USU women’s basketball continues improvements despite injury to Gayles | Sports

Wes Brooks’ rebuild of the Utah State women’s basketball program is making clear progress, even if the overall record still doesn’t look the way Brooks or Aggie fans ultimately want it to be. Following a 74-61 win over San Jose State on Wednesday, this year’s team became the first Lady Aggies squad to win six games before the end of December since the 2016-17 season. It’s a stat that is both sobering in the implication for what’s happened in the eight-year interlude, yet encouraging in how it indicates progress. “That’s just crazy to me,” Aggies’ forward Jamisyn Heaton said of that stat. “But it feels good to be a part of a team like that. And this team is so close. It’s so different. I love each and every single one of these girls. So it’s just been a fun year. And I’m excited to see what else we can prove this year.” “We are moving in the right direction,” head coach Wes Brooks said. “I wish we had eight or nine [wins]. We want to start being in postseason consideration.” Utah State women’s basketball Wes Brooks after his team’s New Year’s Eve win over San Jose State. pic.twitter.com/BiPSYOsmn8 —

Utah State football’s biggest offseason needs | Sports

Utah State’s 2025 season has officially come to a close, which means it’s time to look ahead to the 2026 season. It’s hard to set expectations for how the offseason will go down thanks to the chaos of the transfer portal, but at the very least it should be less hectic than the previous one which featured an almost entirely new roster in addition to the new coaching staff. Said staff, led by head coach Bronco Mendenhall, are already hard at work figuring out what needs have to be met to build on their first season at Utah State. The 6-7 record in 2025 was decent in context, but is not the kind of season fans will be content with for long. Utah State fans haven’t seen a winning campaign come through Logan since 2021, and they’ll be itching for one to come in 2026. The following are the most important things for Utah State to address ahead of next season. They are certainly not the only things, but these need to be checked off or next year may not be much better than this year. And that’s not something Mendenhall and Co. can afford if they want to overstay

Great defense overcomes Utah State’s turnover struggles in win over Fresno State | Sports

Ugly wins are still wins and that’s what Utah State will take home from California as it downed Fresno State 72-63 Tuesday evening. In the resumption of Mountain West play, the Aggies were 15 points favorites against Fresno State, though the most they led by all night was 13 and allowed the Bulldogs within six points in the final minute. USU head coach Jerrod Calhoun maintained a positive outlook, saying “we’re not going to sit around and moan and groan about getting a win.” Though he certainly didn’t let them completely off the hook for the product that was put on the court. The Aggies committed a season-worst 20 turnovers and tied their season high with 23 personal fouls, sending Fresno State to the free-throw line 22 times. On the other side, the Bulldogs gave the ball away 18 times and shot 34.5% from the field. “You guys should be happy you didn’t have to watch that live [in person],” Calhoun said to the media in the post-game zoom press conference. “I’m sure Coach [Vance Walberg] felt the same way.” Games against Fresno State have been an adventure for Utah State. Even with some of the best Aggie teams going

Utah State basketball vs Fresno State preview: How to watch, team breakdowns, projected starters, injuries | Sports

After a 10-day break following a 42-point win in its Mountain West opener, Utah State will get back to conference play with a road trip to Fresno State. This is a game that, on paper, the Aggies are supposed to win by double digits. However, games against the Bulldogs have been surprisingly tricky. Last year, USU trailed Fresno State by as much as 17 points at home before rallying to win by six. Two years ago, the Bulldogs took the eventual MW champion Aggies to overtime in Fresno. This is a game where no assumptions should be made. Here’s all of the necessary info ahead of this game for the Aggies. Bowl games to start the year? “Not a crazy idea” according to bowl executive | Sports

