4A State champ Ridgeline girls not yet done with basketball season – Cache Valley Daily

Ridgeline girls basketball. Photo by Robert K. Scott. MILLVILLE — Winning back-to-back state championships is often enough to put a satisfying close to a high school career and _ seniors on Ridgeline’s 4A Girls Basketball title-winning squad would be able to look back fondly on such a career. Their legacy, spanning four seasons, is an 89-12 record, three Region 11 titles, three straight appearances in the championship round and the aforementioned two straight gold-colored trophies. But these Riverhawks aren’t done yet. On March 28, Ridgeline will embark on its second out-of-state tournament of the year, and much like the last it’ll result in playing the toughest competition possible. The Riverhawks were invited to participate in “The Throne” tournament. It’s an eight-team field comprising some of the best high school basketball teams in the entire U.S. “We’re excited for the opportunity we get to take these girls out there,” Ridgeline head coach Ainsli Jenks said in an interview on the Full Court Press. “We’ve never been there, we just are excited to to be able to go play. I think it’s a fantastic way for these five seniors go out for their high school careers.” Five of the eight teams are

“This will never be done again:” A magical title run for Utah State – Cache Valley Daily

Let’s go over this one last time. In late April 2023, the Utah State basketball program was, as some put it, “in shambles.” A brand-new coach had just taken over but he had no roster. Last season’s stars, including a First Team All-Mountain West selection, the Sixth Man of the Year and an Honorable Mention All-MW player had all either graduated or transferred. Not only the stars, but other starters, backups, even the backup’s backups left the program. A whole 0.14 percent of USU’s points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks production from last year stayed with the program and only three players from the 15-man roster. You know, the stuff that’s been repeated game-in and game-out, with every new set of CBS Sports Network or FS1 broadcasters gushing over these facts and seemingly every national basketball podcast and radio show lining up interviews to ask about it. But there’s a reason that kept happening. And it’s because what Utah State did on Saturday — win the outright Mountain West regular season championship — wasn’t supposed to happen. It should never happen because sports has pretty much never worked this way. Even Danny Sprinkle, the head coach and leader of the

Murray, Jokic, Porter Jr. lead Nuggets to 142-121 rout of short-handed Utah Jazz – Cache Valley Daily

(AP Photo/David Zalubowski) DENVER (AP) — Michael Malone needn’t have worried about his superstar center and a potential letdown when the Denver Nuggets faced the short-handed Utah Jazz. Nikola Jokic played through a bruised right arm that kept him out of shootaround and Jamal Murray scored 37 points, helping the Nuggets bulldoze the Jazz 142-121 Saturday night. Jokic had 26 points, six rebounds and eight assists, and Michael Porter Jr. added 19 points for Denver, which inched within a half-game of Western Conferene leading Oklahoma City, which was idle Saturday night. The Nuggets, who were coming off a big win over Boston, led by as many as 39 points in the first half, which helped them withstand Utah’s third-quarter rally that cut the deficit to 14. The Jazz scored as many points in that third quarter as they did in the first half. Down 78-44 at the break, the Jazz outscored Denver 44-24. Keyonte George led Utah with 29 points and fueled the Jazz’s third-quarter surge that made it more respectable and

Guaranteed share of MW title on the line as USU takes on San Jose State – Cache Valley Daily

With events playing out as they did Tuesday, Utah State will be playing for the right to be at worst a co-Mountain West champion as it takes on San Jose State on the road Wednesday. Mind you, that co-champion title could be spread among as many as four teams depending on how results pan out later this week (and assuming an Aggie victory tonight for this thought experiment), but a trophy will be coming to Logan regardless should USU prevail over the Spartans in Provident Credit Union Event Center. It wouldn’t guarantee a one seed in the upcoming Mountain West Tournament, though, giving the Aggies plenty to fight for for the remainder of this week. Victory against SJSU came somewhat easily last time out as Utah State pulled off a 21-point triumph, 82-61 in the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum. The final score was lopsided, but the Aggies didn’t start the game off particularly well. The Spartans jumped out to a six-point lead in the first few minutes of the game, and held a lead as late as 7:33 left in the first half. At that point, the Aggies went on a 10-2 lead to take control of the contest. Early

