Jordan Clarkson scores 38 as Jazz pull away late to beat Wizards 127-115 – Cache Valley Daily

(AP Photo/Rick Bowmer) SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Jordan Clarkson scored a season-high 38 points, including a 12-0 run down the stretch, to boost the Utah Jazz over the Washington Wizards 127-115 on Monday night. Collin Sexton scored 29 points and John Collins added 17 points, 15 rebounds and a career-high six blocks for Utah (28-34), who had lost eight of nine. The Wizards led 113-111 with 5:21 to play but didn’t make another field goal the rest of the way and extended their losing streak to 15. Clarkson made 5 of 6 shots in his game-deciding surge and now has the most 30-plus point games as a reserve in team history. He also tallied 10 rebounds and seven assists to lead the short-handed Jazz. Jordan Poole scored 32 points, Kyle Kuzma had 23 and Tyus Jones added 21 for Washington (9-52). Kuzma passed 8,000 points in his career. The Jazz played without leading scorer Lauri Markkanen (thigh) and defensive anchor Walker Kessler (foot). Pac-12 departure creates opening for Mountain West and WCC tournaments in Las Vegas – Cache Valley Daily

LAS VEGAS (AP) — With the Pac-12 Conference about to play its final men’s and women’s basketball tournaments — at least in their current state — there is an opportunity for one of the other four leagues in the region to step to the forefront in Las Vegas. The Mountain West and West Coast Conference are the most likely candidates to replace the Pac-12 in terms of recognition, though the Big West and Western Athletic Conference could receive more visibility as well. The Mountain West, in particular, is having probably its best season. ESPN’s Joe Lunardi projects six teams to make the NCAA Tournament, which would top the five the league sent in 2013. Four Mountain West teams made the tournament each of the past two years. “We’ve always been a historically strong basketball conference, so I don’t feel like it’s, ‘Oh, wow, look at the Mountain West,’” MW Commissioner Gloria Nevarez said. “I feel like it’s a little bit more like, ‘OK, we’re back. We’re where we should be.’” For Nevarez, watching the Pac-12 all but disintegrate hits close to home.