Could college football bowl games, the icon of the sport’s postseason and a staple of the December athletics calendar, be moved to the start of the season? On its face, the notion is radical, even absurd. But it shouldn’t be dissmessed out of hand as it’s a possibility with growing support. The idea of playing bowl games in August, is one that dates back several years. ESPN put out an article in 2022 exploring the idea and featured quotes from key personnel in the collegiate sports landscape. A year later, the now-ended popular show, Pardon the Interruption, saw its hosts Tony Kornheiser and Michael Wilbon discuss the very same idea. As recently as this past August, former NFL QB Christian Ponder threw out the idea on X, formerly Twitter. I need someone to run this up the flagpole at the @NCAA: bowl games should be played at the beginning of the year. Your record this year earns you the bowl game to kickoff next season. Star players play & the game matters. Playoffs only to end the season. — Christian Ponder (@cponder7) August 31, 2025 “I need someone to run this up the flagpole at the @NCAA,” Ponder said in his

Utah State offense struggles early, falls to Washington State in Potato Bowl | Sports

BOISE, Idaho— Although Utah State has had a significant amount of familiarity with the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, wins in said bowl continue to be elusive. In the Aggies’ sixth appearance in the Boise-based bowl Monday they lost for a fifth time, 34-21 to Washington State. For much of the game, it appeared as though Utah State would struggle to score any points as it gained just 49 yards in the first half quarters and didn’t score until there were only 17 minutes left in the game. The Aggies flirted with putting up the fewest points in Potato Bowl history (record was and remains 10 by Tulsa in the 2003 season). Utah State head coach Bronco Mendenhall praised Washington State’s defense, which entered the game as the 27th-best team in the nation in points allowed per game. “Really strong scheme. Really good players that execute well within that,” Mendenhall said. “They were consistently better, just really in most circumstances until the very end where we were able to kind of make a last-minute push. And so I was impressed and they were as advertised for sure.” Utah State’s reliance on All-MW quarterback Bryson Barnes perhaps became its weakness. The Aggies’

How Bronco Mendenhall took Utah State from a potential bowl ban to the Potato Bowl | Sports

When Utah State football head coach Bronco Mendenhall interviewed for and took the job of head coach in Logan, he wasn’t given the prettiest picture of the state of the Aggies gridiron program. Sure, on the outside most could see a team that had just gone through a 4-8 season, and also that Utah State hadn’t posted a winning campaign since 2021. But surely things weren’t that bad, right? “I was told some pretty harsh things about the state of the program and the state of the institution,” Mendenhall said, “including there’s no chance that we’d be able to make a bowl. There would be a bowl ban because the academics weren’t strong enough. That was stated multiple times. There won’t be a chance to play post-season.” These concerns over academics played a role in the firing of Mendenhall’s predecessor, Blake Anderson. Former USU President Elizabeth Cantwell and former Director of Athletics Diana Sabau, cited the NCAA’s Academic Performance Rate (APR) metric in documents outlining their reason for dismissing Anderson. According to those documents, sent by Assistant Utah Attorney General Jaqualin Friend Peterson to Anderson’s legal team, Utah State had seen a decline in its APR from 965 to 899. Furthermore, according to Peterson’s

Future Pac-12 matchup features Utah State and Washington State in Potato Bowl | Sports

Tomorrow the Utah State Aggies and Washington State Cougars will meet on the blue turf at Albertsons Stadium for the 29th edition of the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. The two sides converge not only as opponents but as future conference mates as USU will join WSU in the new Pac-12 in July. That yet-to-be connection adds a little bit of flavor to this edition of the series that has seen several recent entries. The Aggies and Cougars met last year because of the scheduling agreement between the Pac-12 and Mountain West (which is now the subject of a lawsuit) and met in 2021, a game that kicked off USU’s eventual conference-title-winning season. Game Info: Kickoff: 12:00 p.m. (Mountain Time) Location: Albertsons Stadium (Boise, ID) TV Broadcast/Stream: ESPN Radio: KVNU (102.1 FM, 610 AM), kvnutalk.com, KVNU mobile app KVNU Aggie Gameday pregame show with Stockton Jewkes and J.D.
