Region play opens this week with several local teams moving up in latest RPI rankings – Cache Valley Daily

Photo by Robert K. Scott MILLVILLE – The latest RPI rankings of boys and girls basketball by the Utah High School Activities Association (UHSAA) reflect more movement among the Region 11 boys teams than the girls teams. Four of the six boys teams are ranked differently Monday than they were a week ago. For the girls, only two teams have different rankings as Region 11 play begins this week. For the boys, Sky View (8-3) remains the highest rated Region 11 team at #3 but Ridgeline (8-4) is moving up the rankings. The Riverhawks climbed two spots to #4, while Green Canyon (6-6) fell two spots to #7. Bear River (4-7) moved up one spot to #10 while Logan (4-8) dropped two spots to #11. Mountain Crest (1-10) remains at #13. For the girls, Ridgeline (12-1) is no longer the lone undefeated team in the state. The Riverhawks lost to Sugar-Salem 46-41 on Saturday but the loss did not move them off the top spot in 4A. Green Canyon (6-4) fell one spot to #3 while Sky View (8-5) and Mountain Crest (7-5) remain at #4 and #7, respectively. Just as the Bear River boys moved up one spot, so

Trojans’ barrage of 3-pointers downs Mustangs – Cache Valley Daily

MORGAN – Morgan’s Alex Fisher was hot from the start and he outscored Mountain Crest 23-20 at half, including swishing a half court buzzer beater. The guard was 6-8 from deep in the first half and started the first quarter with 17 points, finishing with a game high 28. The Trojans were 9-1 coming into the game and had made 54 shots from deep, but buried 13 against Mountain Crest, leading from wire to wire for the 72-40 win. For the third straight game the Mustangs got off to a slow start, finding themselves down 28-7 after the first quarter. Mountain Crest turned the ball over six times in the first and struggled to get their offense going. Preston Lofthouse was in double figures for the eighth time in 10 games and finished with team high 10. Oliver Nethercott had eight points and for the second straight game Karsen Falslev was held scoreless, the Mustangs’ third leading scorer. No other Trojan was in double figures but Fisher led the way. Season leading scorer Nixon Ordyna had seven in the first quarter, but finished with only nine as Miles Croshaw did a good job shutting him down after his hot start.

Career night for Lofthouse not enough for Mountain Crest – Cache Valley Daily

Preston Lofthouse. Photo by Tina Lerohl HYRUM – Mountain Crest found themselves facing a double digit deficit, down 16-6 to Wasatch after the first quarter, and couldn’t claw back despite Preston Lofthouse scoring a career high 31 points. Lofthouse scored all 12 fourth quarter points for the Mustangs but the Wasps had three players in double digits and had a response for every run on the way to a 62-49 win (watch the replay here). The Mustangs had just as many turnovers as points (six) in the first quarter and had to try and come back from another early double digit lead. Mountain Crest could not mount a sustained run, cutting the lead to five or six before turning it over and going back down double digits. This was despite Mountain Crest winning the turnover battle, 15-17, and making double digit free throws for the first time all season, going 13-19. Oliver Nethercott added 12 points as well, but only four players scored for the Mustangs. Against the Mustangs’ man-to-man defense Mitch Lind scored all 13 of his points in the first half for Wasatch. Mountain Crest switched to a 3-2 zone, and stuck in that defense for most of

Ridgeline girls and Sky View boys rank highest in latest UHSAA RPI rankings – Cache Valley Daily

Photo by Clint Allen. MILLVILLE – With not many teams playing during the holiday break the latest RPI rankings from the Utah High School Activities Association didn’t move very much since the inaugural rankings of the season on Dec. 23, 2021, especially among Region 11’s top teams. However, there were a few teams that did move up and down in the latest ratings as of Monday, January 3, 2022. For girls basketball, Ridgeline (12-0) and Green Canyon (6-3) remain the #1 and #2 teams in 4A, respectively. The Sky View Bobcats (7-5) moved up one spot to #4 to place three Region 11 teams within the top 5. For boys basketball, Sky View (7-3) remained at #3 while both Green Canyon (6-4) and Ridgeline (6-4) moved up one spot each, ranked #5 and #6 respectively. Among all Region 11 teams for both girls and boys basketball the Logan Grizzlies boys basketball team (4-6) fell the most in rankings, dropping from #5 to #9. In 5A, the Box Elder girls basketball team (7-4) is ranked #8, even after a 60-33 loss to Ridgeline. The Bees boys team (5-4), meanwhile, is ranked #16 in 5A. For Rich, the boys (3-3) are ranked

Mountain Crest falls short against Preston – Cache Valley Daily

PRESTON – Mountain Crest went on a 16-5 run to cut Preston’s lead to four with seven minutes to go, but could not get it within a possession. The Mustangs had several opportunities, but could not find the clutch bucket to tie up the game. With six minutes left Preston pushed the lead to six and then stole the inbound and was fouled to push it back to eight and hit free throws to ice the game 57-49. Preston won without their top player, Brecker Knapp (17.7 ppg), who twisted his ankle early in the first and sat the rest of the game. Preston led the whole way, aided by a 19-7 first quarter. The Mustangs had a chance to cut the lead to six before half, but Hunter Pugmire missed two free throws and a three after a rebound before Drew Jones banked in an off balance three to go up 11 at half. The Mustangs couldn’t find the big buckets to get the game tied. Coming into the game the Indians got 50 of their 57 points per game from their starting lineup and, without Knapp, seven Indians scored. Jones was the leading scorer with 15, including 7-8

Lid on the basket for Mountain Crest offense in 40-28 loss to Hunter – Cache Valley Daily

HYRUM – Down by 15 heading into the fourth quarter, Mountain Crest went on a 11-4 run over the next six minutes. However, the Mustangs couldn’t get any closer than seven, finding their offense much too late after scoring just 14 points combined in the first three quarters. Hunter closed the game on a 7-3 run to win 40-28. In the first half Mountain Crest couldn’t protect the ball, giving it away 12 times, and this stalled the Mustang offense to the tune of just nine points in 16 minutes of game time. The first three quarters Mountain Crest scored in single digits and didn’t have a scorer finish in double digits. Preston Lofthouse was the closest with nine points. Only five players scored for Mountain Crest. Hunter only had 22 points at the half, but did so without their leading scorer Darius Henderson (15.5 points per game) who picked up foul number three with just under 90 seconds left in the first quarter. This was 40 seconds after he was whistled for his second, but the Mountain Crest offense couldn’t mount a run with Henderson on the bench for the rest of the first half. Joseph Doporto scored 11
