HYRUM – Mountain Crest High School here is preparing to host a Regional Water Polo Tournament on Friday, April 19 and Saturday, April 20.
The two-day aquatic event, sponsored by the Cache Valley Visitors Bureau, is expected to draw high school water polo teams from throughout northern Utah.
Water polo is a competitive team sport played in pools between two teams of seven players each. The game consists of four quarters in which the teams attempt to score goals by throwing the ball into the opposing team’s goal.
From its beginnings as an adaptation of rugby played in lakes and rivers, water polo has now evolved into one of the toughest competitive sports in the world.
Each team’s six field players must play offense and defense, swimming continuously, often multiple lengths of the pool.
Water polo is a game of both stamina and strategy. Players can burn up to 700 calories an hour, while swimming about the pool, treading water, passing and shooting the ball.
Spectators are being invited to witness the all-day tournament play on April 19 and 20, which is expected to showcase the immense talent of local athletes.
In addition to the high-intensity games, the regional tournament will also feature a variety of food trucks for attendees to enjoy diverse culinary delights while cheering for their favorite teams.
The CVVB’s sponsorship of this event demonstrates its commitment to promoting sports and community engagement in northern Utah, according to a tournament press release.
