Late turnovers cost Mountain Crest in 55-41 loss to Box Elder – Cache Valley Daily

HYRUM – Neither Mountain Crest, nor Box Elder, led by more than four points for the first 34 minutes of the game. Tied at 36 heading into the final period the Mustangs could not protect the ball. The Bees forced three turnovers to build and eight point lead over the first four minutes of the fourth quarter, and led by no less than seven the rest of the way. Mountain Crest fell to 0-4 with a 55-41 loss. Preston Lofthouse was the only double-digit scorer for Mountain Crest at 13.3 points per game coming in, but played just a few minutes in the first half after picking up three fouls. Lofthouse didn’t start the third, but played more in the fourth before fouling out and finished with only four points. Oliver Nethercott stepped up, scoring a career high 18 points but was scoreless in the fourth quarter. Nethercott’s performance was only the fifth double digit scoring performance in four games for the Mustangs. Karson Falslev added eight points. Cole Mortensen was the second leading scorer for Box Elder at 11.5 points per game, but was held to only two points with foul trouble. However, Elijah Kersey stepped up with 17

Ridgeline sweeps individual honors in Cache Valley Media Group All-Region 11 Football Teams for 2021 – Cache Valley Daily

Photo by Rick Parker MILLVILLE – It was a perfect season for the Ridgeline Riverhawks and they captured the 4A state football championship in dominating fashion. And just as they dominated the field, they dominate the individual awards and All-Region 11 teams as voted on by members of the Cache Valley Media Group* who regularly follow high school football. Quarterback Kaden Cox was recognized as the MVP; running back Noah White was recognized as the Offensive Player of the Year; linebacker Jaxen Hollingsworth was recognized as the Defensive Player of the Year; and, head coach Travis Cox was a unanimous selection as the Coach of the Year. Kaden Cox / Ridgeline – Overall MVP Kaden Cox was not only the most prolific passer in 4A, but arguably among the best quarterbacks regardless of classification in the entire state of Utah. Unofficially, Cox threw for 3,774 yards (#3 in the state regardless of classification) and 55 touchdowns (#2 in the state regardless of classification and 30 more than the next closest quarterback in 4A). Late free throws seal Desert Hills win over Mountain Crest – Cache Valley Daily

SMITHFIELD – Garrett Austin was doubled under his own hoop when he found Braxton Harris all alone at the three point line, for his only bucket of the game, to cut the Desert Hills’ lead to five. With four minutes left the Mustangs trailed 37-32 after the clutch bucket. The Mustangs and Thunder traded two point baskets over the next three minutes before Mountain Crest sent Thunder players to the line. Eli Allred closed the door, making all six of his free throws over the last minute for the 47-37 Desert Hills win. The Thunder missed their first eight free throws, including their first in the fourth quarter, but made their last 11 to close out the game. The Mustangs struggled at the charity stripe for a second straight night, going 8-14. The night before Cedar was 6-12 from the free throw line, while Mountain Crest was only 1-5. Against Pine View the Mustangs were 7-11 to the Panther’s 7-10, but could not carry that success through the weekend of the North vs South Showcase. Defending state champs beat Mustangs, 60-37 – Cache Valley Daily

Photo by Clint Allen SMITHFIELD – Cedar was up 16-8 after the first quarter before their top two guards got hot and took over the game. Zab Santana scored 14 of his game high 22 point in the second quarter and Ty Harrison scored ten of his 17 in the third. The Reds were up 34-20 at half before pouring on an 18-5 third quarter to cruise to a 60-37 win. Shots didn’t fall for the Mustangs as they had two single digit quarters. Two straight games Mountain Crest has given up 18 points while scoring a combined five in the third quarter. Preston Lofthouse was the leading scorer again for the second straight night with 11, but was held to just four points in the second half. Seven other players scored for the Mustangs, but no one had more than five. It was a physical game but Cedar was able to draw the whistles, going 6-12 from the charity stripe to Mountain Crest’s 1-5. The Reds’ size bothered the Mustangs all night and they dominated the glass throughout the game. Mountain Crest had only nine turnovers to Cedar’s 11, but could not generate any transition points.
