Bey scores 42 points, Pelicans beat Jazz 129-118 to open 2-game set in Utah | Sports

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Saddiq Bey scored 42 points, Zion Williamson had 20 and the New Orleans Pelicans beat the Utah Jazz 129-118 on Thursday night to open a two-game set. The teams will meet again in Salt Lake City on Saturday night. The Pelicans, who opened a six-game trip, have won three straight and five of seven to improve to 18-42. Bey was 14 of 20 from the field, making 5 of 9 3-pointers, and hit all nine of his free throws. Williamson was 9 of 14 from the floor. Pelicans point guard Dejounte Murray added 17 points and nine assists in his second straight game after missing more than a year because of a torn right Achilles. Ace Bailey led Utah with 23 points, and Brice Sensabaugh had 20. The short-handed Jazz have lost four straight to fall to 18-41. Utah star Lauri Markkanen was injured in practice Wednesday, and was held out of the game because of a sprained right ankle and right hip impingement. NHL-leading Avalanche beat Mammoth 4-2 in return from Olympic break | Sports

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — U.S. Olympian Brock Nelson scored his 30th goal of the season in Colorado’s four-goal second period and the NHL-leading Avalanche beat the Utah Mammoth 4-2 on Wednesday night. Parker Kelly, Victor Olofsson and Martin Necas also scored and Scott Wedgewood made 28 saves for Colorado in the first game for both teams following the three-week break for the OIympics. Nelson scored on a slap shot to make it 3-1 with 7:40 left in the second. With Canadian Olympian Nathan MacKinnon sitting out for the Avs, Nelson moved up to center the top line with Necas and Gabriel Landeskog. Dylan Guenther scored twice in the second for Utah. Karel Vejmelka stopped 21 shots for the Mammoth. Kelly opened the scoring at 3:26 of the second, splitting two defenders and snapping the puck around Vejmelka’s side. Olofsson followed with another snap shot six minutes later. Logan Cooley returned for Utah after missing 28 games because of a lower-body injury. Utah State gives up season-worst 89 points in blowout loss to San Diego State | Sports

For the second game in a row, Utah State had a chance to take a commanding lead in the race for the Mountain West title. But, also for a second consecutive game, the Aggies blew that chance, this time with a 89-72 defeat at San Diego State. It’s the most points given up by the Aggies this year and second-most allowed by USU in the Jerrod Calhoun era (highest was 93 at Colorado State in 2024-25). Utah State entered the game with a one-game lead over San Diego State in the conference standings, but with the loss the two teams are now tied for first place with New Mexico one back back in third. But the Aztecs had far more to gain in this game than the Aggies had to lose. SDSU was on a two-game losing streak with its at-large NCAA hopes all but dashed by those losses. A win over Utah State would revitalize that and the Aztecs were fully aware of that. “They were just hungrier than us.
