Thompson scores 23 points, including the 17,000th of his career, as Mavericks beat the Jazz 138-120 | Sports

DALLAS (AP) — Klay Thompson scored all 23 of his points in the first half, including the 17,000th of his career, and six Mavericks scored in double figures in a 138-120 win over Utah on Saturday night as Dallas completed a two-game sweep of the Jazz. Dallas and Utah have played three times in 10 days. Utah won at home on January 8, 114-112. Dallas won 144-122 on Thursday. The Mavericks were without Cooper Flagg (left ankle sprain) for a second straight game and the first injury absences of his rookie season. Dallas was also missing Anthony Davis (finger) and Kyrie Irving (knee) and forward P.J. Washington for personal reasons. The rest of the Mavericks proved to be more than enough against the Jazz for a second straight game. Thompson, coming off the bench, had a pair of 3-pointers and then hit a turnaround jumper in the lane with just under five minutes left in the first quarter to reach the 17,000-point plateau. He shot 7 for 12 overall and 6 for 11 from 3-point distance and led the Mavs in scoring for the second straight game in Flagg’s absence after scoring a season-best 26 in Thursday’s win. Utah State gymnastics defeats No. 23 Southern Utah 195.700-195.550 | Sports

LOGAN, Utah – Utah State’s gymnastics team defeated No. 23 Southern Utah 195.700-195.550 in its home opener here on Saturday at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum. It is the second time in six days that USU has topped SUU.  Utah State posted nine career highs during the meet and claimed three of the four event titles. Junior Nyla Morabito won vault with a career-high-tying 9.850. Junior Isabella Vater won bars with a career-high 9.850. Freshman Anabelle Dewey won floor with a career-high 9.825.  Sophomore Olivia Orengo competed in the all-around for Utah State and notched 39.050, tying her second-highest all-around score. With the win, Utah State improved to 3-1 for its best start to a season since the 2022 squad opened with a 4-1 record. Utah State began the meet on vault and scored a season-high 48.950, followed by 48.925 on bars, a season-high-tying 48.925 on beam and 48.900 on floor. Utah State women’s basketball loses to Boise State, 76-60 | Sports

LOGAN, Utah – Utah State women’s basketball fell to Boise State, 76-60, on Saturday night at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.  Both teams struggled offensively in the early going before senior guard Karyn Sanford’s layup got the Aggies on the board at the 8:18 mark. USU got out to a 6-2 lead before Boise State went on a 17-1 first quarter run. Two 3-pointers by sophomore guard Elise Livingston pulled the Aggies back to a 22-15 deficit at the end of the first quarter. Both teams went back-and-forth during a hard-fought second quarter, with the Broncos taking a 38-30 advantage into halftime. Five quick points from senior forward Sophie Sene helped USU pull within one point midway through the third quarter. USU’s offense went cold from that point onward, however, as the Aggies shot 1-of-12 from the floor during a 12-minute stretch where the Broncos regained control of the game with a 27-4 run. Livingston led the team with 17 points, including 13 in the opening half, on 4-of-9 shooting from the floor and a perfect 6-of-6 showing from the charity stripe. Nate Schmidt scores twice to help Mammoth beat Kraken 6-3 | Sports

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Nate Schmidt scored two goals and assisted on two others to lead the Utah Mammoth to a 6-3 victory over the Seattle Kraken on Saturday. Lawson Crouse added a goal and two assists to help Utah win its third straight and for the sixth time in seven games. Kevin Stenlund, Nick Schmaltz and Barrett Hayton also scored for the Mammoth and Karel Vejmelka made 18 stops. Jordan Eberle, Matty Beniers, and Chandler Stephenson scored goals for the Kraken, who lost their third straight and are 1-3-2 over their last six. Philipp Grubauer had 24 saves. Schmidt snapped the puck past Ryker Evans’ stick and Grubauer’s glove with 5:30 left in the third after the Kraken had erased a two-goal deficit late in the second period to tie it at 3. Eberle boosted his season tally to 17 goals only 69 seconds into the game, squeezing a backhand shot over Vejmelka’s shoulder to put Seattle up 1-0.
