Utah State announces Wesley Brooks as next head coach of women’s basketball | Sports

LOGAN — The embattled Utah State women’s basketball program will turn its future over to Ohio State assistant coach Wesley Brooks as the Aggies look to bounce back from a turbulent five-year stretch. “Wesley is a great developer of people, not only as high-preforming student-athletes, All-Americans and professionals, but as young women in society,” USU Athletic Director Diana Sabau said in a statement. “Under his leadership, we look forward to advancing the trajectory of women’s basketball at Utah State University.” Brooks holds two decades of coaching experience, starting out as a manager under then-head coach John Beilein at West Virginia and later becoming a graduate assistant and eventually director of basketball operations with the Mountaineers. For the 2007-08 season, he took on an assistant coaching role at Robert Morris, moving on shortly after to have stints at, Texas Southern (2008-11), North Texas (2011-15), Utah (2015-17), Michigan (2017-21) and most recently Ohio State (2021-24).  “I am thankful and honored that Diana and President (Elizabeth) Cantwell have given me the opportunity to lead the Utah State women’s basketball program,” said Brooks in the Aggies’ press release. “I am excited and look forward to establishing a program that Aggie nation can be proud

“We can win a national championship,” Highlights from the intro presser for Jerrod Calhoun and Wes Brooks | Sports

LOGAN — Utah State got the unique opportunity to introduce two head coaches in one press conference, allowing fans to meet with new women’s basketball head coach Wes Brooks and men’s basketball head coach Jerrod Calhoun in the Wayne Estes Center Tuesday morning. The two coaches are taking over programs that are at very different stages. The men’s side just won an NCAA Tournament game and is on a six-year run that’s included five qualifications to the Big Dance, two regular season titles and a pair of conference tournament titles. The women’s team is on a five-year run where the average yearly win total is in the single digits (and the highest single-season win total in that span is 11). Brooks and Calhoun are very aware of those facts and their respective comments reflected as much. Calhoun said it pretty bluntly that “this is not a rebuild, this is a reload.” He even went above and beyond with his goals for the program, bypassing talk of repeating as Mountain West champions and going all the way to the top. “I told (the players) if they come back, they run it back, we can win a national championship. I truly believe

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Caris LeVert scored 26 points and Jarrett Allen had 21 points and 12 rebounds, helping the Cleveland Cavaliers beat the Utah Jazz 129-113 on Tuesday night. LeVert started in place of Donovan Mitchell, who missed Tuesday’s game due to injury management. Evan Mobley added 21 points for the Cavs, and reserve Sam Merrill had 18 points on six 3-pointers. Cleveland had 38 assists on 46 baskets and shot 54% from the field. “We try to take the play that’s there and we have enough talent on this team that if we just make the simple play, defenses are going to have to make tough choices,” coach J.B. Bickerstaff said. The Cavaliers also scored 26 points off 20 Jazz turnovers while leading wire to wire. They stopped a four-game road losing streak. “This was one of those nights where it felt like we played our type of basketball,” Allen said. “The ball was moving. We were talking on defense.” Brice Sensabaugh made six 3-pointers and scored 22 points for Utah, matching his season high in his rookie year. “I think it was just a matter of time before I started getting my rhythm,” Sensabaugh said. “I

The biggest task for USU’s new head coach has little to do with X’s and O’s – Cache Valley Daily

Youngstown State head coach Jerrod Calhoun gives directions against the Michigan in the first half of an NCAA college basketball game in Ann Arbor, Mich., Friday, Nov. 10, 2023. (AP Photo/Paul Sancya) LOGAN — Roughly 48 hours after Jerrod Calhoun was officially announced as head coach of men’s basketball at Utah State, the program received some welcome news. Isaac Johnson, the team’s starting center last year who showed several flashes of brilliance, indicated his intention to stick with the Aggies for his junior season on his Instagram account. “We ain’t done yet,” the 7-foot center said to conclude his post. That re-commit, or “run it back” post — since such things are almost necessary in the transfer portal age of college sports — is one of what Calhoun and Aggie fans everywhere will be hoping to see more of in the coming days. It also represents the most important task the new head coach now faces: Keep this roster together at all costs. Funnily enough, “all costs” can be literal, given NIL, but figuratively it’s very true as well. Of the 16 players on last year’s roster, the only one obligated to leave is Darius Brown who has no eligibility

De’Aaron Fox had 24 points and 12 assists, and Domantas Sabonis had 17 points and 11 rebounds for his 57th straight double-double. That helped the Kings complete a three-game series sweep against Utah for their first season sweep against the Jazz since 2001-02. Sacramento moved into a tie for seventh place in the Western Conference with Phoenix but remained two games behind sixth-place Dallas in the race to avoid the play-in tournament. Brice

San Antonio also shot 51.8% from the field and were well above .500 from 3-point range until missing their final four attempts and finishing 16 of 33. “That’s Spurs basketball … and Pop preaches it all the time,” Vassell said of coach Gregg Popovich. “We were knocking down shots today and everybody was sharing it.” Jeremy Sochan, Julian Champagnie and Malaki Branham all scored 17 points for San Antonio. But it was Vassell who was the catalyst. “Get downhill, get to my spots, pick them apart. If they’re trapping me, I can
