Early reaction to Utah Hockey Club is strong as it enters crowded Salt Lake market | Sports

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The Utah Jazz did more than carve out a place in this city. They became a Salt Lake City institution, continuing to draw sellout crowds long after Stockton-to-Malone eventually turned into a rebuilding team that very well could be going on year three of missing the playoffs. Turns out there is room for more than one major professional team in town. The arrival of the team formerly known as the Arizona Coyotes sparked enormous interest with more than 34,000 season-ticket deposits made in the first 48 hours after becoming available. And only 8% of those deposits for the Utah Hockey Club also were Jazz season-ticket holders, which means even more customers for Ryan and Ashley Smith, who own both teams. “So we immediately became very, very bullish on the demand from the community,” said Chris Barney, Smith Entertainment Group president of revenue and commercial strategy. “Another really interesting nuance about that group is 63% of those people hadn’t even been to an arena event in a year. You don’t really get the chance in sports to cultivate a new audience.” The Jazz, who moved to Salt Lake in 1979 after five years in New Orleans,

Hadli Barerra, Nate Dahle earn CVMG Girls and Boys Prep Player of the Week (Sept. 23-28) | Sports

This week’s Cache Valley Media Group Girls and Boys Prep Players of the Week are Mountain Crest girls soccer forward Hadli Barrera and Ridgeline football quarterback Nate Dahle. The Prep Player of the Week awards are presented by BlueSky Restoration and Center Street Grill. Barrera starred for the Mustangs yet again, earning her second Player of the Week this season. She scored two goals in Mountain Crest’s 6-0 win over Logan in the early game of the week and then led the team to a region title in the latter game. She scored one goal and added an assist for the Mustangs in the 3-1 victory over Green Canyon that sent the Region 11 trophy to Hyrum. Dahle didn’t see a ton of time on the field in Ridgeline’s 68-0 win over Logan last Friday, but did plenty of work in that short time. He completed 9 of his 11 passes for 232 yards and tallied five overall touchdowns — four through the air and one on the ground. Candidates for the Player of the Week award were nominated by Cache Valley Media Group staff and voted on by CVMG high school broadcast and sports staff. Tune in to the Full Court Press on
