LOGAN – Seventeen games into a 43-game season, Utah State head softball coach Todd Judge resigned Tuesday.
USU Vice President and Director of Athletics Cam Walker said the resignation is effective immediately and assistant coach Shelby Thompson will serve as interim head coach for the remainder of the season.
The Aggies had just returned from their opening series in Mountain West Conference play, winning two of three games at Fresno State over the weekend. The team was 12-15 this year under Judge.
This was Judge’s fourth season in charge of Aggie softball. His 2025 season was one of the most successful in recent history; the Aggies ranked in the top 35 in several offensive categories.
The 2025 team made it’s first ever appearance in the Mountain West tournament. They defeated #19 Baylor, 6-4 and their 4-3 win over Purdue was their first win over a Big 10 opponent in nine years.
Shelby Thompson played club softball under Coach Judge and went on to an outstanding career at UC San Diego as a pitcher.
She joined Judge’s coaching staff before the 2025 season.
In the team’s first game under interim coach Thompson Tuesday afternoon, the Aggies edged Idaho State, 2-1, at Miller Ranch Stadium in Pocatello.
Freshman right hander Kendall Cochran earned the win, pitching all seven innings with a career best seven strikeouts and four hits allowed. Senior catcher Kaylee Erickson’s two-run home run in the sixth inning gave the Aggies all they needed for the win.
