SAN DIEGO STATE, California — Utah State volleyball faced down a 2-1 deficit and two San Diego State match points, rallying to win 3-2 over the Aztecs and extend their winning streak to six games on Saturday night. The six-game streak matches USU’s longest since winning nine in a row in 2010. The Aggies took control late in the first set, winning seven of nine points to take a 24-17 lead. A kill from sophomore Tatum Stall punctuated the set for the Aggies, 25-21. The Aztecs responded, turning a 9-9 tie in the second set into a 22-13 lead. The Aggies rallied to within six points but were unable to fully claw their way back, losing the second set, 25-18. The third set followed a similar path as the second with San Diego State breaking an 8-8 tie and taking a 22-14 lead en route to the 25-16 win to go up 2-1 in the contest. Division leading USU hosts Hawaii in key conference game Saturday – Cache Valley Daily

Logan Bonner. Picture by Clint Allen LOGAN—There isn’t better-positioned to win the Mountain Division and go to the conference championship than Utah State. At 3-1, the Aggies are one of two teams in the division with just one loss in conference play. The other is Colorado State, but after losing to USU 26-24 last Friday, the Aggies own the tiebreaker and are the only team that controls its own destiny. Of course, that could all quickly change with another in-conference loss. With four conference games left for the Aggies, the only way to 100 percent guarantee a championship game berth is to win them all. Mountain Division Standings Conference / Overall Utah State 3-1 / 5-2 Colorado State 2-1 / 3-4 Air Force 3-2 / 6-2 Boise State 1-2 / 3-4 New Mexico 1-3 / 3-5 Wyoming 0-3 / 4-3 Next up for Utah State is Hawaii. The Rainbow Warriors come to Logan this Saturday for an afternoon game. Hawaii also has plenty of motivation to get a win. At 4-4, the team from the islands needs two wins in its last five games in order to become bowl eligible. With games against No. 21 San Diego State and Colorado

Mendenhall faces BYU as coach of Virginia – Cache Valley Daily

Virginia coach Bronco Mendenhall watches during the first half of the team’s NCAA college football game against North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C., Saturday, Sept. 18, 2021. (AP Photo/Gerry Broome) For the longest time, Virginia coach Bronco Mendenhall wanted no part of a game with BYU. Too many ties. Too many memories. Too many emotions. But it was always looming on the schedule after he was hired at Virginia (6-2) six years ago. Originally planned for 2019, it was pushed back on the calendar to Saturday, where now Mendenhall will face his former school for the first time in Provo, Utah. He’s not sure the type of greeting he will receive from the BYU faithful inside LaVell Edwards Stadium. Best guess: Favorable. After all, Mendenhall did help the Cougars to five 10-win campaigns in his 11 seasons at BYU. He did lead them to a bowl game each season he was in charge. But loyalty lies deep with BYU blue, not Virginia’s navy. The 25th-ranked Cougars (6-2) are coached by Kalani Sitake, who’s carried on the winning tradition since taking over for Mendenhall. “I really can’t control what kind of welcome I do or don’t receive, but what I can
