Andrés Gómez has 2 goals, assist as Real Salt Lake blanks LAFC 3-0 in blizzard – Cache Valley Daily

SANDY, Utah (AP) — Andrés Gómez had two goals in the first half and added an assist to give Real Salt Lake a 3-0 home-opening win over LAFC in a game played in a near blizzard on Saturday. The start of the game was pushed back two hours because of the weather and just a couple minutes in was delayed almost an hour because of lightning. Gómez took a feed from Cristian Arango, made a nice touch on the slick field to get around the last defense and beat keeper Hugo Lloris one-on-one in the 18th minute. Gómez, who had one goal last season, got his second in the 41st minute when he took a back pass from Diego Luna and sent a ball into the corner. Gómez sent a cross into the box during first-half extra time and a sliding Arango redirected the ball into the net. He then made a snow angel to celebrate the goal against his former team. Zac MacMath made six saves for RSL (1-1-1) for his 61st shutout. LAFC (1-1-0) had a 16-10 edge in shots. Miami’s seven consecutive home wins over the Jazz have come, in order, by one, two, three, eight, three, four and now six points. Caleb Martin had 18 points and Terry Rozier added 14 for Miami (34-26). Mountain West announces 2024 football schedule – Cache Valley Daily

USU flags in Maverik Stadium. Photo by Clint Allen LOGAN, Utah – Utah State’s 2024 Mountain West football schedule was announced Thursday by the conference office as the Aggies enter their 12th season in the league. In all, USU’s eight conference games will be spread out over nine weeks from Oct. 5 through Nov. 30. Thursday’s release represents the first phase in the 2024 football schedule process. Mountain West national television partners CBS Sports and Fox Sports will now initiate a selection procedure, which will include the shifting of games to non-Saturday dates. That will be followed by the identification of network outlets and kick times. Games against Oregon State and Washington State will not count toward the Mountain West standings and those two squads will not be eligible to participate in the Old Trapper MW Championship. The scheduling agreement strengthens the Conference’s non-conference schedule, enhances the league’s national brand and expands the MW footprint. Utah State’s 2024 Mountain West schedule will include home games against UNLV (10/12), New Mexico (10/19), Hawai’i (11/16) and San Diego State (11/23), and road games against Boise State (10/5), Wyoming (10/26) and Colorado State (11/30), in addition to a non-conference game at Washington State (11/9).

Aggies hold off Falcons’ rally attempts despite Osobor’s 2nd half head injury – Cache Valley Daily

LOGAN — Utah State’s 72-60 win over Air Force was quite literally a bloody one, although the blood content provided more drama than the on-court action at times as the Aggies led by double figures for most of the second half. Mason Falslev, Great Osobor, Ian Martinez and even head coach Danny Sprinkle took cuts that drew blood at some point during the game, though it was Osobor’s cut that produced the most blood and the longest stint off the court. Sprinkle didn’t elaborate on when he got his cut, simply alluding to breaking a clipboard as he “had to get my point across.” The Aggies needed a bit of a wake-up call early in the second half as what had been a 13-point halftime lead (and as high as 15 in the first half overall) had dropped all the way to seven. Air Force outscored USU 8-2 in the opening four minutes of the second frame. At the tail end of that Falcons’ run was when Osobor sustained his injury that forced him out for an extended stretch.
