Aggies extend Martins through 2030 | Sports

LOGAN, Utah – Utah State University Vice President and Director of Athletics Cameron Walker announced Friday a contract extension for women’s soccer head coach Manny Martins, extending his tenure through the 2030 season. Martins and the women’s soccer program are coming off their third-consecutive Mountain West Tournament championship and NCAA Tournament appearance.

In his five years at the helm, Utah State has posted an overall record of 63-26-24 (.664) with a 31-12-11 (.657) mark in conference play. His .657 winning percentage in conference play ranks second in Mountain West history. Under Martins, the Aggies have dominated at home, amassing a 36-5-10 record, including an undefeated 13-0-5 stretch over the last two seasons.

“Manny reflects the standard we are building at Utah State, striving for competitive excellence and winning with integrity,” Walker said. “Keeping him in Logan is critical to our department’s progress and the elevation of our soccer program, and we look forward to building on the culture of winning he has brought to the program.”

Despite an injury-plagued season, Martins again demonstrated his coaching prowess, guiding the Aggies to their third straight Mountain West Tournament title. In the final 10 games before its first-round NCAA Tournament matchup, USU lost just once and outscored opponents by a combined 26-8.

“Utah State and the Cache Valley community feel like home,” Martins said. “I’m incredibly excited to continue our winning traditions and build on the momentum and championships our program has earned. I look forward to leading the program as we continue to compete for titles in both the Pac-12 and on the national stages.”

Utah State finished the 2024 campaign 18-1-5, winning a program-record 18 matches and spending eight weeks in the top 25, climbing as high as No. 7 in the United Soccer Coaches poll. The No. 7 ranking tied the highest mark by any Utah State team in any sport and was the best since the men’s basketball team also reached No. 7 in 1961.

Martins and his coaching staff were named the 2024 United Soccer Coaches NCAA Pacific Region Coaching Staff of the Year, marking the second straight year the USU staff earned the honor.

Utah State set several records in 2024, including program bests for wins (18), goals (62), assists (65), points (189) and shutouts (15).

In 2023, Martins led the Aggies to their first Mountain West title, capturing the tournament championship and qualifying for the program’s third NCAA Tournament appearance in history.

Overall, Martins has helped guide 21 players to all-Mountain West honors and eight to all-region accolades, including 2024 Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year Kaitlyn Richins and 2023 MW Defensive Player of the Year Kelsey Kaufusi. He has been named Mountain West Coach of the Year twice.

Martins has had four players sign professional contracts, one player drafted into the NWSL, and three players invited to the US National Team camps.

In the classroom, 80 players have earned Mountain West Scholar-Athlete recognition, and 74 have been named to Academic All-Mountain West teams.
