Nearly 100 local students in nine different sports recognized on spring Academic All-State teams – Cache Valley Daily

LOGAN – The Utah High School Activities Association (UHSAA) recently announced its spring Academic All-State teams. Dozens of student athletes from Region 11, Box Elder High School and Rich High School were recognized for their achievements in their designated sports and for their success in the classroom. In total, 90 local students were recognized in nine spring sports. “For over many years the UHSAA has presented the Academic All-State Award to recognize those students who have excelled in the classroom as well as in athletic competition,” says UHSAA Executive Director Rob Cuff. “Individuals are selected for this award on the basis of their athletic ability and academic proficiency. “With over 100,000 students participating in high school activities, this award is the most prestigious honor the UHSAA presents to senior students. On behalf of all those who are associated with the UHSAA, I congratulate and pay tribute to those individuals who have earned and received this distinguished award.“ The nomination process for these awards opened on March 19 and continued through April 18. Bear River wins, but Ridgeline, Green Canyon and Mountain Crest falter in 4A baseball playoffs Tuesday – Cache Valley Daily

Miller Field at Brigham Young University on Tuesday. #8 Bear River outlasted #5 Desert Hills 11-10 in an up and down game in the consolation bracket. With the win, they will play Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Utah Valley University against fellow Region 11 foe Mountain Crest. #6 Ridgeline has struggled to get runners on base and across home plate, while also stopping their opponents from doing the same. On Monday, Ridgeline lost 10-1 vs. Dixie and Tuesday wasn’t much better. The Riverhawks lost 8-1 vs #2 Crimson Cliffs, meaning Ridgeline is officially eliminated from the playoffs. Later in the day, #7 Green Canyon suffered a similar 8-1 loss to #3 Dixie. But the Wolves were not eliminated from contention. They will face the team who took out the Riverhawks – Crimson Cliffs – at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in the consolation bracket at Utah Valley University in Orem. PROVO – In the opening round of Bracket Play of the 4A baseball playoffs at Brigham Young University, #4 Mountain Crest began the day with a 5-1 victory over #5 Desert Hills. The #8 Bear River Bears held a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the 7th inning before a two run walk off home run by #1 Snow Canyon propelled the Warriors to a 3-2 win. #7 Green Canyon pulled off an upset with a 5-1 victory over #2 Crimson Cliffs. In the nightcap, the #3 Dixie Flyers got the best of #6 Ridgeline 10-1. All teams will be back in action Tuesday, with Mountain Crest and Green Canyon advancing in the winner’s bracket. But since it is a double elimination tournament, Bear River and Ridgeline are not out of it yet. Maren McKenna earns CVMG Prep Basketball Player of the Week award in final week of season – Cache Valley Daily

NORTH LOGAN – Green Canyon senior guard Maren McKenna saved her best games for the last week of the season and earned her first Cache Valley Media Group Player of the Week award. McKenna had a huge week for Green Canyon who went 2-0, including a victory over Sky View to earn a tie for second place in Region 11. McKenna had 30 points, 16 rebounds and 5 steals against Sky View. She followed it up with 21 points, 13 rebounds, 2 steals and 3 blocks in GC’s win over Bear River. For the week, McKenna averaged 25.5 points and 14.5 rebounds (both of which led Region 11 in boys and girls) along with 2.5 assists, 3.5 steals and 1.5 blocks. Four other players made up a stacked class of player of the week candidates – Elise Livingston (Ridgeline girls), Hannah Radford (Sky View girls), Justin Anderson (Logan), and Tanner Davis (Sky View boys). Livingston posted her first 20-point games of the season by scoring 24 against Mountain Crest and then 22 against Logan, making 18 of her 21 field goals for the week. Local wrestlers compete at state championships – Cache Valley Daily

HYRUM – The top wrestlers from the top of Utah are preparing to compete for state titles later this week. In fact, a total of 236 athletes from eight area high schools compete at the Utah High School Activities Association state championships this week. In fact, the Rich High School boys competed last week with one of their athletes finishing as a runner up in his weight class and one of their girl wrestlers won a state title in her weight class this week. Sophomore Jordan Johnson finished in 2nd place among all 1A, 2A and 3A wrestlers in the 285 lb weight class. Other Rich High School boys wrestlers competing at state included Junior Dallas Vansyoc (138 lbs), Senior Max Parry (157 lbs), Senior Justus Allred (165 lbs), Senior Benjamin Sellers (175 lbs) and Freshman Boston Jolley (215 lbs). The 1A/2A/3A girls wrestling tournament took place Wednesday and Thursday in Richfield with Rich finishing 4th overall and several girls bringing home individual medals to Randolph. Carter Davis second straight Sky View athlete named CVMG Prep Basketball Player of the Week – Cache Valley Daily

Carter Davis SMITHFIELD – Sky View boys basketball wing Carter Davis has been named Cache Valley Media Group Prep Basketball Player of the Week, presented by McDonalds, for the week of Feb. 6-10. Davis is the second Bobcats basketball player to be named CVMG Player of the Week this season, joining Hannah Radford who won the award last week. In two games this past week, Davis had back-to-back 20-point games, helping the Bobcats secure the Region 11 title in a week where they played the second and third-place teams in the region. On Wednesday against Logan, Davis scored 20 points on 7-for-11 shooting while also accumulating a career-high seven assists. Then on Friday against Ridgeline — the deciding game for the region title — Davis scored a season-high 23 points with five rebounds, three steals and two blocks. Overall for the week, Davis averaged 21.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists, 2.5 steals and 1.5 blocks while shooting 60.7 percent from the field and 40 percent from three.
