VARIOUS, U.S.A. — At the UW Invitational in Seattle, Washington, and the Stacy Dragila Invitational in Pocatello, Idaho, Utah State’s men’s and women’s track & field teams proved their level of talent as 17 different Aggies placed their names among the all-time top-10 performances in USU history.
The Aggies also came away with six individual titles, three at each competition on the weekend, and 15 total top-three finishes. At the UW Invitational, USU started strong on Friday night with strong performances in a trio of distance events. In the men’s 5,000 meters, Utah State swept the podium as senior Spencer Nelson won the event with a time of 14:06.19, ranking fifth all-time in the event at USU. Senior Bridger Altice and junior Max Wehrli then finished second and third with times of 14:12.02 and 14:12.25, respectively, moving into seventh and eighth all-time in program history.
On the women’s side in the 5,000 meters, graduate senior Mica Rivera also notched the victory with a time of 16:24.57, the third-best time in the event in Utah State history. Junior Morgan French and sophomore Emma Thornley placed sixth and 11th with times of 16:40.94 and 16:52.17, respectively, and moved to fifth and sixth all-time in the event at USU.
Utah State’s distance deeds continued with the men’s distance medley relay where junior Yonas Mogos, senior Christopher Kauffman, sophomore Wyatt Evans and freshman Drew Hogan placed fifth with a time of 9:51.42. The quartet’s time ranks fifth all-time in the DMR at Utah State.
USU continued its record-setting performances on Saturday. In the women’s 800 meters, junior Hannah Davidson moved to 10th all-time in Aggie history with a time of 2:13.09, placing 22nd in the competition. Senior Abby Jensen then placed 23rd in the women’s 3,000 meters, recording the second-best time by an Aggie ever at 9:36.90. Utah State’s final record-setting performances in Seattle came from graduate seniors Caleb Garnica and Mark Crandall in the men’s 3,000 meters. Garnica placed 12th with a time of 8:04.95 while Crandall finished 28th with a time of 8:10.89. The duo moved to third and 10th all-time in the event at Utah State.
Senior Gavin Beierle also won the men’s shot put at the UW Invitational with a mark of 17.15 meters (56-3.25). Sophomore Nate Franz registered runner-up finishes in both the shot put and the weight throw with respective marks of 16.35 meters (53-7.75) and 17.15 meters (56-3.25).
At the Stacy Dragila Invitational in Pocatello, Idaho, freshman Logan Hammer put up the lone record-setting performance, moving into a tie for ninth all-time in the pole vault at Utah State. Hammer won the event with a mark of 5.05 meters (16-6.75).
Elsewhere on the day, senior Zach Meyer and freshman Meredith Price recorded wins in the men’s 60-meter hurdles and the women’s 5,000 meters, respectively. Meyer advanced through the preliminary round with a first-place finish and time of 8.27, retaining first place in the final round with a time of 8.13. Price took first overall in the 5,000 meters with a time of 18:05.55.
USU recorded a further four podium finishes on the day. Senior Skyler Andam finished second in the men’s long jump with a mark of 7.04 meters (23-1.25). Junior Abbey Bryant placed third in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.71. Senior Anna Parkinson finished third in the pole vault with a cleared height of 3.57 meters (11-8.50). Lastly, freshman Rylan Anderson placed third in the 400 meters with a time of 50.30.
