LOGAN, Utah – The Mountain West announced its all-academic teams Tuesday for its winter and spring sports and Utah State had a conference-best 155 student-athletes recognized.
Of its 155 academic all-MW selections, Utah State had 52 student-athletes from women’s track & field honored, along with 40 from men’s track & field, 15 from softball, 12 from gymnastics, 10 from women’s basketball, eight from women’s tennis, seven from men’s basketball, six from men’s golf and five from men’s tennis.
Four programs – men’s basketball, men’s track & field, women’s track & field and women’s tennis – had the most honorees within its sport in the MW, while softball and golf tied for the most honorees. Furthermore, gymnastics ranked second in the league, while women’s basketball and men’s tennis both tied for the third-most selections.
Utah State led the MW with 155 all-academic honorees, followed by New Mexico (144), Fresno State (128), Colorado State (125), Wyoming (118), San José State (107), Boise State (101), Nevada (99), UNLV (95), Air Force (86) and San Diego State (82).
Thirteen of Utah State’s 155 student-athletes from its winter/spring sports to earn academic all-MW honors carried a 4.00 grade point average, including seven from women’s track & field in graduate Bailey Brinkerhoff-Todd (educational specialist in psychology), junior Hannah Lybbert (economics), junior Emma Thornley (kinesiology), sophomore Alison Richter (kinesiology), and freshmen Courtney Madsen (undeclared), Breanna Raven (communication studies) and Julia Stuard (registered nurse). Men’s track & field had four student-athletes with a 4.00 GPA in graduate Mark Crandall (master of kinesiology), sophomores Carson Coleman (electrical engineering) and Logan Garnica (human development and family studies), and freshman Joshua Armstrong (kinesiology). Gymnastics and softball had one student-athlete each with a 4.00 GPA in senior Juliette Boyer (law and constitutional studies) and senior Ali Ashner (master of sports management), respectively.
To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least one academic term at the member institution while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and be a starter or significant contributor on their athletic team.
