LOGAN, Utah – Utah State head men’s basketball coach Jerrod Calhoun announced on Monday the signing of Deyton Albury and Aubin Gateretse (Aw-bin Gat-er-et-c). Both players have one year of eligibility and will be seniors for the Aggies for the 2024-25 season.
“We are very excited to welcome Aubin and Deyton to the Aggie family,” said Calhoun. “Aubin brings tremendous size and athletic ability that will have a major impact for us on both sides of the floor. One of the many factors we seek to identify in the transfer portal is a winning pedigree and Aubin certainly checks that box as he led Stetson to its first-ever NCAA Tournament this past season. His post-season experience will be a major asset to our program.
“Deyton is a multi-dimensional talent that was a stat-stuffer for Queens University. His ability to score, pass, rebound and defend will provide great value for us. He has had an amazing basketball journey thus far and we couldn’t be more thrilled that he will be an Aggie. He is a wonderful addition for our program.”
Albury, a 6-foot-2, 190-pound guard joins Utah State after spending his junior season at Queens University in Charlotte, North Carolina. During the 2023-24 campaign, Albury averaged 17.0 points, 5.8 rebounds and 3.6 assists as he played 28.3 minutes per game. He started 28 of the 32 games he appeared in and scored in double-figures 27 times, including a career-high 29 points against North Alabama. Overall, he scored 20 or more points in 11 games, which included a 23-point performance at nationally ranked Duke. He also posted three double-doubles during the season as he had 20 points and 10 assists against Winthrop, 29 points and 11 rebounds against North Alabama, and 22 points and 11 rebounds against Lipscomb.
Overall, Albury shot 48.2 percent (187-of-388) during the season, including 36.4 percent (20-of-55) from 3-point range, and 75.0 percent (150-of-200) from the free throw line.
Following the 2023-24 campaign, Albury was named the Atlantic Sun Conference (ASUN) Newcomer of the Year and to the league’s third team. He was also named the ASUN Newcomer of the Week twice during the season and concluded the year ranking in the top 10 in the conference in points, field goal percentage, assists and steals.
Prior to his time at Queens, Albury spent two seasons at Chipola College in Marianna, Florida. During his sophomore season, he started 28 of the 34 games he played in and averaged 10.8 points, 5.1 rebounds and 3.3 assists and was named first-team all-Panhandle Conference. Following the season, Albury was ranked No. 56 in the 2023 JUCO Basketball Top 100 player rankings. During his time at Chipola, he led the Indians to a pair of Panhandle Conference titles, two trips to the NJCAA Division I Tournament and a No. 1 national ranking.
A native of Nassau, Bahamas, Albury graduated from Sunrise Christian School in Bel Air, Kansas, where he was an honors student. He also attended Believe Prep and was named the MVP and Big Shots Prep Champion.
Gateretse, a 6-foot-11, 225-pound center joins Utah State after spending three seasons at Stetson University in DeLand, Florida. During the 2023-24 campaign, Gateretse helped the Hatters to a 22-13 record and their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance after winning their first Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament title. Gateretse was named to the all-tournament team as he averaged 18.7 points and 6.3 rebounds, while shooting 85.7 percent (18-of-21) and recorded a team-best seven blocks over three games.
During the 2023-24 season, Gateretse averaged 11.6 points, 7.6 rebounds and 1.5 blocks as he played 24.2 minutes per game. He started 33 of the 35 games he appeared in and scored in double-figures 21 times, including a career-high 26 points against Milwaukee as he was 12-of-13 from the field. He also had 11 rebounds and a career-high four blocks against the Panthers. Gateretse notched two or more blocks in 16 games during the season and his 53 total blocks on the year are the seventh-most in program history.
Gateretse scored 20 or more points in four games during the 2023-24 campaign. He also posted eight double-doubles on the year and had 11 double-digit rebound outings, which included a career-high 17 boards against Coastal Carolina.
Gateretse shot 71.2 percent (163-of-229) this past season, which is a single-season school record. He also made 62.0 percent (80-of-129) of his free throws.
During his three seasons at Stetson, Gateretse shot 66.2 percent (208-of-314), which is a school record. He also had 79 career blocks, which is the ninth-most in Stetson history.
A native of Charleroi, Belguim, Gateretse attended Calusa Prep School.
