Nuggets jump out to a 19-0 lead and rout the Jazz 135-112 | Sports

DENVER (AP) — Jamal Murray and the Denver Nuggets raced out to a 19-0 lead in the opening four minutes and tied a franchise record for 3-pointers with 24, cruising to a 135-112 victory over the Utah Jazz on Monday night. It was the second time in 17 days that Utah got down big before hitting a shot or a free throw. The New York Knicks led the Jazz 23-0 on their way to a 146-112 win on Dec. 5. The biggest run to open an NBA game was 29-0 by the Los Angeles Lakers against Sacramento on Feb. 4, 1987. Denver shot 68.2% in the first quarter and made 15 of 28 from 3-point range in the first half, five by Murray. He scored 27 points and Cameron Johnson went 6 of 6 from deep to finish with 20. Nikola Jokic had 14 points, 13 rebounds and 13 assists, and Peyton Watson scored 20 after missing two games. Jokic got his 14th triple-double of the season and 178th of his career when he fed Watson for a layup with 7:10 left in the third quarter. Lauri Markkanen had 27 points and Keyonte George scored 20 for Utah, which has

Utah State offense struggles early, falls to Washington State in Potato Bowl | Sports

BOISE, Idaho— Although Utah State has had a significant amount of familiarity with the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, wins in said bowl continue to be elusive. In the Aggies’ sixth appearance in the Boise-based bowl Monday they lost for a fifth time, 34-21 to Washington State. For much of the game, it appeared as though Utah State would struggle to score any points as it gained just 49 yards in the first half quarters and didn’t score until there were only 17 minutes left in the game. The Aggies flirted with putting up the fewest points in Potato Bowl history (record was and remains 10 by Tulsa in the 2003 season). Utah State head coach Bronco Mendenhall praised Washington State’s defense, which entered the game as the 27th-best team in the nation in points allowed per game. “Really strong scheme. Really good players that execute well within that,” Mendenhall said. “They were consistently better, just really in most circumstances until the very end where we were able to kind of make a last-minute push. And so I was impressed and they were as advertised for sure.” Utah State’s reliance on All-MW quarterback Bryson Barnes perhaps became its weakness. The Aggies’

How Bronco Mendenhall took Utah State from a potential bowl ban to the Potato Bowl | Sports

When Utah State football head coach Bronco Mendenhall interviewed for and took the job of head coach in Logan, he wasn’t given the prettiest picture of the state of the Aggies gridiron program. Sure, on the outside most could see a team that had just gone through a 4-8 season, and also that Utah State hadn’t posted a winning campaign since 2021. But surely things weren’t that bad, right? “I was told some pretty harsh things about the state of the program and the state of the institution,” Mendenhall said, “including there’s no chance that we’d be able to make a bowl. There would be a bowl ban because the academics weren’t strong enough. That was stated multiple times. There won’t be a chance to play post-season.” These concerns over academics played a role in the firing of Mendenhall’s predecessor, Blake Anderson. Former USU President Elizabeth Cantwell and former Director of Athletics Diana Sabau, cited the NCAA’s Academic Performance Rate (APR) metric in documents outlining their reason for dismissing Anderson. According to those documents, sent by Assistant Utah Attorney General Jaqualin Friend Peterson to Anderson’s legal team, Utah State had seen a decline in its APR from 965 to 899. Furthermore, according to Peterson’s
