Akin paces Aggies to win at Fresno State, completing season sweep of Bulldogs – Cache Valley Daily

Utah State forward Dan Akin shoots a free throw during the second half of the team’s NCAA college basketball game against Air Force at Air Force Academy, Colo., Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2023. (Parker Seibold/The Gazette via AP) FRESNO – With about three-and-a-half minutes left in Utah State’s eventual 70-53 win, graduate forward Dan Akin found himself unguarded at the top of the 3-point line. That’s not unusual for the forward/center to experience since he’d logged exactly one 3-point attempt in his 147 career appearances thus far. But the Aggies were up by 18 points with not much time left so he lined up a long-range attempt. And proceeded to bank it in straight-on. “I was obviously feeling good at the time,” Akin said. “We were up so I was like might as well get one up.” “He’s never allowed to shoot again,” USU head coach Ryan Odom said jokingly, who later added that he was “happy to see that go in, that was really cool for him.” Such was the night for Akin who recorded two season-high marks, one in points with 23 (just one off his career-high of 24 set with Cal-Baptist in 2021) and another with three blocks.

Utah State gymnastics opens home slate in front of raucous Spectrum Magic crowd – Cache Valley Daily

Photo by Clint Allen LOGAN, Utah – Utah State’s gymnastics team made sure the largest home crowd in a decade did not leave the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum disappointed – despite falling short in its dual meet against BYU on Friday. The Aggies notched two individual event titles and the all-around crown, but the Cougars led wire-to-wire in a 196.650-195.900 victory over Utah State in front of 2,817 fans on Spectrum Magic night. “The atmosphere was absolutely incredible tonight,” said first-year Utah State head coach Kristin White. “To have all these fans come out and support us was amazing. I got to go to the men’s basketball game last week when our team was passing out T-shirts and I could feel (the energy). Since then, I have been so excited to get in this arena and compete in front of our fans.” It was the largest home crowd for a gymnastics meet since Jan. 24, 2014, when 3,286 fans witnessed the Aggies defeat these same Cougars 193.200-192.900. “The atmosphere was great,” said sophomore Dani Kirstine, who tied for second on bars and placed fourth on beam with identical career-high scores of 9.875. “We had a lot of people here, the crowd
