Utah State men’s basketball received multiple commits over the weekend and on Monday. A long-time pillar of USU athletics passed away. Former Aggies continued to impress in the preseason. And Utah State soccer claimed its first win of the season. These are the headlines for Utah State athletics-related stories from late last week and over the weekend.
Former BYU, Virginia star Dallin Hall commits to Utah State
On Sunday, the former BYU and Virginia point guard, Dallin Hall, posted on social media his commitment to play for Utah State this upcoming season.
That Hall will be playing this season at all was unexpected, as he has played four seasons of college basketball. However, lawsuits and injunctions that have caused chaos over who is and isn’t eligible currently allow Hall to sign with a team and prepare to play college basketball in the 2026-27 season.
As things stand, Hall is an Aggie and brings valuable experience from his previous four seasons at BYU and Virginia. Hall spent three years with the Cougars and one with the Cavaliers. He’s played 136 total games, six of those in the NCAA Tournament (and three wins in the NCAA Tournament). Hall averaged 7.7 points, 4.1 assists and 2.5 rebounds in his time at BYU. Last year at Virginia, he scored 5.9 points per game while adding 4.4 assists and 3.6 rebounds per game. About half of his scoring has come from beyond the arc, as he hasn’t been aggressive at getting to the paint much of his career. He has a career 3-point percentage of 35.0%.
Dave Kragthorpe passes away
Utah State Hall of Famer Dave Kragthorpe died on Sunday at the age of 93. The former player, coach and administrator impacted thousands of lives and several athletics departments in the western United States. Aggies in NFL Preseason
The nine Utah State football graduates in the NFL continued their impact in the preseason. These players being Jordan Love (QB, Green Bay Packers), Jalen Royals (WR, Kansas City Chiefs), Noah Avinger (DB, Los Angeles Chargers), Wyatt Bowles (OL, Los Angeles Rams), Brady Boyd (WR, Jacksonville Jaguars), Jalen Davis (CB, Cincinnati Bengals), Miles Davis (RB, Carolina Panters), Kyrese Rowan (WR, Denver Broncos) and Deven Thompkins (WR, Las Vegas Raiders).
Just like last week, only eight of the nine players appeared in games, with the veteran Jalen Davis not taking reps in these games to make room for younger players looking to get reps in front of the coaching staff.
Jalen Royals had the biggest performance of any of the former Aggies. He caught six passes for 51 yards in a performance that is creating more and more hype for the second-year Chiefs receiver.

Jordan Love made a brief appearance for the Packers to continue his warm-up for the upcoming season. He played 14 snaps, completed 5 of 7 passes for 56 yards and had one touchdown pass.
Wyatt Bowles played almost as many snaps as all other former Aggies in the NFL combined, logging 84 for the LA Rams. He played 50 of those at center and 28 of those at right guard.
Deven Thompkins was a do-it-all player for the Raiders. He had two catches for nine yards, one rush for four yards, one kick return for 23 yards, and three punt returns for 15 yards. In all, Thompkins tallied 51 all-purpose yards in his 17 snaps played.
Boyd, Miles Davis, Avinger and Rowan each had minor roles for their teams. Boyd had one target in his game but no receptions. Rowan played only two snaps and recorded zero stats. Avinger played 24 snaps and had one tackle. And Davis recorded three rush attempts for 11 yards and one kick return for 22 yards.
USU Soccer claims first win of the season in shutout of Portland
Last Thursday, Utah State soccer put forward its best performance of the young season with a 2-0 victory over Portland. Kunie Hirai and Samantha Sellers netted a goal apiece, which gave the Aggies the cushion they needed to put pressure on Portland and eventually close out the game. Ivy Nystrom started at goalkeeper, making her college debut, and recorded her first shutout at the same time.
