The annual Las Vegas Summer League begins competition today and three former Utah State men’s basketball players, Darius Brown, Neemias Queta and Taylor Funk, are on rosters among all 30 clubs participating in the exhibition tournament. Brown is signed with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Queta with the Boston Celtics and Funk is on the Washington Wizards.
For Funk and Queta, this will be a return to the summer league, though neither have played summer games with their current respective teams. Queta played in three summer leagues with the Sacrament Kings, playing 17 total games and averaging 9.1 points, 6.2 rebounds 1.5 blocks and 1.3 assists in 21.7 minutes per game. His fourth appearance in the summer festivities, now with Boston, comes after he signed a multi-year contract with Boston, an upgrade over the two-way deals Queta had been signed on every year since being drafted in 2021.
Funk spent last summer with the Miami Heat, appearing in just four games and scoring a total of six points on 26.3 percent shooting. Prior to the NBA regular season the Heat waived Funk who then signed with Washington. Funk then played the entire year on the franchise’s G-League affiliate, the Capital City Go-Go. He started 25 of 34 appearances with the Go-Go, averaging 9.4 points, 3.1 rebounds and 1.9 assists.
Brown recently signed an Exhibit-10 contract with the Cavaliers, the same franchise that another former Aggie star, Sam Merrill, currently plays for. The Las Vegas Summer League will be Brown’s first professional basketball appearance following his five-year collegiate career.
Each team will play in at least five games, with four preliminary games setting up to a single elimination playoff. None of the former Aggies are currently schedule to face each other, though playoff pairings could create that scenario.
