Utah State rearranging seating for student section, the HURD | Sports

Utah State University announced a new seating arrangement for the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum. The changes will feature an increase in courtside seating and, most notably, a shift in seating for its famous student section, the HURD. For decades, the iconic wall of 4,000 students wrapped around the baseline adjacent to the opposing bench and all the way across the sideline across both team’s benches. The positioning of students mere feet away from players on the court, and especially during inbounds plays on that sideline, made it one of the most unique in all of college basketball. The old seating arrangement for the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum prior to April 13, 2026 The new seating arrangement removes student seating from sections N, M, L and most of K. These sections are the sideline seats across from the team benches. Courtside seating is also being added along the entire sideline where previously these had been just in front of sections N and M. The displaced student seating will be moved to sections C, D and E and the upper portion of section K, from row 20 on up, will remain available for students. All in all, sections C through J, comprising

Jeremiah Fears sets a franchise rookie mark with 40 points as the Pelicans top the Jazz 156-137 | Sports

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Jeremiah Fears set a Pelicans rookie record for points in a game with 40, and New Orleans snapped an eight-game losing streak on Tuesday night with a 156-137 victory over the Utah Jazz, who lost their 10th straight. Fears, the seventh overall pick in the draft, shot 17 for 29 from the field and 1 for 7 from 3-point distance. Jordan Poole scored 34 points, including 22 in third quarter, when New Orleans set a franchise record for points in a period with 50. The Pelicans also set a franchise record for points in a game, despite playing without usual starters Zion Williamson, Trey Murphy III, Dejounte Murray, Herb Jones and Saddiq Bey. While Murphy (right ankle) and Murray (bruised left hand) were injured, Williamson, Jones and Bey were all active, but were left on the bench for New Orleans’ final home game of a second-straight non-playoff season. Poole, who has spent more than half the season on the bench, shot 7 of 16 from 3-point range in his seventh start for New Orleans. Rookie Micah Peavy scored a season-high 20 points, 2023 first-round draft choice Jordan Hawkins added 25 points for New Orleans and 2025

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Chet Holmgren scored 21 points, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander added 20 and the Oklahoma City Thunder had a season-high point total to rout the Utah Jazz 146-111 on Sunday night. Ben Jacobson’s Scheme By the Numbers Part 2 — Controlling, disciplined defense | Sports

New Utah State men’s basketball head coach Ben Jacobson will usher the Aggies into the Pac-12 era with the hope that Utah State can maintain success. As the headline of this article firmly notes, this is part two of this series on Jacobson’s scheme. Part one was about the offense and this one will break down the defense. Aggie fans became used to (albeit sometimes weary of) Eric Haut’s matchup zone defense. It was a defense that essentially switched everything and had a core principle of “five guys guarding the ball.” Put simply, Northern Iowa does not run a defense like that. It’s a much more traditional man scheme and even has limited switching in defending ball screen and handoff actions. Here’s a rather typical Utah State defensive possession this past season. There were three (maybe four) switches on this play. Now, here’s a Northern Iowa defensive possession for comparison. Watch for places where USU’s defense might have switched and how UNI approaches those points in the possession. There were at least two, probably three points where this year’s Aggies would have switched. The first two passes around the perimeter were the kinds of situations where USU’s guards — Drake

Rockets win their 5th straight, beating the Jazz 140-106 behind 25 points from Kevin Durant | Sports

HOUSTON (AP) — Kevin Durant scored 25 points and the Houston Rockets won their fifth straight game, beating the Utah Jazz 140-106 on Friday night. Durant shot 8 of 12 from the field and added five assists. It was the 45th time this season he’s scored 20 or more points while shooting 50% or better. That’s second among NBA players behind Oklahoma City star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who has done it 47 times. Amen Thompson had 21 points and Alperen Sengun scored 19 for the Rockets (48-29), who clinched a playoff spot Thursday. They are a game behind Denver for fourth place in the Western Conference. Cody Williams led the Jazz with 27 points and 11 rebounds, but they shot just 5 of 27 from behind the 3-point line. Utah (21-57) has lost eight consecutive games and 12 of 13. Houston scored the first five points and never trailed. Tari Eason capped an 11-3 run with less than three minutes left in the first quarter to push the lead to 10, and the Rockets led by 12 after 12 minutes. Utah scored the first five points of the second, but the Rockets answered with a 12-2 burst to push their lead

Ben Jacobson’s Scheme By the Numbers Part 1 — New identity for Aggies on offense | Sports

Utah State announced Ben Jacobson as the 23rd head coach in men’s basketball history on Monday and introduced him Tuesday morning. The openly stated goal and hope for his tenure is to take the Aggies to at least the second weekend of the NCAA Tournament, something that has eluded the program in the entire life of the 64-plus team era of the Big Dance. With each coaching change USU’s fanbase has endured — four such transitions since 2021 — comes the uncertainty surrounding what kind of basketball the new head of the program will bring. Jerrod Calhoun brought a fairly unique matchup zone defense and a transition-heavy style on offense. Ryan Odom led the Aggies to record-breaking 3-point shooting numbers. Craig Smith injected energy into his team and the program. Danny Sprinkle provided stability and a calm demeanor for a season that began with the chaos of losing nearly the entire team. Jacobson will put his own stamp on Utah State history. And his style will be unique to his immediate predecessors, especially Calhoun. Jacobson runs a “Five-Out” offense and has used it to great effect. He generated some buzz in the 2019-20 season when his offense finished 23rd

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Evan Mobley and Donovan Mitchell each scored 34 points and the Cleveland Cavaliers used a late fourth-quarter surge to beat the Utah Jazz 122-113 on Monday night. Mobley set a season-high for points, including eight dunks, and also had 16 rebounds and three blocks. The 7-footer capped the decisive 14-1 run with a three-point play that made it 117-106 with 3:14 remaining. James Harden had 13 points and 14 assists for the Cavaliers, who have won five straight road games and six of their last seven overall. Cody Williams scored 26 points, Kyle Filipowski had 20 and Ace Bailey added 19 for Utah. The Jazz have lost six straight and 10 of their last 11. Bailey made an acrobatic layup that gave the Jazz their first lead since the opening moments at 105-103 with 5:40 to play, but then sat for the rest of the game. Mobley had three dunks in the second quarter alone. The first one started a 13-0 run that made it 44-30 for Cleveland. The other two slams helped fuel a 12-5 run to end the half with a 63-53 advantage after the Jazz had cut it to 3 points. Jarrett
