Utah Jazz face steep climb out of Western Conference cellar following worst season in team history | Sports

Utah Jazz Last season: 17-65, missed playoffs. COACH: Will Hardy (4th season, 85-161). SEASON OPENER: Oct. 22 vs LA Clippers. DEPARTURES: C John Collins, G Collin Sexton, G Jordan Clarkson, F Johnny Juzang. ADDITIONS: G Ace Bailey, G Walter Clayton, Jr., F Georges Niang, C Kevin Love, F Kyle Anderson, C Jusif Nurkic. BetMGM championship odds: +100,000-1. What to expect Fresh off their worst season in franchise history, things might not be much better for the Utah Jazz entering Will Hardy’s fourth season at the helm. The Jazz traded away veterans John Collins, Collin Sexton, and Jordan Clarkson in the offseason, freeing up playing time for younger players as they try to rebuild around former NBA All-Star Lauri Markkanen. While Markkanen is a capable scorer and playmaker, there aren’t really any proven secondary scorers with him. Utah is counting on younger players like Keyonte George, Isaiah Collier, Brice Sensabaugh, Kyle Filipowski, and rookie guard Ace Bailey to have breakthrough campaigns in what promises to be another season spent in the Western Conference cellar. Strengths and weaknesses The good: Utah has tons of size around the basket to make it tougher for defenses to attack the rim. Markkanen is a 7-footer

Notes and Coaches’ quotes from Aggie Madness event | Sports

Utah State men’s and women’s basketball put on a show for fans in the Wayne Estes Center on Monday evening with its annual Aggie Madness, aiming to build hype for the upcoming Aggie basketball season. Though the event itself lacked the basketball substance that will quench the thirst for Aggie hoops, it helps set the stage for the true appetizers coming later this month. Players from both teams participated in a small handful of events, starting with a relay race, then a 3-point shootout and dunk contest. The 3-point shootout, which featured a pair of players (one from each of the men’s and women’s teams) was won by Luke Kearney and Marina Asensio. That duo beat the pair of Brayden Boe and Andjela Marojevic in the final round. The other pairs featured Tucker Anderson/Karyn Sanford and Kolby King/Elise Livingston. The dunk contest, which featured four of the Aggie freshmen, was won by Adlan Elamin. He defeated Kingston Tosi in the final round with a dunk featuring Elamin jumping over the 6-foot-8 forward Garry Clark. 𝐓𝐇𝐑𝐎𝐖. 𝐈𝐓. Despite Kessler’s lingering contract situation and dim prospects, the Jazz are betting on youth | Sports

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Unburdened by expectations, the young Utah Jazz feel like they have nowhere to go but up. The Jazz, who had the worst record in the NBA last season at 17-65, lost three of their top scorers — John Collins, Jordan Clarkson and Collin Sexton — clearing the way for a monumental youth movement. First-round draft picks Ace Bailey and Walter Clayton Jr. join several young teammates with limited experience. There are nine players on the roster from the last three drafts. The few veterans Utah acquired will most likely be a larger presence in the locker room than the court. The Jazz are led by one of the youngest coaches in the league. Coach Will Hardy, 37, played against newcomer Kevin Love as a teenager in AAU basketball. Other key additions are Georges Niang, who previously spent four seasons with Utah, Kyle Anderson and Jusuf Nurkic. But Utah owner Ryan Smith allowed president of basketball operations Austin Ainge to give the keys to the inexperienced players and let them learn on the job. “There’s no way that we’re going to be able to get to our ultimate goal of winning a championship if it’s not

Utah State women’s basketball announces full 2025-26 schedule | Sports

The Utah State women’s basketball team has announced its full schedule now with the release of the Aggies’ conference slate of games. The team had already announced its non-conference schedule but now have the entire 29-game slate for the 2025-26 season. Wes Brooks’ new-look Aggies will begin the season unofficially on Oct. 30 with an exhibition against San Francisco State. Just over a week later, Utah State will welcome in-state rival Utah to the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum. It’ll be the first time the Utes visit Logan since 2017. This year’s non-conference schedule features an easier balance of home and away games. In 2024, the Aggies played eight consecutive games away from home, going 34 days between games played in Logan. There will be another long gap this year, but notably shorter at 23 days between the game against Stanislaus State (Nov. 20) and vs Idaho (Dec. 13) Utah State’s first conference game will come on Dec. 17, a home game against Air Force. And just like the men’s team, the women’s team will spend four of the next six games on the road. They will also have a fairly unique scheduling quirk by playing Wyoming in back-to-back games. First

Utah Jazz to wear patch honoring Frank Layden on their jerseys this season | Sports

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah Jazz players will wear a Frank Layden patch on their jerseys this season to commemorate one of the most influential figures in club history. Utah Jazz Layden, the team’s former coach, general manager and president, died July 9 at 93. The name “FRANK” will be on the left chest, and players and coaches will wear a “1” circle patch on their warm-ups beginning Oct. 8 in a preseason game against Houston. The No. 1 jersey was retired by the team in 1989 in honor of Layden. Layden, known as much for his quick-witted personality as his coaching or front-office skills, coached the Jazz from 1981-89 and had 277 wins, third-most in franchise history. He’s the only coach in Jazz history to be named NBA coach of the year, earning the honor in 1984, when he also was honored as executive of the year. What Bronco Mendenhall had to say about Utah State’s new AD | Sports

LOGAN – During his weekly press conference earlier today, Utah State football head coach Bronco Mendenhall was asked about his new boss, the recently announced next athletics director for the Aggies, Cameron Walker. Mendenhall had already met with Walker prior to the announcement as the coach was consulted throughout the process of hiring the new AD. “The process was really extensive, obviously, right? President Smith had a chance to visit with each candidate. There was a search firm. There also was a search committee, as well as there were a number of coaches that were on a separate panel,” Mendenhall said. “And then independent of all of that, I had a chance to visit with the finalists in person.” Mendenhall spoke glowingly of the experience and background Walker will bring to the position. Walker completed a Juris Doctorate at Arkansas following his time as an athlete in baseball at both Ricks College and Southern Virginia. He’s since held numerous roles across time at Utah Valley University, UCF and most recently at Tennessee where Walker was the senior deputy athletics director and chief strategy officer. His many duties across those jobs included NCAA compliance, legal affairs, facilities, NIL fundraising and working