Utah State prepping for senior night, season finale vs New Mexico with plenty on the line – Cache Valley Daily

LOGAN — Although Utah State can already call itself champions, there’s still plenty to be fighting for in its season finale and senior night in the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum. And with an opponent of New Mexico’s caliber, it seems almost destined to be a classic. When USU last took on the Lobos, back on Jan. 16, it was at the height of the Aggies’ national acclaim, ranking a season-best 16th in the AP Poll. They had an undefeated record in Mountain West play and were on a 15-game win streak that had produced a 16-1 overall record at the time. All of that was to be put on the line for what was, at the time, Utah State’s toughest challenge of the year: a road game at The Pit. Unfortunately for the Aggies, that challenge proved to be too much as they were cut down by a 13-point margin, 99-86. Those 99 points are not only the most allowed by Utah State this season, but the most since 2008.     This rematch has a lot more at stake than just an AP ranking or double-digit win streak. Utah State is aiming for an outright claim on the Mountain

‘Dynamic’ Mountain West hoops race could see 6 teams move on to March Madness – Cache Valley Daily

FILE – Utah State head coach Danny Sprinkle reacts to a call in overtime against Boise State an NCAA college basketball game, Saturday, Jan. 27, 2024, in Boise, Idaho. The No. 22 Aggies continued their unexpected run under first-year coach Sprinkle by clinching at least a share of the regular-season title by winning at San Jose State. (AP Photo/Steve Conner, File) SAN DIEGO (AP) — Brian Dutcher has experienced all 25 seasons of Mountain West basketball and he’s never seen one as crazy as this one. A season after Dutcher’s San Diego State Aztecs became the first Mountain West team to reach the Final Four, the conference could have a record six teams reach the NCAA Tournament. “Unbelievable,” Dutcher said of the race in the Mountain West, which stretches from San Diego’s beaches to the towering peaks of the Rocky Mountains and into the high desert of New Mexico, where the Lobos would love to rejoin March Madness after a decade away. “It’s dynamic. You’ve just got to enjoy every win you get.” For the longest time, several teams were within one game of the lead. The reigning regular-season and conference tournament champion Aztecs, ranked No. 21 in The Associated Press

(AP Photo/Rick Bowmer) SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — DeMar DeRozan scored 29 points, including the go-ahead basket with a minute left, to lead the Chicago Bulls to a 119-117 victory over the Utah Jazz on Wednesday night. Coby White scored 25 points, including seven 3-pointers, and had six assists for the Bulls, who survived a late comeback to beat Utah for the fourth straight time. Nikola Vucevic had 23 points and 12 rebounds. “We just got to stay the course, do what we need to do, pull out the victory and carry on,” DeRozan said. “Every single game is going to be tough.” John Collins led Utah with 25 points and 14 rebounds. Collin Sexton had 24 points and seven assists. Brice Sensabaugh added a career-high 15 points and a career-high 12 rebounds in his first NBA start. Utah trailed almost the entire time for the first three quarters, but Chicago never led by more than 12 points during that stretch and left room for

Utah State clinches share of MW title with 3-point barrage win over San Jose State – Cache Valley Daily

Utah State guard Josh Uduje (14) shoots a three-pointer over San Jose State guard Latrell Davis (6) during the second half of an NCAA basketball game Wednesday, March 6, 2024, in San Jose, Calif. (AP Photo/Nic Coury) Utah State head coach Danny Sprinkle frequently went to bat for his team’s 3-point shooting early in the season, even while the Aggies were establishing themselves as one of the least efficient shooting teams in the country. Sprinkle insisted they could hit 15 threes in a game, but prior to Wednesday’s road contest at San Jose State ranked 271st in the country in 3-point percentage and an average of six made threes per game, topping out at 11 in a single game. Two hours spent in the Provident Credit Union Event Center later, Utah State had not only reached that 15 triples mark, but surpassed it with a season-high of 16. “I’ve been telling people, like I’ve seen this team shooting the basketball like this in practice. I’m shocked that we haven’t shot it better in games,” Sprinkle said. “Hopefully, our confidence will build on this game. Because when we are making threes, like any team, we’re pretty dang good.” This “pretty dang
