Utah State will, for the first time this season, face a team with a winning record in conference play. The Nevada Wolf Pack will come into the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum with only one loss to a Mountain West team (and it was to a San Diego State team that’s 5-0 in MW play). Rankings haven’t yet recognized Nevada as a serious threat for contention in the Mountain West, but the standings and on-court action won’t be dictated by numbers on spreadsheets. The red-hot Aggies will have to be at their best on Wednesday if they want to remain undefeated in Mountain West play.
Here’s all of the necessary info ahead of this game for the Aggies.

Availability Report
The following is drawn from the official availability reports posted by the Mountain West. Per-game stats, if applicable, are included in parenthesis.
UTAH STATE
NEVADA
- Joel Armotrading (6.1 pts, 5.1 reb) – OUT
- Tyler Rolison (5.8 pts. 2.7 ast)- QUESTIONABLE
Nevada will potentially be without two of its rotation players, though one has been out for the majority of the season already. Joel Armotrading, a 6-foot-10 senior forward, left the Wolf Pack’s game against Washington on Nov. 27 with a chest injury and has not played since. Tyler Rolison, a 6-foot guard and three-year veteran of this Nevada team, had to leave Nevada’s most recent game against Wyoming after playing just one minute due to a back injury. Armotrading will not play while Rolison’s status is still up in the air.
Utah State Keys to Victory
Stay in front of the ball
Nevada is a team filled with quick guards capable of getting downhill quick and shooting well from the outside. Teams like that are very difficult to guard in both the half court and in transition. Despite Nevada not having much size and length among its bigs (forward Elijah Price is the tallest rotation player at 6-foot-9), they have players on the wing with enough length and speed to create potential matchup problems. This has allowed the Wolf Pack to rank 10th in the nation in free throw rate. The Aggies have had their issues with sending opponents to the free-throw line, ranking 277th in free throw rate defense. Fouls come from poor defense and drawing contact will be something Nevada tries hard to do against an aggressive USU defense.
Dominate the glass
This hasn’t been too much of an issue for the Aggies as they’ve been a very solid team in the paint. Nevada has not and therein lies a path to controlling this game. As noted, the Wolf Pack do not have size and it’s led to them ranking somewhat poorly in defensive rebounding percentage. Utah State is 21st in offensive rebounding percentage and will thus be crashing the glass all night looking to abuse the Nevada defense.
Execute in the halfcourt
It’s likely that Utah State isn’t going to get much transition offense in this game. Nevada is one of the best teams in the country at not turning the ball over. That’s going to make for a slower game and more halfcourt sets for the Aggies. At times, halfcourt offense has been a minor issues, although of late the Aggies have improved. Continuing that improvement, or at least maintaining the gains thus far, will be key in this game.
