Jazz bounce back after a 55-point loss and beat Cavaliers 123-112 | Sports

CLEVELAND (AP) — Keyonte George scored 32 points, Lauri Markkanen added 28 and the Utah Jazz bounced back after a 55-point loss and defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers 123-112 Monday night. George had 16 points during the third quarter, when Utah rallied from a 10-point deficit and regained control and began its five-game road trip with a victory. George also was 12 of 12 at the free throw line and had nine assists. The win was the Jazz’s second in their past eight games and came two nights after a 150-95 loss to the Charlotte Hornets, the second-largest by scoring margin in franchise history and the biggest since they moved from New Orleans in 1979. Markkanen, 10th in the league in scoring at 27.8 points per game, also had 12 rebounds. Jusuf Nurkik, who missed the last two games due to a toe injury, had 11 points and 17 rebounds. Darius Garland led Cleveland with 23 points and Donovan Mitchell scored 21. The Cavaliers have dropped two of three. The Cavaliers trailed by 17 points midway through the first quarter and 46-36 before going on a 26-8 run over the last 7:45 of the second quarter to take a 62-54 lead

Utah State gymnastics scores 195.825 to finish second at Best of Utah Meet | Sports

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah – Utah State’s gymnastics team wasted no time delivering a stellar performance as the Aggies finished second at the Les Olson IT Best of Utah Meet held here at the Maverik Center on Monday with a 195.825. That score is its second-highest season-opening score in program history. It is just the second time in the seven-year history of the event that USU has placed second. No. 5 Utah won the quad meet with 197.300, followed by Utah State (195.825), BYU (195.725) and Southern Utah (195.675).  Utah State began the meet on vault and scored 48.900, followed by 49.000 on bars, 48.925 on beam and 49.000 on floor. Junior Sydney Jelen was named the Utah State Most Valuable Performer as she scored a career-high 9.850 on bars and 9.800 on beam. Can Utah State star guard MJ Collins get a fifth season of eligibility? | Sports

Last Thursday, both Utah State head coach Jerrod Calhoun and senior guard MJ Collins made reference to the possibility that a shift in eligibility rules could occur that would enable Collins to play a fifth season. That rule change is the five-year rule that would eliminate redshirts and eligibility waivers in favor of just giving all athletes a blanket five seasons to play no matter what happens within them. “MJ texted me last night, said, ‘Looks like we’ll be back together for another year.’ I guess some 25 year old guy got eligible,” Calhoun said. Such a rule change would allow a fifth season for Collins because he never utilized his redshirt, nor received a medical redshirt. His actual time in collegiate basketball matches with his eligibility clock. Two years at Virginia Tech from 2022 to 2024, one year at Vanderbilt in 2024-25 and now a fourth season at Utah State this year.   Exactly what recent news prompted Collins to believe that such a rule is imminent is unsure, but there have been plenty of reports indicating the opposite.
