SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Dylan Guenther scored with 1 second left in overtime, and Utah beat the Philadelphia Flyers 3-2 on Tuesday night. Guenther had two goals and an assist in his return to Utah’s lineup after missing 12 games with an injury. He tied it at 2 with his 17th goal 8:40 into the third period. Mikhail Sergachev had one goal and two assists for Utah, which had dropped five in a row. Karel Vejmelka made 18 saves. The Flyers were shut out in their previous three games. They have been outscored 13-2 during a four-game slide. Sergachev tied it at 1 when he scored his 10th goal 3:32 into the second. But Tyson Foerster regained the lead for the Flyers with his 14th at 4:29. Rodrigo Abols scored his first goal of the season for Philadelphia in the first period. Samuel Ersson stopped 39 shots. Aggies secure bounce-back road win against relentless Cowboys | Sports

More cold shooting, a high altitude road venue and a relentless opponent made it a tough night for Utah State in its road game against Wyoming on Tuesday evening. Despite all those challenges, the Aggies pulled off the win 71-67, an almost identical score to USU’s win in Logan exactly two months ago. “We found a way to get to the free throw line and win ugly on the road, which is really hard to do. So give our guys a lot of credit,” USU head coach Jerrod Calhoun said. Winning ugly just seems to be a theme for Utah State in many of these conference games. The Aggies have now claimed six of their 10 conference wins by margins of six points or less. How this game got to be so ugly was due mostly to the fact that Utah State simply had another really poor shooting night. Right after going 5 of 31 from three against New Mexico, the Aggies actually shot a worse percentage by going 3 for 19 (16.1 percent to 15.8 percent) against Wyoming. It’s a wild swing from a seemingly distant five-game stretch preceding these last two outings where the Aggies were shooting in

Former Utah State men’s basketball great Jon Wickizer passes away | Sports

LOGAN, Utah — Former Utah State men’s basketball player Jon Wickizer passed away unexpectedly on January 29 at the age of 51. Wickizer, originally from Woods Cross, Utah, was a four-year letterwinner at Utah State from 1993-96. After a decorated prep career at Woods Cross High School, Wickizer made an immediate impact for the Aggies as he earned Big West Conference all-freshman team honors his first season in Logan. He then became a part-time starter as a sophomore and a full-time starter as a junior, helping lead the Aggies to a 21-8 record and an NIT appearance in 1994-95. As a senior in 1995-96, Wickizer was one of just three Aggies to start all 33 games as he played 31.7 minutes per contest. He averaged 8.3 points and 4.1 rebounds per game, while ranking as one of the team’s most efficient 3-point shooters as he shot 39.4 percent on the year.  During his career, Wickizer totaled 690 points and 380 rebounds for the Aggies while playing in 111 games and making 73 starts.  A GoFundMe page has been created to help assist the family during this difficult time: https://tinyurl.com/59j3xefd Source link

Siakam’s late surge leads Indiana to 112-111 comeback win over Utah | Sports

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Pascal Siakam scored 10 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter to help the Indiana Pacers beat the Utah Jazz 112-111 on Monday night for their fourth straight win. Tyrese Haliburton scored 18 for the Pacers, who played without Myles Turner after the center was a late scratch due to an ankle injury. Obi Toppin and Aaron Nesmith each had 13 points. John Collins and Jordan Clarkson both scored 21 for the Jazz (11-37), who have dropped nine of 10. Utah guard Collin Sexton sprained his left ankle in the opening minutes and did not return. Isaiah Collier and Keyonte George combined for 27 points and 21 assists but made errors down the stretch that showed their inexperience. The Jazz led 101-89 on Collier’s 3-pointer with 6:52 to play, but were outscored 23-10 down the stretch as the Pacers turned up the pressure. Takeaways Pacers: Indiana had scored at least 130 points three games in a row but the Pacers’ long-range shooting deserted them (23.8% from 3). So they made their comeback by going inside and getting out in transition. Jazz: Late-game mistakes cost Utah again. After Collins gave Utah its last lead at
