Utah State track & field claims 23 titles at Aggie Invitational – Cache Valley Daily

LOGAN, Utah – Utah State’s men’s and women’s track & field teams hosted the Aggie Invitational this weekend, coming away with 23 total titles. Three Aggies also broke into the top 10 all-time in individual events at USU. The Aggie women were responsible for 14 titles across the two-day competition. Sophomore Maren Garnett led the way with a victory in the pole vault, clearing a height of 3.95 meters (12-11.50). Garnett’s mark also places her fourth all-time in Utah State history. Sophomore Gia Malone also jumped into the top 10 at USU in the long jump, ranking ninth all-time with a mark of 5.85 meters (19-2.50). Malone also won the high jump with a mark of 1.65 meters (5-5.00). Elsewhere for the women, junior Jordan Brandt took first in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.40. Sophomore Olivia Smith also placed first in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:00.47. The Aggies also performed well in the women’s distance events, taking first place in the 800, 1,500 and 5,000 meters. Sophomore Hannah Davidson won the 800 meters with a time of 2:13.68. Bean and Cardozo named Male and Female Athlete of the Year – Cache Valley Daily

LOGAN, Utah – Utah State men’s basketball senior Justin Bean and soccer senior Ashley Cardozo were named the Male and Female Athlete of the Year, respectively, at the annual Robins Awards, recognizing the best of Utah State University. Bean entered Utah State as a walk-on and through hard work and determination, earned a scholarship and became a three-time all-Mountain West selection. Bean also earned a pair of all-MW defensive team honors and helped the Aggies to back-to-back Mountain West Tournament titles, three NCAA Tournament selections and an appearance in the NIT. Bean became just the third men’s basketball player in Utah State history and just the second in Mountain West history to surpass more than 1,000 career rebounds, finishing second all-time in both school and league history with 1,027. Bean’s name is also among the top 20 in school history in 13 career and single-season records and his excellence on the court is mirrored by his success in the classroom, as Bean was a third-team Academic All-American this year to go along with three academic all-Mountain West honors. Nelson’s 1st MLS goal earns Toronto draw with Real Salt Lake – Cache Valley Daily

SANDY, Utah (AP) — Jayden Nelson scored his first MLS goal to help Toronto earn a 2-2 draw with Real Salt Lake on Saturday. Nelson scored the equalizer in the 79th minute for Toronto (2-2-2). Toronto’s Kosi Thompson and RSL’s Justin Meram both had goals in the first 10 minutes. Damir Kreilach staked RSL (3-1-3) to a 2-1 lead just before halftime when he chested a pass from Makiel Chang and finished past Alex Bono. Real Salt Lake outshot Toronto 12-6 and had a 5-3 edge in shots on goal. Zac MacMath saved one of the three shots he faced for RSL.
