LOGAN – The Logan High School football team has a new head coach, Carson Mund. The 31-year old with 11 years of coaching experience was introduced to the team Wednesday afternoon, speaking with his players for the first time.
Mund, a graduate of Box Elder High School, began his coaching career at his alma mater in 2010 and has spent a combined (though not completely consecutive) five seasons with the Bees as an assistant coach, including the 2022 season. He also served as an assistant at Weber in 2015 and 2020 and at Logan from 2016-17. From 2019 to 2020 Mund was the head coach of West Jordan where he had an overall record of 8-14 in two seasons. Most of Mund’s assignments as an assistant have been on the offensive side of the ball, including being an offensive coordinator, although Mund has also coached defense at times.
When asked about the decision to apply for and take the Logan job, Mund emphasized the tradition of the school and the community that supports it.
“The tradition here is the thing I think is the biggest draw to Logan High School,” Mund said. “The alumni, the community supports, it’s just a great place to be. You don’t find very many communities anymore that are this bought in to the athletic programs at the high school.”
Logan took several weeks to hire its new head coach after parting ways with Bart Bowen following the end of the 2022 football season. Finding the right candidate to take over the program is something the school wanted to get right.
“Our administration has worked hard to find our student athletes a great role model and someone to continue the great traditions at Logan High,” Logan Assistant Principle and Athletic Director Mitchell Argyle said in a statement. “We are excited that Coach Carson Mund checks all the boxes. He has a good understanding of Logan High, and comes to us with good experience as an assistant as well as a head coach. I look forward to working with Coach Mund as he puts together a staff and works to build our program. Go Grizz!!”
The Grizzlies team Mund is taking over is one that had an up-and-down season last year that included upsetting the eventual Region 11 champion Sky View but a fourth-place finish in the region standings despite that. Logan went 5-6 overall last year – its third losing season of the last four years – ending the year with a narrow road loss to Cedar in the first round of the playoffs.
According to Mund, a big key to getting Logan back to being a consistent program starts with the little league and continues with retaining kids in the program.
“I’m going to be as involved in the little league as I can,” Mund said. “Starting there and then keeping kids. Football programs, to be successful on a consistent basis, need 100-plus kids in their program. So how do we get there? I’m going to evaluate that a little bit more. But the goal is every year to have 100 kids in the program and graduate 25 seniors every year.”
Mund said his style, in terms of offense is RPO based, utilizing multiple looks and personnel groupings. As for what he wants his team to be known for during his tenure, Mund replied quickly and simply: “Bigger, Faster, Stronger.”
