Anthony Davis scores 33, LeBron James takes over late as Lakers hold on to beat Jazz 105-104 | Sports

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Anthony Davis had 33 points and 11 rebounds, LeBron James added 27 points and 14 assists, and the short-handed Los Angeles Lakers beat the Utah Jazz 105-104 on Sunday night. After James missed a 3-pointer — his 10th attempt of the night — in the closing seconds, Utah had a chance to win the game but Collin Sexton fumbled the inbounds pass and couldn’t get a shot off before the buzzer. James made a running left-handed hook with 41.0 seconds left but Walker Kessler made a putback on the other end to keep the Jazz within a basket. Lauri Markkanen scored 22 points and John Collins had 21 as the Jazz lost for the eighth time in nine games. Davis scored 16 points in the third quarter and James took over in the fourth when Davis was resting. James made four straight shots, including a reverse layup and dunk, that pushed the Lakers’ lead to 101-92. The Lakers were without Jaxson Hayes (sprained right ankle), Austin Reaves (bruised hip), D’Angelo Russell (illness) and Cam Reddish (illness). Hayes is expected to miss two to three weeks. Takeaways Lakers: James filled the playmaker role and Davis’ strong

Irving pours in 30 and Grimes scores 24 as Dallas wins again without Doncic, 106-94 over Utah | Sports

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Kyrie Irving scored 30 points and Quentin Grimes had 24 points to power the short-handed Dallas Mavericks over the Utah Jazz 106-94 on Saturday night. Dallas led the entire game despite playing without Luka Doncic (right wrist), Klay Thompson (left foot) and Dante Exum (right wrist). Naji Marshall left in the second quarter and didn’t return because of illness. P.J. Washington had 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Mavericks, who have won four of five games — all without Doncic. The Jazz have lost seven of their last eight games. Lauri Markkanen scored 19 points and Walker Kessler had 18 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks for Utah. The Mavericks led by as many as 20 in the first quarter, thanks to Grimes’ quick start with four 3s in the quarter. Takeaways Mavericks: Dallas made everything look easy when they were shooting 9 for 13 from 3-point range in the first quarter but they had some droughts when Irving wasn’t on the floor. The Mavericks had just one point in the first 5:15 of the fourth quarter and the Jazz cut it to 87-82. Jazz: Utah played with energy but couldn’t shoot, even when

Falslev scores 28 as USU downs North Texas to remain unbeaten | Sports

For a second straight night, Utah State started off a game with a pretty abysmal stretch of offense. And yet for a second straight game the Aggies pulled off a second-half rally and closed it out to win. This time the final tally read 61-57 in favor of USU over North Texas. Utah Sate didn’t miss 18 straight field goals like it did against St. Bonaventure, but the Aggies did shoot 8 of 23 in the first half against North Texas in the title game of the two-game NIT Season Tip-Off tournament. Though in another similarity to the Thanksgiving Day game, Utah State kept the game close despite poor shooting. The Mean Green were themselves only 10 of 31 from the field and held only a 25-23 advantage at the break. As to why the Aggies have had back-to-back poor shooting starts, head coach Jerrod Calhoun said the shot selection hasn’t been the issue. “We’re getting open shots,” Calhoun said. “I’m not hitting the panic button. It’s nothing that we’re doing offensively. If you really watch the tape, the shots are wide open. So everybody’s going to go through a shooting slump or two throughout the season. Got to keep shooting

Utah State’s 4th quarter collapse ends season on a 42-37 loss to Colorado State | Sports

The final game of the season for Utah State became a fitting tribute to the long, trouble campaign. The Aggies led by 13 points early and by 16 points late, and yet they eventually lost 35-30 to Colorado State. “We answered OK,” USU head coach Nate Dreiling said. “It’s just come down to they made more plays at the end than we did. And that’s what happens. We’re playing a good team. We’ve got to finish it. And we just weren’t able to get that one done.” Just about everything was turning up roses for the Aggies early in the game. Colorado State’s first possession ended with a punt and Utah State immediately burst down the field on offense. On the second play from scrimmage, Bryson Barnes (subbing in once again for an injured Spencer Petras) completed a 51-yard catch-and-run to Otto Tia. Though, fittingly for the theme of the game, Utah State couldn’t finish and that drive ended with a missed field goal and zero points. The next three USU drives didn’t fail to get points, though, as the ground game broke out with Barnes and Rahsul Faison leading a rush attack that tallied 140 yards on the ground

San Jose State is disappointed Boise State forfeited but looks forward to volleyball final | News

