Utah State’s Bill Garren named Mountain West Video Coordinator of the Year | Sports



LOGAN, Utah – The Collegiate Sports Video Association named Bill Garren, Assistant Athletics Director for Video Operations at Utah State University, the 2024-2025 Mountain West Conference Video Coordinator of the Year.

Garren was selected by his peers in the Mountain West to receive the Conference Video Coordinator of the Year honor.  He is now a finalist for the prestigious Bob Matey National Video Coordinator of the Year award, which will be announced at the annual CSVA banquet on May 21st, 2025, in Houston, Texas.

The Bob Matey award is presented to the Video Coordinator who displays innovation, determination, perseverance and technical skill as portrayed by the late Bob Matey, legendary Video Coordinator from Texas A&M.

Bill Garren is in his 19th year as the Director of Video Operations for the Utah State athletics department and was promoted to Assistant Athletics Director for Video Operations in 2016. Garren is responsible for managing all aspects of athletic video and editing within the athletics department, which includes training and supervising a staff of student assistants to shoot all the football practices and games. His responsibilities also include the day-to-day operations of the video room, managing the digital TV needs, overseeing all Mountain West live streaming events, and assisting with the video needs of USU’s 16 intercollegiate sports. Garren also provides technical support and training for coaches and support staff.

Garren has been voted the Video Coordinator of the Year a total of seven times in the Mountain West (2013, 2017, 2021-25) and four times in the Western Athletic Conference (2009-12) by his peers and the Collegiate Sports Video Association (CSVA). He has been a CSVA member for 24 years. Garren has also been voted as the Mountain West Conference VC representative for all 12 schools and the Mountain West Conference Co-Op VC representative for the national Open Exchange group.

Prior to his current role at Utah State, Garren served as the video coordinator at Idaho State from 2000 to 2002, before moving to San José State for the 2002 season. He was then an assistant football and track coach at his high school in Montrose, Colorado, in 2003 before spending the 2004 and 2005 seasons as video coordinator at Idaho State.

Garren earned a master’s degree in athletic administration from Idaho State in 2005.

Garren, who was an all-conference football player at Montrose (Colo.) High School, played two seasons at Ricks College (currently BYU-Idaho) and then one season at Idaho State before beginning his video career. He and his wife Melinda have three children: Maia (26), Milly (21) and Tyler (16). Maia was an all-Mountain West thrower and school-record holder in the indoor weight throw on USU’s track & field team. Milly is currently a junior and a thrower on the USU’s track & field team while Tyler is a junior in high school and plays baseball and participates in track & field for Logan High School.
