Mountain West Watch Mar. 11 — All-Conference picks and final rankings, standings – Cache Valley Daily

The regular season has come to a close and it’s been one of the best in recent memory. The Mountain West has seven legit teams in its ranks and most of those top seven split series with each other. It’s setting up a conference tournament that could be one for the ages. All previous matchups go out the window. The regular season crown has gone to Utah State, but there’s another one up for grabs, and it has a very desirable benefit attached — a punched ticket to the NCAA Tournament. This will be the final week with entries regarding the standings and rankings, so my own power rankings and the average computer rankings have reached their final state. Next week’s final Mountain West Watch will be entirely about the NCAA Tournament and the matchups for all teams that end up making it (with some recap of the conference tournament). Final Standings, AP Poll The regular season finale brings the standings to its final state. Here’s how each of the teams finished, along with AP Poll ranks, if applicable (parenthesis for teams not in the top 25 itself, but receiving votes in the poll, the number being where they’d rank

Great Osobor earns MW Player of the Year, four other Aggies honored – Cache Valley Daily

LOGAN – One day following the release of the media vote for Mountain West all-conference awards, the coach’s vote – which counts as the official selection for the awards – handed the Aggies four different “of the year” distinctions and three all-conference honors. Utah State coach Danny Sprinkle gestures during the second half of the team’s NCAA college basketball game against Fresno State in Fresno, Calif., Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2024. (AP Photo/Gary Kazanjian) Great Osobor earned the most hardware of any Aggie, being named the Mountain West’s Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year along with the obligatory First Team selection. He finished top five in the Mountain West in six different statistical categories — including points, rebounds, field goal percentage and steals — and top 15 in four others. Danny Sprinkle was named the Steve Fisher Coach of the Year, an obvious choice after leading the Aggies from a projected ninth-place finish to a regular season conference title. Josh Uduje earned Co-Sixth Man of the Year, marking the second straight season where an Aggie earned the distinction. He led all sixth man candidates in scoring, averaging 8.7 points per game. Along with Osobor, Darius Brown earned a

Kayla Ard. Photo by Lorene Hale LOGAN, Utah — Utah State University Vice President and Director of Athletics Diana Sabau announced on Sunday that head women’s basketball coach Kayla Ard has been relieved of her duties after four seasons. Utah State sweeps MW Weekly awards, also has six players honored in media All-Conference selections – Cache Valley Daily

LOGAN — Saturday was a celebration of Utah State as a team, with its claiming of the first outright Mountain West regular season championship in program history. Monday has become a day for individual recognition for those on the team. Starting in the morning, Darius Brown and Mason Falslev were each honored by the conference as the Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week, respectively. Brown scored at least 19 points in both games this week with 21 against San Jose State and 19 against New Mexico, including a game-winning 3-pointer against New Mexico to seal USU’s championship. He also racked up exactly nine assists in both games and four total steals. It is the second time Brown’s earned POTW this season. Falslev earned his fourth FOTW by averaging 15.0 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists in his two games this week along with shooting an overall 13 of 16, including 2 of 3 from three. Later in the afternoon, the collective Mountain West media announced their all-conference selections. Voting was conducted by a panel of journalists divided into 11 ballots representing each team market. USU junior forward Great Osobor was named to the First Team and also

Ridgeline girls basketball. Photo by Robert K. Scott. MILLVILLE — Winning back-to-back state championships is often enough to put a satisfying close to a high school career and _ seniors on Ridgeline’s 4A Girls Basketball title-winning squad would be able to look back fondly on such a career. “This will never be done again:” A magical title run for Utah State – Cache Valley Daily

Let’s go over this one last time. In late April 2023, the Utah State basketball program was, as some put it, “in shambles.” A brand-new coach had just taken over but he had no roster. Last season’s stars, including a First Team All-Mountain West selection, the Sixth Man of the Year and an Honorable Mention All-MW player had all either graduated or transferred. Not only the stars, but other starters, backups, even the backup’s backups left the program. A whole 0.14 percent of USU’s points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks production from last year stayed with the program and only three players from the 15-man roster. You know, the stuff that’s been repeated game-in and game-out, with every new set of CBS Sports Network or FS1 broadcasters gushing over these facts and seemingly every national basketball podcast and radio show lining up interviews to ask about it. But there’s a reason that kept happening. And it’s because what Utah State did on Saturday — win the outright Mountain West regular season championship — wasn’t supposed to happen. It should never happen because sports has pretty much never worked this way. Even Danny Sprinkle, the head coach and leader of the

SANDY, Utah (AP) — Cole Bassett scored a second-half goal and the Colorado Rapids collected their first win of the MLS season with a 2-1 victory over Real Salt Lake on Saturday night. Djordje Mihailovic’s pass was flicked by a defender back to Bassett, who fired his shot from the center of the 18-yard box that beat diving goalkeeper Gavin Beavers. Rafael Navarro scored on a penalty kick for the Rapids (1-1-1) in the 43rd. Chukwuemeka Eneli scored in the 22nd minute for Real Salt Lake (1-2-1). Eneli scored on a left-footed shot from close range to the center of the goal. Andrés Gómez had the assist. RSL was without midfielder Pablo Ruiz, who suffered a knee injury in practice three days after the team beat LAFC 3-0 on a snowy field on March 2. Colorado had 11 shots, including six on goal. RSL had nine shots with four on goal. Colorado goalkeeper Zack Steffen made three saves. Beavers finished with four saves. The victory gives the Rapids the first win in the quest for this season’s Rocky Mountain Cup. The teams meet again on May 18 at Sandy and in Colorado on July 20. Free News Delivery by Email

(AP Photo/David Zalubowski) DENVER (AP) — Michael Malone needn’t have worried about his superstar center and a potential letdown when the Denver Nuggets faced the short-handed Utah Jazz. Nikola Jokic played through a bruised right arm that kept him out of shootaround and Jamal Murray scored 37 points, helping the Nuggets bulldoze the Jazz 142-121 Saturday night. Jokic had 26 points, six rebounds and eight assists, and Michael Porter Jr. added 19 points for Denver, which inched within a half-game of Western Conferene leading Oklahoma City, which was idle Saturday night. The Nuggets, who were coming off a big win over Boston, led by as many as 39 points in the first half, which helped them withstand Utah’s third-quarter rally that cut the deficit to 14. The Jazz scored as many points in that third quarter as they did in the first half. Down 78-44 at the break, the Jazz outscored Denver 44-24. Keyonte George led Utah with 29 points and fueled the Jazz’s third-quarter surge that made it more respectable and
