Horton-Tucker’s career-high 41 lead Jazz past Spurs 128-117 – Cache Valley Daily

(AP Photo/Eric Gay) SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Talen Horton-Tucker scored a career-high 41 points and the Utah Jazz defeated the Spurs 128-117 on Wednesday night in what could have been coach Gregg Popovich’s final home game in San Antonio. Utah snapped a four-game skid to keep its fading playoff hopes alive in its first season under Will Hardy, who served five seasons under Popovich as an assistant coach. “I’m probably not the right person to ask and, at this point, I’m not sure he’s the right person to ask either,” Hardy said about Popovich’s possible retirement. Popovich has given no indication that he is retiring or even that he will return for his 28th season. The annual speculation has intensified, though, especially since the 74-year-old coach allowed his expected induction this summer into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame after years of refusing to even be nominated. The Spurs have two home games remaining, but those will be played 73 miles away in Austin’s new Moody Center. “It’s something that is real,

Texas Tech won 97-62. (AP Photo/Denis Poroy) LOGAN — With Ryan Odom now gone from Logan, Utah State must undergo the head coaching search for a fourth time since 2015. The incoming coach will be the fifth coach for the Aggies since the start of the 2014-15 season. Who exactly the next head coach is is something few will know for quite a while. One of those few will be USU’s interim athletic director, Jerry Bovee, who will undergo the biggest test of his short tenure in trying to find someone that will continue the success that Odom, and his predecessor Craig Smith, brought to Utah State. Potential candidates could be guessed in a few different ways. One is to find potential coaches that have some connection to Utah. Craig Smith became familiar with Utah State during his time as an assistant at Colorado State. Ryan Odom had a brother in the scouting department for the Utah Jazz. The connections were small, but present and likely played a

USU MBB coach Ryan Odom leaving for VCU – Cache Valley Daily

LOGAN — According to reports, Utah State head basketball coach Ryan Odom will leave the school to take the head coaching position at VCU, ending his two-year tenure in Logan. Dick Weiss of the New York Daily News, first reported that Odom has left USU and is heading back east to take over the job left by Mike Rhoades who left the Rams to take the Penn State job. Ryan Odom leaves Utah State, resurfaces on East Coast as head coach at VCU. Great get for Rams. Welcome back coach huge fan of your dad. — Dick Weiss (@HoopsWeiss) March 29, 2023 Last week Jeff Goodman, a basketball analyst for Stadium, reported that Odom was “arguably the frontrunner” to become the next head coach, not at VCU, but South Florida. However, it seems Odom is looking for a better basketball situation. The Bulls have a 45-77 record over the last four seasons and haven’t made the NCAA Tournament (despite being in a multi-bid AAC) since 2011. The Rams meanwhile have been tournament mainstays out of the A-10, getting an invite to the big dance 10 times in the last 12 seasons (excluding the 2019-20 season when the tournament was cancelled).

(AP Photo/Rick Bowmer) SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Devin Booker scored 24 points and Phoenix reserves sparked the decisive run for the Suns in a 117-103 win over the fading Utah Jazz on Monday night. “Our bench came in and changed the dynamic of the game from a physicality standpoint, getting stops. That allowed us to get out in transition,” Phoenix coach Monty Williams said. Deandre Ayton had 14 points after missing four games with a bruised hip. But a trio off the bench was pivotal for Phoenix: Terrence Ross had 13 points, Cameron Payne added 12 and Bismack Biyombo scored 11. They helped the Suns to a 57-25 advantage in bench points. “The bench is starting to come together. We are getting a better rhythm and groove, and when we come into the game we’re bringing a different level of energy,” Ross said. The Suns (40-35) had lost four in a row on the road. But with this victory they sit more securely in

SANDY, Utah (AP) — João Klauss scored a pair of goals and Saint. Louis City extended its winning streak to five straight matches to start the season with a 4-0 victory over Real Salt Lake on Saturday night. Only two other MLS teams claimed 15 points in their first five games, the Galaxy in 1996 and Sporting Kansas City in 2012. St. Louis had already set the record for the best start for an expansion team when it won its fourth last weekend, surpassing the Seattle Sounders in 2009. Salt Lake (1-3-0) won its season opener against Vancouver, but then dropped consecutive games against Seattle and Austin. Nicholas Gioacchini, who St. Louis acquired in the expansion draft from Orlando, scored just two minutes into the second half off Eduard Lowen’s corner kick. The top USU football returners that can break out in 2023 – Cache Valley Daily

LOGAN – In a developmental program like Utah State, it’s typical for players whose names fans have only seen on the roster to come out of the blue and become the best players on the team. It’s the nature of a team like the Aggies. A lot of work is done behind the scenes with players who come in and spend a year or two out of sight and mind of the fans. But when the players emerge as redshirt sophomores or juniors, they’ve bulked up, worked on the finer aspects of their game, and are much more capable than as fresh high school recruits. The following are players who have spent at least a year on Utah State’s roster and are likely to make the jump from relative unknown to potentially starting and maybe even becoming one of the better players on the team. Ike Larsen | Sophomore | Safety Is it possible for Larsen to have a “breakout” season if he was an honorable mention freshman All-American and Second Team All-Mountain West? Well, kind of. Looking at Larsen’s season totals last year shows how much his impact came in bursts. Through the first eight games of the season,
