46 games in which the two teams have faced each other. Utah State gave up a couple early buckets to Wyoming as the Cowboys quickly went to their very solid pick-and-roll attack. Leland Walker snaked into the paint for a two-pointer to start things out and then Khaden Bennett hit a pocket pass to Gavin Gores for another easy two. That gave the visitors a 4-2 lead 90 seconds after the tip-off. Then the Aggies went on a 13-0 run and never looked back. Make it a 1⃣3⃣-0⃣ Aggie run!#AggiesAllTheWay pic.twitter.com/g4vOwwOVVG — USU Men’s Hoops (@USUBasketball) January 29, 2026 By halftime, the Aggies led 50-28, with the lead reaching as high as 38 points (90-52 with 3:58 left in the game). Mason Faslev’s fingerprints were all over the early scoring by the Aggies, scoring

Utah State Athletics launches Show Me initiative, targeting fundraising and community engagement | Sports

Utah State University’s athletics department announced its latest initiative aimed at moving the Aggies into the modern era of collegiate sports. Titled as the Show Me Initiative, it sets new targets for both fundraising and community engagement which will help Utah State stand up for itself in a time where budgets for college athletics departments around the country are ballooning. 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐌𝐞 pic.twitter.com/vOCJrIrx4n — Utah State Athletics (@USUAthletics) January 28, 2026 This new initiative is an expansion upon what USU began with its Reach and Rise campaign announced last summer as a five-year plan to raise $125 million for the athletics department. The primary difference, or addition, with the Show Me initiative is that it is more than just fundraising. It targets goals in season ticket sales and number of sponsorships for the athletics department in addition to goals surrounding fundraising and membership in its Blue A Society and Big Blue Club. Currently, Utah State has approximately 80 direct sponsors for athletics, 100 members of its Blue A Society (which requires a $5,000 per year donation with a five-year commitment) and 1,400 members of its Big Blue Club (which requires a $50 per year donation). There are also roughly 6,800

Utah State rallies from down 13 to beat Colorado State, snap losing skid | Sports

In the final seconds of Utah State’s standalone Mountain West Friday-night clash with Colorado State, the home team Rams had the ball trailing by just two points, 63-61, to the visiting Aggies. USU had clawed its way back from being down by as many as 13 points in what had been a brutal road game in Fort Collins. One more defensive stand would send the Aggies back to their airport with a much-needed away-from-home victory. One make by the Rams would send Utah State packing with its first three-game losing streak in four years. Colorado State opted to give the ball to their top offensive weapon, Kyle Jorgensen. The 6-foot-9 big, who had gotten injured early in the Ram’s humiliating 42-point defeat in Logan 34 days prior, had scored 24 points so far on the night. Jorgensen had made his first eight field goal attempts, including a career-best five 3-pointers. All that stood between Jorgensen and an overtime-forcing bucket was Utah State junior forward Karson Templin, who guarded him on a baseline post-up 20 feet from the basket.  Jorgensen threw all he could at Templin, a face-up, jab-step, left hand drive to the edge of the key and then a
