LOGAN — Utah State nearly let a 17-point first-half lead, and yet another chance to take a crucial lead in the Mountain West standings, go to waste Saturday evening against Grand Canyon. The Aggies pulled it off in the end by a score of 74-69 but certainly made it much more interesting than many would have expected based on how the first 20 minutes of the game went. During that first half, Utah State appeared to be unstoppable on offense and back to their early-season form on defense. GCU put a lot of effort into stopping USU’s primary scorers, MJ Collins and Mason Falslev, and that laid more responsibity on the shoulders of the team’s secondary scorers. Drake Allen and Karson Templin answered that call by each hitting a pair of 3-pointers in the opening minutes and combined for 22 first-half points — 14 from Allen on pefrect 6-for-6 shooting and eight from Templin. For only the second time this season, Utah State is on a losing streak with back-to-back losses on the road to Nevada and San Diego State. The Aggies will look to end the skid against a Grand Canyon team they lost to earlier in the season (and was part of the only other losing streak of the year). It’ll be a battle of two teams that are fiercly proud of their home courts and student sections. For the second game in a row, Utah State had a chance to take a commanding lead in the race for the Mountain West title. But, also for a second consecutive game, the Aggies blew that chance, this time with a 89-72 defeat at San Diego State. It’s the most points given up by the Aggies this year and second-most allowed by USU in the Jerrod Calhoun era (highest was 93 at Colorado State in 2024-25). Utah State entered the game with a one-game lead over San Diego State in the conference standings, but with the loss the two teams are now tied for first place with New Mexico one back back in third. But the Aztecs had far more to gain in this game than the Aggies had to lose. SDSU was on a two-game losing streak with its at-large NCAA hopes all but dashed by those losses. A win over Utah State would revitalize that and the Aztecs were fully aware of that. “They were just hungrier than us. After taking just its fourth loss of the season, Utah State is heading on the road again for a rematch of its biggest conference of the season. The Aggies defeated San Diego State 71-66 at home, rallying in the second half to down the Aztecs and overtake them for first place in the Mountain West standings. Utah State has remained in first place since that game with SDSU sitting in second. But now the first-place belt is on the line once again. A win for the Aggies would mean almost effectively eliminating the Aztecs from the title race while a loss would mean a tie atop the table with a week and a half left in the regular season. With just over seven minutes to play in Reno, Utah State led by eight points with a chance to take a two-game lead in the Mountain West standings. But in the final stretch, the normally clutch Aggies faltered and lost 80-77 to Nevada. Heroic offensive performances from the first half-hour of game time gradually disappeared as crunch time rolled around. Drake Allen, soon to become a father, made a career-best five 3-pointers (and was a perfect 5-for-5 to start the game from distance). Kolby King had 16 points with four made triples of his own. MJ Collins hit a trio of 3-pointers. But those three players missed their final 13 shots collectively, Collins going 0 for his last 6, Allen 0 for his last 5 and King missing his final two shots. The Aggies as a team made 13 threes in the first 23 minutes of the game — most of those by King, Collins and Allen. Those led to Utah State leading for more than 30 minutes of the game and up until the final two minutes. However, those threes dried up as they made only two in the final 17 minutes of regulation. LOGAN — Utah State completely shut down one of the hottest offenses in the country in a 75-56 win over Boise State on Wednesday. The win completed an Aggie sweep of the Broncos with USU winning the two games by a combined 44 points. The Aggies didn’t quite have the lava-hot scoring it did in putting up 93 against the Broncos back in January, which helped an extra-staunch defensive effort took center stage this time around. Boise State brought one of the hottest offenses in the conference to the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum. Over the previous eight games, the Broncos had shot a hair under 50% from the field and 39% from three. That enabled a scoring rate of 84.9 points per game (granted there were a couple overtime games in that span). But against the Aggies, Boise State were shooting as if they were playing outside in the piles of snow building up around the arena. The Broncos shot just 37% from the field, their second-lowest mark in conference play. The 56 points set a new season low. Utah State head coach Jerrod Calhoun noted multiple times that his team’s dominance on that end came from paying attention to the details.
