LOGAN — The embattled Utah State women’s basketball program will turn its future over to Ohio State assistant coach Wesley Brooks as the Aggies look to bounce back from a turbulent five-year stretch. “Wesley is a great developer of people, not only as high-preforming student-athletes, All-Americans and professionals, but as young women in society,” USU Athletic Director Diana Sabau said in a statement. “Under his leadership, we look forward to advancing the trajectory of women’s basketball at Utah State University.” Brooks holds two decades of coaching experience, starting out as a manager under then-head coach John Beilein at West Virginia and later becoming a graduate assistant and eventually director of basketball operations with the Mountaineers. For the 2007-08 season, he took on an assistant coaching role at Robert Morris, moving on shortly after to have stints at, Texas Southern (2008-11), North Texas (2011-15), Utah (2015-17), Michigan (2017-21) and most recently Ohio State (2021-24). “I am thankful and honored that Diana and President (Elizabeth) Cantwell have given me the opportunity to lead the Utah State women’s basketball program,” said Brooks in the Aggies’ press release. “I am excited and look forward to establishing a program that Aggie nation can be proud
HYRUM – Mountain Crest High School here is preparing to host a Regional Water Polo Tournament on Friday, April 19 and Saturday, April 20. The two-day aquatic event, sponsored by the Cache Valley Visitors Bureau, is expected to draw high school water polo teams from throughout northern Utah. Water polo is a competitive team sport played in pools between two teams of seven players each. The game consists of four quarters in which the teams attempt to score goals by throwing the ball into the opposing team’s goal. From its beginnings as an adaptation of rugby played in lakes and rivers, water polo has now evolved into one of the toughest competitive sports in the world. Each team’s six field players must play offense and defense, swimming continuously, often multiple lengths of the pool. Water polo is a game of both stamina and strategy. Players can burn up to 700 calories an hour, while swimming about the pool, treading water, passing and shooting the ball. Spectators are being invited to witness the all-day tournament play on April 19 and 20, which is expected to showcase the immense talent of local athletes. In addition to the high-intensity games, the regional tournament
LOGAN — Utah State got the unique opportunity to introduce two head coaches in one press conference, allowing fans to meet with new women’s basketball head coach Wes Brooks and men’s basketball head coach Jerrod Calhoun in the Wayne Estes Center Tuesday morning. The two coaches are taking over programs that are at very different stages. The men’s side just won an NCAA Tournament game and is on a six-year run that’s included five qualifications to the Big Dance, two regular season titles and a pair of conference tournament titles. The women’s team is on a five-year run where the average yearly win total is in the single digits (and the highest single-season win total in that span is 11). Brooks and Calhoun are very aware of those facts and their respective comments reflected as much. Calhoun said it pretty bluntly that “this is not a rebuild, this is a reload.” He even went above and beyond with his goals for the program, bypassing talk of repeating as Mountain West champions and going all the way to the top. “I told (the players) if they come back, they run it back, we can win a national championship. I truly believe
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Ryan Conwell matched his career high with 27 points and Robbie Avila had 26 points and 10 rebounds to help top-seeded Indiana State take advantage of a heavily partisan home-state crowd to beat second-seeded Utah 100-90 on Tuesday night and advance to the NIT championship game. Isaiah Swope added 15 points — all in the second half — and eight assists for Indiana State (32-6), which reached its first national tourney title game since Larry Bird took the unbeaten Sycamores to the 1979 NCAA title game against Magic Johnson and Michigan State. A win Thursday in Indianapolis against top-seeded Seton Hall (24-12) would allow the Sycamores to tie the 1978-79 team’s single-season school record for victories. Deivon Smith had a career high 28 points, seven rebounds and six assists to lead the Utes (22-15), the last Pac-12 men’s team still playing in the league’s farewell season. Branden Carlson scored 17. Utah made 17 3-pointers, with Smith going 6 of 6. It certainly wasn’t easy for Indiana State to take control. But once it did, turning a 10-2 run midway through the second half into a 63-56 lead, the Sycamores never trailed again and extended the margin to
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Caris LeVert scored 26 points and Jarrett Allen had 21 points and 12 rebounds, helping the Cleveland Cavaliers beat the Utah Jazz 129-113 on Tuesday night. LeVert started in place of Donovan Mitchell, who missed Tuesday’s game due to injury management. Evan Mobley added 21 points for the Cavs, and reserve Sam Merrill had 18 points on six 3-pointers. Cleveland had 38 assists on 46 baskets and shot 54% from the field. “We try to take the play that’s there and we have enough talent on this team that if we just make the simple play, defenses are going to have to make tough choices,” coach J.B. Bickerstaff said. The Cavaliers also scored 26 points off 20 Jazz turnovers while leading wire to wire. They stopped a four-game road losing streak. “This was one of those nights where it felt like we played our type of basketball,” Allen said. “The ball was moving. We were talking on defense.” Brice Sensabaugh made six 3-pointers and scored 22 points for Utah, matching his season high in his rookie year. “I think it was just a matter of time before I started getting my rhythm,” Sensabaugh said. “I
Utah State basketball fans got a double gut-punch of news in the early afternoon as the two leading scorers from last years NCAA Tournament team, Great Osobor and Ian Martinez, entered the transfer portal with reports coming within minutes of each other.
