Utah State blitzes Memphis, cruises to 24-point victory | Sports

LOGAN — During what normally would have been a bye game for Utah State, the Aggies put on an offensive show for the crowd rather than rest from a grueling Mountain West schedule. They put up 99 points in an eventual 24-point win (99-75) over an athletic and capable Memphis team. The Tigers stepped onto the court owning the 34th-ranked defense according to KenPom analytics, and that showed in the opening minutes. Utah State made just two of its first 11 field goal attempts. Luckily for the Aggies, their defense responded in kind, holding Memphis to a 2-for-8 shooting mark to start the game.  The grueling defense from both sides slowed scoring for both teams up until about the 4:31 mark of the first half. At that moment, USU head coach Jerrod Calhoun made a bold lineup choice against a Memphis team that had 7-footers to spare. He subbed out Adlan Elamin and put MJ Collins in for him. That left the Aggies with a four-guard lineup — Drake Allen, Mason Falslev, Kolby King and MJ Collins — with just one big: Karson Templin. Memphis had two players taller than 6-foot-11 on the court. The move paid off in spades as Utah State

Utah State has 89 student-athletes receive Academic All-Mountain West honors from its Fall sports | Sports

LOGAN, Utah – The Mountain West announced its All-Academic teams Wednesday and Utah State had 89 student-athletes recognized from its fall sports of cross country, football, soccer and volleyball.  Of its 89 Academic All-MW selections, Utah State had 37 student-athletes from football, along with 18 from soccer, 15 from women’s cross country, 10 from men’s cross country, and nine from volleyball. Women’s cross country had the most honorees within its sport in the Mountain West, while men’s cross country tied for the second-most, football had the fifth-most and soccer tied for the fifth-most. Boise State led the MW with 97 All-Academic honorees, followed by New Mexico (96), Fresno State (93), Utah State (89), UNLV (88), Wyoming (79), San José State (77), Colorado State (75), Nevada (64), San Diego State (58), Air Force (47) and Grand Canyon (47). Bench play, 3-point shooting lifts Utah State over Fresno State | Sports

LOGAN — Fresno State entered the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum ranked as the seventh-best 3-point defenders in the nation. Opponents had shot just 28% from distance against them all year. Utah State didn’t oblige that elite-level defense and promptly sank 14 triples in a 91-78 handling of the Bulldogs on Spectrum Magic Night in Logan. Those 14 long-distance makes were the most made by the Aggies against a Division I opponent this season. And it by far eclipsed the mere five USU hit at Fresno State in the Dec. 30 matchup between the two sides. Freshman guard Elijah Perryman hit a season-high four from the outside. Fellow freshman Adlan Elamin hit a pair as did Zach Keller (a season-best for him). MJ Collins and Kolby King had three triples apiece. Utah State head coach Jerrod Calhoun has often tied 3-point percentage to effective passing — the Aggies had 20 assists to just nine turnovers on Tuesday — and praised his team’s effectiveness in that regard over the last few games. It also helped that Utah State just went out and fired away, which also pleased Calhoun. “Our volume of threes is not where I’d like it to be. Tonight, it was awesome,” Calhoun

Utah State escapes disaster, holds off late Wyoming rally | Sports

As the clock ticked under three minutes to play, Utah State’s road game in Laramie against the Wyoming Cowboys could hardly be going better. Sure, the home team had shot above-average from three and made life very difficult for the visiting Aggies in the first 37 minutes. But USU had made 12 of its last 14 field goal attempts and were leading by 11 points, 78-67. However, much like Wyoming had done all night, every haymaker by the Mountain West’s first-place team was answered in full. And when MJ Collins missed a free throw with 13 seconds, the Cowboys sprinted down the court with a chance for a game-winning shot that came up just short. That allowed Utah State to escape “Laradise” with an 85-83 win in a game which they were favored to win by nearly double digits. “I haven’t watched the tape so I don’t want to [be] quick to judge, but [we were] just very discombobulated,” USU head coach Jerrod Calhoun said of the final minutes. “As the momentum shifted our attention to detail and our understanding [of] time, score, different things, were not very good.” While the final three minutes could be a story unto itself,

Hillstead, Brosterhous, Garcia? Breaking down Utah State’s pending quarterback battle | Sports

Utah State will see a new starting quarterback for the 2026 season as fan-favorite Bryson Barnes has graduated and used up all of his eligibility. And the stage has now been set for an offseason quarterback competition. The actors in this drama are ready, and will consist of returning QB/WR Anthony Garcia, Virginia transfer Grady Brosterhous, BYU transfer/former Aggie McCae Hillstead, freshman Kaleb Maryland and freshman Brady Goodman. Returning QB/WR Anthony Garcia could theoretically be in the mix, but is not expected to compete for a spot on the quarterback depth chart (more on that later). As of now, the top two candidates are probably the two transfers from power conference teams, Hillstead and Brosterhous (though the former’s status as a P4 transfer is somewhat muddied by the fact that he started his career at Utah State). Theoretically, they’d have the highest potential. That will be put to the test this spring, summer and fall when all of these players do battle behind the scenes. Here, we’ll break down as in-depth as possible both of these transfers and what they can bring to the table as a potential starter. But we won’t completely neglect Garcia or the incoming freshmen entirely

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Nick Schmaltz had his second hat trick of the season and added two assists for a five-point game in the Utah Mammoth’s 6-2 victory over the Vancouver Canucks on Monday night. RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Jordan Staal’s goal with 29.4 seconds left gave the Carolina Hurricanes three goals in the final two minutes for a 5-4 victory over the Utah Mammoth on Thursday night. The Hurricanes became the first NHL team in more than 30 years and third overall to rally from two goals down in the last two minutes to win in regulation. Utah State basketball vs San Diego State preview (Jan. 31): How to watch, team breakdowns, projected starters, injuries | Sports

Utah State has gotten itself back on a winning streak thanks to back-to-back wins against Colorado State and Wyoming. But those squads are middling teams in the conference. The Aggies must now take on the team that took over their spot at the top of the Mountain West standings: San Diego State. The Aztecs are one game ahead with a 9-1 record in conference play to Utah State’s 8-2. A win by the Aggies would force a tie at the top (with a tiebreaker to USU for the time being) while a win for SDSU would mean a commanding lead as they’d have wins over both second place and third place teams (USU and New Mexico). Here’s all of the necessary info ahead of this crucial battle for supremacy in the Mountain West.