LAS VEGAS (AP) — San Jose State said Thursday it was disappointed Boise State forfeited its semifinal match in the Mountain West women’s volleyball tournament but that the Spartans were focused on the future. Boise State, which twice boycotted regular-season matches with San Jose State, pulled out of the conference tournament Wednesday night, hours after securing a spot against the Spartans in Friday’s semifinals. With Boise State’s withdrawal, San Jose State advanced to Saturday’s championship match. While the Broncos didn’t announce explicitly why they withdrew, a lawsuit was recently filed in Colorado by players from various schools against the conference and San Jose State officials calling for a Spartans player not to be allowed to participate in the tournament. They cited unspecified reports asserting there was a transgender player on the San Jose State volleyball team, even naming her. U.S. Magistrate Judge S. Kato Crews in Denver ruled Monday that the player was allowed to play, and a federal appeals court upheld the decision the following day. “In this time of Thanksgiving, we are especially thankful for those who continue to engage in civil and respectful discourse,” San Jose State’s statement said. “We celebrate and support all of our students,

USU overcomes ice-cold first half, stays undefeated with win over St. Bonaventure | Sports

Despite missing 18 straight field goals in the first half and facing a nine point deficit early in the second half — the largest faced by USU this season — the Aggies hung on to beat St. Bonaventure 72-67 in the opening round of the NIT Season Tip-off in Orlando on Thanksgiving. Utah State’s offensive numbers entering this week were what jumped off the page for most people. A 98.6 points per game average (first in the nation) and top ten ranks in most shooting percentage categories were about as impressive as it gets. But the question for teams with those kinds of numbers always tends to be what happens when the shots aren’t falling. For Utah State, the answer is just to win anyway. The Aggies have won back-to-back games in uglier fashion with this Thanksgiving win alongside the victory over Iowa earlier this week. “Really what you got look at is, around the country, who’s winning like that,” USU head coach Jerrod Calhoun asked. “In this NIL and this [transfer] portal world, who wins ugly like that, with so many new players? Not a lot. And I think that’s what makes Utah State a different place.” The defining

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Nikola Jokic had 30 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists to lead the Denver Nuggets to a 122-103 victory over the Utah Jazz on Wednesday night. Jokic scored 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting in the first quarter alone to rally Denver from an early 12-point deficit. Jamal Murray added 22 points, eight assists and four steals for the Nuggets. Michael Porter Jr. had 19 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Christian Braun finished with 18 points and seven boards. Collin Sexton led the Jazz with 26 points. Keyonte George scored 23, including five 3-pointers. Walker Kessler chipped in with 16 points, 12 rebounds and five assists. Utah played without injured starters Lauri Markkanen and John Collins. Denver broke open a close game behind a 21-4 run extending from the middle of the second quarter into the third. With three baskets apiece, Murray and Porter fueled the spurt, which gave the Nuggets a 70-53 lead. Utah trailed by double digits the rest of the way. Takeaways Nuggets: Jokic proved too much for the shorthanded Jazz to handle. His efficient offense helped Denver turn a sluggish start into a blowout victory. Jazz: Micah Potter and Svi Mykhailiuk

Volleyball falls to Boise State in first round of MW tournament | Sports

LAS VEGAS, Nevada – Utah State volleyball saw their season come to an end in the first round of the Mountain West Tournament, falling to Boise State, 3-1 (25-19, 18-25, 25-20, 25-23) on Wednesday at Cox Pavilion.  Head coach Rob Neilson “Sometimes competition breaks your heart. I am so proud of this group and their battle all season. Climbing back into that fourth set was special, but ultimately not enough to beat a tough Boise State team. I am so proud of Adna, Kelsey and Kaylie for all they’ve given to our program, and extremely excited for the future of Aggie volleyball with a talented group of future stars. Amazing things to come, the Aggies are on the rise!” Set One After USU defeated the Broncos twice during the regular season, Boise State came out in the opening set determined for a different result, opening up an 8-2 lead to begin the match. After the Broncos led by as many as eight points, Utah State rallied with an 8-3 stretch to claw back within three points. BSU responded with another run to restore their lead and extend it to nine points at 23-14. The Aggies fought back with a 5-0 burst

Boise State withdraws from Mountain West volleyball tournament rather than play San Jose State | Sports

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Boise State, which twice boycotted regular-season matches with San Jose State, pulled out of the Mountain West women’s volleyball tournament Wednesday night even after securing a spot in the semifinals against the Spartans. San Jose State, which received six forfeit victories because of boycotts from Mountain West opponents, is seeded second in the conference tournament and received a first-round bye. Now the Spartans will advance all the way to Saturday’s championship match rather than take the court Friday. Boise State released a statement that read: “The decision to not continue to play in the 2024 Mountain West Volleyball Championship tournament was not an easy one. Our team overcame forfeitures to earn a spot in the tournament field and fought for the win over Utah State in the first round on Wednesday. They should not have to forgo this opportunity while waiting for a more thoughtful and better system that serves all athletes.” The statement came hours after the Broncos defeated Utah State 25-19, 18-25, 25-20, 25-23 in the quarterfinals. Boise State didn’t commit immediately after the match to playing San Jose State. What went into its decision to withdraw from the tournament was unclear, whether it
