Utah State is coming off a much-needed win at Colorado State where they escaped a rough first half to come away with their first road victory over the Rams in the Jerrod Calhoun era. With the regular season series against CSU now already over, the Aggies will now take on Wyoming for the first time. The Cowboys are coming off their own much-needed close win. Their victory came against San Jose State by a 66-62 score which ended a four-game losing streak.

Nasir Meyer has been arguably the best player for Wyoming this season, along with Leland Walker. Meyer has missed each of the last two games for the Cowboys with a concussion. He’ll likely be back against the Aggies but his status remains uncertain. Wyoming has been without Matija Belic and Jared Harris for some time now.
Utah State Keys to Victory
Shut down Wyoming’s pick-and-roll offense
Utah State has faced a couple of pick-and-roll heavy teams in recent games, such as Grand Canyon and UNLV. The Aggies struggled, and lost, against both teams. Wyoming will bring similar, though also more expansive, challenges for Utah State’s defense through the pick and roll game.
“They’ve got a lot of good guards, probably run more actions than anybody in the Mountain West. Every time down is a different action,” Calhoun said. “(They do) a great job of getting them in sets, giving them a chance to score the basketball.”
Wyoming ranks 27th in the nation in frequency of scoring from the ball-handler in the pick and roll and 42nd in frequency of scoring through a pass to the roll man. The latter of those two is something that separates the Cowboys from the likes of UNLV or GCU. Other teams typically press the advantage with their talented guards. Wyoming can certainly do that with Leland Walker and Nasir Meyer, but bigs like Gavin Gores can easily take a pocket pass and turn it into two points.
He’s really, really good at creating advantages with screening,” Calhoun said of Gores. “He’s one of the best screening bigs in the league. Does a ton of flip screens, which at the last second he’s switching the angle of his screen. He does a great job of finishing. Probably top three athlete in the conference for a young kid. He’s very, very impressive.”
Get the energy back in the Spectrum
Utah State lost its most recent home game, the first home loss all season. It’s a very tough blow to the program’s ego and image when a road team, especially on that is currently hovering around .500, is able to come in and metaphorically plant their flag. The home crowd can’t let that get to them and the guys on the court also have their role as well. Putting the heat on Wyoming early and getting The HURD involved and in the Cowboys’ head will be a great boon to the Aggies.
Rebound the ball
Although Wyoming doesn’t have tons of size, they do rebound the ball very well as a team. They rank 53rd in offensive rebound percentage and 22nd in defensive rebound percentage. Utah State’s own rebounding competence has been up and down this season but needs to be on the high end of that spectrum.
“Where I think (Wyoming is) elite is rebounding,” Calhoun said. “So you’ve got to start and end with your ability to keep them off the glass. And typically in basketball it’s not the first shot that beats you. Right now, our big Achilles Heel is rebounding the ball. So that’s a concern.”
