Utah State loses overtime heartbreaker at UNLV | Sports

Utah State came agonizingly close to clinching bowl eligibility in year one of the Bronco Mendenhall era, losing to UNLV 29-26 in double-overtime at Allegiant Stadium on Saturday evening. Twice, the Aggies lined up for walk-off field goals, one from 44 yards and the other from 41 yards away. Placekicker Tanner Rinker, who entered the evening a perfect 10-for-10 on field goal attempts this year, missed both of them. The first of those kicks came with two seconds left in regulation and the game tied 23-apiece. Bryson Barnes had marched the Aggies 49 yards to get into field goal range, including a 21-yard scramble. Once the offense got well within Rinker’s range, they ran the ball up the gut to burn the rest of the time off the clock. But the kick left hash, went wide right off the foot of Rinker. That left the game for overtime, and it was there that the Aggies got a gift from UNLV’s kicker, who missed from 39 yards out after the Utah State defense held the Rebels to a three-and-out. As is typical when your opponent has an empty possession to start overtime, the Aggies went conservative, playing for the makeable middle-distance

Livingston, Clark, lift Aggie men’s and women’s basketball to wins in Spectrum double-header | Sports

LOGAN — The A on Old Main Hill will be a little extra blue tonight as an Aggie basketball double-header featuring both women’s and men’s hoops teams produced a pair of wins for Utah State. The women started things off with a 77-69 victory over Omaha in the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum, immediately followed by a 75-51 win by the men’s team over UTEP (not to mention the volleyball team getting a 3-1 win on the road at San Jose State). The lady Aggies’ contest tipped off at 11 a.m., but the team didn’t really find its groove until the literal afternoon as the visiting Omaha Mavericks jumped out to a 16-8 lead in the first quarter. Omaha, which was on the tail end of a three-game road trip through Utah, facing Utah Tech and BYU earlier this week, brought its best offensive effort of the week. Mavericks lead guard Sarai Estupinan took the lion’s share of scoring attempts for her side. She finished the day 8 of 20 (out of 54 team field goal attempts) for 26 points to lead all scorers. Fellow guard Cora Olsen also lit up the scoreboard with 16, making for a difficult pair to

Aggies fall to BYU in penalties in NCAA First Round | Sports

PROVO, Utah — Utah State soccer (10-6-7, 5-2-3 MW) saw its season come to a heartbreaking close Friday night at South Field in Provo, playing 5-seed BYU to a 1-1 draw through 110 minutes, but falling 7-6 in an 11-round penalty kick shootout.  The hosts took an early lead when in the 19th minute, BYU’s Mia Goettsche gained control off the deflection of an Aggie defender, then found the top corner of the net with a high-arching shot from the opposite side.  The Aggies evened things up in the 53rd minute when a ball near the corner was saved just inches from the endline by senior forward Tess Werts, who delivered a perfect ball to the far post to the head of sophomore forward Mia Mullenmeister. Mullenmeister slipped a header into the net just inside the post for an equalizer, evening the match at 1-1.  The sides remained flush through the remainder of the 90-minute regulation period, so for the third-straight game, Utah State went into overtime.  The penalty kick shootout began with a save by USU graduate goalkeeper Taylor Rath, who came up big throughout the penalty round, making multiple big stops. The Aggies made their first two shots, but

Volleyball moves to 16-0 in MW with 3-1 win at San José State | Sports

LOGAN, Utah – Utah State volleyball remained perfect in Mountain West play, moving to 16-0 with a 3-1 (32-30, 25-16, 28-30, 25-17) win over San José State on Saturday afternoon at Spartan Gym.    The Aggies also extended their overall winning streak to 17 matches, the program’s longest winning streak since 1979 and the fourth-longest streak in program history overall, trailing only a streak of 18 games in 1977, a 23-game streak spanning the team’s 1978 national title season and 1979, and a program-record 26-game streak in 1978.   Set One After USU opened the match with a kill by sophomore opposite side hitter Loryn Helgesen, the Spartans took control of the opening set with an 8-0 run. The Aggies responded with three-straight points off kills from Helgesen, sophomore outside hitter Andrea Simovski and senior middle blocker Tierney Barlow but were unable to cut the lead below three points for much of the set. A pair of Helgesen kills began a 4-1 spurt by the Aggies to claw back within 22-20 before back-to-back Spartan kills put SJSU at set point with a 24-20 lead. Utah State then fought off four-straight set points to extend the frame. Barlow recorded two kills while

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Matthew Schaefer scored on a slap shot 2:08 into overtime to become the youngest player to score an overtime goal in a regular-season NHL game and the New York Islanders beat the Utah Mammoth 3-2 on Friday night for their third straight extra-time victory. Jonathon Drouin and Emil Heineman also scored for the Islanders (10-6-2) in their fourth straight win, and Tony DeAngelo had two assists. David Rittich stopped 27 shots — including all 16 after the first period. Schaefer, the defenseman selected No. 1 overall in this year’s NHL draft, has 15 points — most among NHL rookies. Dylan Guenther and JJ Peterka scored for the Mammoth in the Utah franchise’s 100th game. Karel Vejmelka had 18 saves. The Mammoth are the best in the NHL in limiting shots on goal and they outshot the Islanders 29-21 as they dropped to 5-1-1 at home. New York tied it 2-2 with 6:16 remaining when the puck went off Jonathon Drouin’s skate and was touched by Utah

Utah State basketball vs UTEP full preview: How to watch, team breakdowns, projected starters, injuries | Sports

The fourth game of the season presents Utah State with a chance to rebound against what ended up feeling like a disappointingly close victory on Wednesday. The Aggies take on UTEP just a few days after beating Weber State 83-73, which featured a press conference in which head coach Jerrod Calhoun got after his team for being entitled and distracted by social media. They will have to do it short-handed, though, with one starter having to sit this one out and a true freshman likely to make his first career start.
