Utah State blows 14-point lead to UNLV, loses second game in a row | Sports

LOGAN — Missed free throws, poor bench play, cold 3-point shooting in the second half and poor defense in the clutch doomed Utah State to an 86-76 home defeat to UNLV on Tuesday in what head coach Jerrod Calhoun called the team’s “worst loss since I’ve been the coach here.” Utah State started the season 16-1 overall and 6-0 in Mountain West play. But in the last two games, they’re 0-2 with a loss to Grand Canyon last Saturday and now a defeat at the hands of UNLV. Junior forward Karson Templin, along with Calhoun, tied the recent poor performances to the team’s practices. “We need to have better practices, myself included. We’ve been lackadaisical, and there’s no excuse for it,” Karson Templin said. “We just need to play harder in practice and tighten up some of our stuff. And it’s totally on us players.” At the start of Tuesday’s game, the team was far from lackadaisical. Calhoun’s starting lineup of Drake Allen, Mason Falslev, MJ Collins, Adlan Elamin and Zach Keller got out to a quick start, opening up a 9-0 lead. But as the teams began cycling to their bench units, the tides quickly turned. UNLV went on a 12-3

How NCAA gambling scandals and gambling culture have impacted Utah State | Sports

Almost exactly a year ago in January 2025, Utah State’s athletics department received a phone call. No one answered and it was probably for the best. The caller left an angry voicemail, expressing intense emotion tied to the fact that Utah State’s men’s basketball team had just lost to UNLV. The Aggies had started the season 16-1 before playing the Rebels and were ranked 22nd in the AP Top 25 poll. Perhaps most importantly, or at least probably very important to the man on the other end of the phone, Utah State was a -5.5 favorite to beat UNLV. More than one person probably saw a 16-1 USU team up against a 9-7 UNLV squad (that was also on a two-game losing streak) and thought taking the Aggies at -5.5 was free money. But it wasn’t. Utah State lost 65-62, and at least one person, whom USU head coach Jerrod Calhoun strongly suspected was an upset gambler, wanted to take it out their frustration on the Aggies by hurling verbal abuse over a phone line. Such abuse can come over the phone but are also incredibly common on social media thanks to the ability ability for direct messages to be

Wembanyama scores 33 points in 123-110 win over Jazz after being named All-Star starter | Sports

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Victor Wembanyama had a season-high seven 3-pointers and finished with 33 points and 10 rebounds hours after being named an All-Star starter for the first time as the San Antonio Spurs beat the Utah Jazz 123-110 on Monday. Wembanyama, named to his second All-Star team and the eighth San Antonio player to start, shot 7 for 12 from 3-point distance and finished one shy of his career best, set Nov. 13, 2024, against Washington. The Spurs had seven players score in double figures in winning their third straight and for the fifth time in seven games. The backcourt trio of Stephon Castle (18 points), Dylan Harper (15) and De’Aaron Fox (14) combined for 47 points for San Antonio. Keyonte George had 30 points and Jusuf Nurkic added 20 for Utah. The Jazz snapped the Spurs’ eight-game winning streak in the teams’ previous meeting on Dec. 27. San Antonio and Wembanyama made sure there was not a repeat finish. Wembanyama was 3 for 4 on 3-pointers in scoring 13 points in the opening quarter and had 21 points at the half. The Spurs outscored Utah 35-23 in the third quarter and turned a four-point halftime lead into

Thompson scores 23 points, including the 17,000th of his career, as Mavericks beat the Jazz 138-120 | Sports

DALLAS (AP) — Klay Thompson scored all 23 of his points in the first half, including the 17,000th of his career, and six Mavericks scored in double figures in a 138-120 win over Utah on Saturday night as Dallas completed a two-game sweep of the Jazz. Dallas and Utah have played three times in 10 days. Utah won at home on January 8, 114-112. Dallas won 144-122 on Thursday. The Mavericks were without Cooper Flagg (left ankle sprain) for a second straight game and the first injury absences of his rookie season. Dallas was also missing Anthony Davis (finger) and Kyrie Irving (knee) and forward P.J. Washington for personal reasons. The rest of the Mavericks proved to be more than enough against the Jazz for a second straight game. Thompson, coming off the bench, had a pair of 3-pointers and then hit a turnaround jumper in the lane with just under five minutes left in the first quarter to reach the 17,000-point plateau. He shot 7 for 12 overall and 6 for 11 from 3-point distance and led the Mavs in scoring for the second straight game in Flagg’s absence after scoring a season-best 26 in Thursday’s win. Brandon Williams
