Logan Hammer, two former Aggies, qualify for U.S. Olympic trials | Sports

LOGAN — Three Utah State athletes, current and former, have qualified for the United States Olympic Team Trials and a chance to compete in the 2024 Paris Olympics. Logan Hammer, the one current student, qualified in pole vault with former Aggies Chari Hawkins (heptathlon) and Dillon Maggard (5,000 and 10,000 meters) all posting qualifying marks in their respective events.

Hammer set a new personal, Utah State, and Mountain West record in pole vault by clearing 5.62 meters at the Mountain West Outdoor Championships. He later finished 16th at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships to earn Second-Team All-American honors. Earlier this week, Hammer joined the Full Court Press with Eric Frandsen and Jason Walker for an interview about his recent accomplishments and goals for the future.

Hawkins is competing in her third Olympic trials for the heptathlon, having done so in 2016 (placing 15th) and 2020 (sixth). According to World Athletics, Hawkins currently ranks 12th in the world and third among U.S. athletes. Were she to qualify it would mark her first appearance in the Olympics, but far from the first time representing Team USA. She’s competed in two World Championships (2019 and 2024) and two World Indoor Championships (2022, 2023) on behalf of Team USA.

For Maggard, who is currently an assistant coach at Utah State, this is his second Olympic trials. In 2020 he finished 20th in the 1,500 meters semi-final meet and 19th in the 10,000 meters. He qualified for this year’s trials with a 13:22.94 in the 5,000 meters and 27:47.60 in the 10,000 meters.

The trials will be held in Eugene, Oregon from June 21-30. To represent the U.S. Olympic Team, participants must finish in the top three of their event.
