Utah State to hire Bronco Mendenhall as football coach according to reports | Sports

LOGAN – Following a week of rumors, speculation and even some fans pouring over flight tracker sights, some unofficial confirmation came from ESPN college football senior writer Pete Thamel late Thursday night. He reported that Utah State will hire Bronco Mendenhall as its next football head coach. Sources: Utah State is expected to hire New Mexico coach Bronco Mendenhall as the school’s next head coach. The deal is expected to be completed in the near future. pic.twitter.com/Rx65lQafW0 — Pete Thamel (@PeteThamel) December 6, 2024 The hire would officially end the tenure of interim head coach Nate Dreiling and give the Aggies their first full-time coach since the July firing of Blake Anderson. Mendenhall, a native of Utah and graduate of American Fork High School has 18 years of head coaching experience at the FBS level. His most notable accomplishments were with BYU where he spent 11 years from 2005 to 2015, going 99-43 and going to a bowl game every year of his tenure with the Cougars. His time in Provo revitalized a program that had struggled following the retirement of LaVell Edwards. In 2016, Mendenhall made the move to Virginia. Following a 2-10 initial season, the Cavaliers won at

Monday Cooldown — The 2024 Season In Review | Sports

Every season must come to its conclusion and we’ve reached the end for the 2024 Utah State Football Aggies. From a chaotic start under an interim coach to a disappointing ending with Friday’s blown lead against Colorado State. The final 4-8 record is what will be put down in the history books with the most notable impact of this season being that it’s just the third time since 2011 that the Aggies have not gone to a bowl game. Long story short, it’ll be a forgotten season. Much like 2016 or 2020, this year will be chalked up to being an outlier, a departure from the norm. Since 2011, if you exclude this year and the 2016/2020 campaigns, Utah State would have a 90-56 overall record with five bowl game wins, four 10-win season, three Mountain West title game appearances and one conference title. Fans were already looking beyond this season, as evidenced by the mere 12,000 that showed up for USU’s Senior Day — considerably down from the sold-out Utah game, 20,000 for the UNLV matchup, or even the 17,000 that showed up for the Aggies FCS game against Robert Morris. It’s hard to watch a team go through

Utah State’s 4th quarter collapse ends season on a 42-37 loss to Colorado State | Sports

The final game of the season for Utah State became a fitting tribute to the long, trouble campaign. The Aggies led by 13 points early and by 16 points late, and yet they eventually lost 35-30 to Colorado State. “We answered OK,” USU head coach Nate Dreiling said. “It’s just come down to they made more plays at the end than we did. And that’s what happens. We’re playing a good team. We’ve got to finish it. And we just weren’t able to get that one done.” Just about everything was turning up roses for the Aggies early in the game. Colorado State’s first possession ended with a punt and Utah State immediately burst down the field on offense. On the second play from scrimmage, Bryson Barnes (subbing in once again for an injured Spencer Petras) completed a 51-yard catch-and-run to Otto Tia. Though, fittingly for the theme of the game, Utah State couldn’t finish and that drive ended with a missed field goal and zero points. The next three USU drives didn’t fail to get points, though, as the ground game broke out with Barnes and Rahsul Faison leading a rush attack that tallied 140 yards on the ground

Monday Cooldown — Adaptive Aggies are finally hitting their groove | Sports

It’s refreshing to not be inventing reasons to be positive about this Utah State team. Most teams that end up starting the season 1-6 are on a crash-course for an historically-awful season with a head coach desperately trying to explain that “actually, our team is improving late in the season and is holding together well.” USU head coach Nate Dreiling does not have to conjure up talking points about why his Aggies are improving. Because they actually are. Utah State has now won three of its last four games, including a match in Wyoming, a place USU has struggled to get wins in even the best of years (see also, 2018). And while you can bring up the fact those opponents are a combined 9-24, that actually kind of helps prove the point a little. Nine weeks ago on the road against a now 3-8 Temple team (that recently fired its coach), the Aggies collapsed and lost by multiple touchdowns in an utterly humiliating showing. Cut to more recent weeks and teams with very similar records to the Owls are now getting plastered by what is only technically the same Utah State team. Here’s a look at some of the

Utah State Football vs San Diego State: Preview, Depth Chart/Injuries, Predictions, How to Watch | Sports

LOGAN – Utah State is fresh off its most dynamic victory of the season but must now focus on getting more of the same against San Diego State. Much like Hawai’i, the Aztecs aren’t the same caliber of opponent the Aggies were getting pummeled by early in the season. But the Aggies have already stumbled against below-average opponents this season, such as Temple or New Mexico. Just because the opponent is lesser on paper is far from a guarantee that Utah State will find a way to have a lot of success. The hope, however, is that last week’s 55-10 domination of Hawai’i is an indication that improvements have been made and that more wins are on the horizon. Utah State rallies past SDSU behind Barnes’ record day, strong defense | Sports

LOGAN – At the 10:21 mark of the second quarter, Utah State quarterback Spencer Petras was hit as he threw the ball, which landed in the arms of San Diego State’s Brady Nassar for what was ruled an interception (arguably a fumble, but that’s what the referees ruled it as). The Aztecs went on to score a touchdown and take a 10-0 lead. When the Utah State offense went back onto the field, Petras didn’t join them, the hit that jarred the ball free from his hand also left him injured. Bryson Barnes went out there instead. His first drive went little better as the Aggies went four-and-out, coming up short on a fourth down conversion attempt on their own 29-yard line. San Diego State took the ball and wound up kicking a field goal to take a 13-0 lead, the largest lead the Aztecs have had over an FBS team this season. The mood in the stands around Merlin Olsen Field reflected the output of Utah State’s offense. SDSU had pummeled the Aggie offensive line, sacking Petras twice (not including the hit that resulted in the interception and not a strip-sack). The run game also hadn’t gotten going, with

Week 12 Mountain West Watch – Odom on the way out? Broncos a top 4 seed, Lobos get ranked win | Sports

A bit late, and a tad abbreviated, this week’s Mountain West Watch has a lot to cover in a short time. So let’s get into the swing of things with a look at the standings before jumping into a power ranking that saw a lot of movement in the middle and a new bottom team in the conference. Week 12 Mountain West Standings / CFP Poll Rankings Rk Team Record MW Record CFP Poll 1 Boise State 9-1 6-0 12th 2 Colorado State 7-3 5-0 – 3 UNLV 8-2 4-1 24th 4 Fresno State 5-5 3-3 – 5 San Jose State 6-4 3-3 – 6 New Mexico 5-6 3-3 – 7 San Diego State 3-7 2-3 – 8 Utah State 3-7 2-3 – 9 Hawai’i 4-7 2-4 – 10 Wyoming 2-8 2-4 – 11 Air Force 3-7 1-4 – 12 Nevada 3-8 0-5 – The one thing still relevant in these standings remains the fact that UNLV is still hanging behind Colorado State but with nothing the Rebels can do but hope and pray that Sin City will be able to watch a second straight title game with UNLV as a participant. There was a little pushing and shoving in
