While most people’s attention in Cache Valley was turned toward college basketball and March Madness, the Utah State football team quietly began its spring practice. Head coach Bronco Mendenhall, now leading the team for a second season, is looking to build off a 6-7 season in his debut season with the Aggies. Mendenhall brought in 29 newcomers to the 2026 roster, consisting of 29 college transfers and 10 high school recruits. Not all of either will be part of spring ball but most are, giving the coaching staff a full month of practices and scrimmages to get the process of implimenting schemes and systems with the 2026 vertion of the Aggies. There are returning role players, starters and stars from last year’s team, but here we’ll focus on which of those newcomers could end up becoming starters or even stars on this year’s team. McCae Hillstead (QB) The return of McCae Hillstead will very clearly be at or near the top of many Aggies fans’ list of storylines to keep an eye on. The now-junior quarterback threw for 1,062 yards and 11 touchdowns for Utah State as a true freshman in 2023 before departing for the supposedly greener field of

March is here and Utah State men’s basketball fans know what that means: it’s national coaching search season. The departure of the now-former Aggie head coach, Jerrod Calhoun, for Cincinnati was made official by both schools Tuesday morning. USU’s athletics department announced the usual “national search” which will take a little under a week if precedent holds. Speculation will run rampant throughout this whole period and this analysis won’t be too far from that description. This is a collection of potential hires that Utah State could end up considering. And, if Cam Walker is doing his job well, most or all of these names will be on a list that he works his way through. These coaches will represent some of the best (realistic) options for Utah State to hire as the 23rd head coach of the Aggies. For no real reason in particular, this list will be organized into a few different types of coaching hires: Coaches who have lots of wins over several years Coaches who are exceeding expectations in a rough situation Coaches who broke out in 2025-26, but lack track record before now Potential assistant coaches who could be hired as head coach Let’s get started
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — RJ Barrett scored 27 points, Sandro Mamukelashvili added 23 and the Toronto Raptors defeated the Utah Jazz 143-127 on Monday night. Ja’Kobe Walter had 21 points and Scottie Barnes finished with 20 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds as the Raptors (40-31) stopped a two-game skid. They remained a half-game ahead of Atlanta for fifth place in the Eastern Conference — the top six teams are assured a playoff berth without needing to qualify via the play-in tournament. Utah rookie Ace Bailey had 37 points and Brice Sensabaugh scored 24 off the bench for the Jazz (21-51), who have lost six of seven and are eliminated from playoff contention. Toronto outscored Utah 49-30 in the third quarter to open a 29-point cushion. Led by Walter and Barrett, the Raptors shot 54% from 3-point range (20 of 37) and 61% from the field overall. Walter went 6 for 8 on 3-pointers and 7 of 10 from the floor. Barrett was 10 for 15 from the field, including 4 of 5 on 3s. He added six assists without committing a turnover in 25 minutes. Jamal Shead had 15 assists for the Raptors to go with his seven
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Alex Killorn broke a tie off a scramble at 9:09 of the second period, Lukas Dostal stopped 29 shots and the Anaheim Ducks beat the Utah Mammoth 4-1 on Friday night to pad their Pacific Division lead. After the puck was cleared off the goal line behind goalie Vitek Vanecek, the Ducks’ Sennecke ended up with it on the left side and slipped a pass to Killorn for a shot before Vanecek was set. Killorn also had two assists. Ryan Poehling, Cutter Gauthier and Mikael Granlund also scored to help the Ducks — playing without suspended defenseman Radko Gudas — rebound from a 3-2 overtime loss to Philadelphia on Wednesday night at home. They moved three points ahead of Edmonton in the division. Gudas served the fourth game of a five-game suspension for kneeing Auston Matthews in a loss at Toronto on March 12. Matthews tore the medial collateral ligament in his left knee and will miss the rest of the season. Poehling tied it with 6:23 left in the first, beating Vanecek with a nifty move on a short-handed break. Poehling took a pass from Killorn, sped down the left side, cut right and
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — VJ Edgecombe had 22 points and 13 rebounds and Quentin Grimes scored 26 points to lead the Philadelphia 76ers to a 126-116 victory over the Utah Jazz on Saturday night. Trendon Watford had 20 points and nine rebounds, and Adem Bona and Cameron Payne each had 16 points — with Payne adding seven assists — for the 76ers, who won for the fourth time in five games. Philadelphia overcame 17 turnovers and outscored the Jazz 74-52 in the paint. Ace Bailey led Utah with 25 points, seven rebounds, and a season-high five blocks. Kennedy Chandler added 19 points in his debut after signing a 10-day contract with the Jazz earlier Saturday. Elijah Harkless had 15 points, five assists and a season-high five steals. Bez Mbeng had 13 points, seven assists and six rebounds in his first career start. After Utah took the lead on a three-point play by John Konchar, Philadelphia went on a 12-2 run capped by Edgecombe’s running dunk to go ahead 118-110 with 2:35 left. Back-to-back baskets from Kyle Filipowski sparked a 15-2 run that gave Utah a 72-64 lead a minute into the second half. Philadelphia erased the deficit later in
