Utah State staves off 18-point rally by VCU, claims 80-77 victory in Texas | Sports

As the Aggies advanced the ball up the court with 34 seconds to play in just their second game of the season, they were in near free-fall. Just three short minutes ago they led VCU by 13, a further eight minutes before that Utah State had been up 18. The good ‘ol fashioned ESPN odds of winning calculator was spitting out chances north of 99 percent for an Aggie victory. But as the clock ticked under a half-minute, the score sat tied 76-all. VCU had surged back, outscoring the Aggies 14-1 in the previous few minutes to turn a disaster of an outing for the Rams into a chance for what at one point seemed like impossible victory. USU head coach Jerrod Calhoun had called his final timeout of regulation in the moment before this play, and drew up a play looking for one of his best playmakers to go out there and make something happen. MJ Collins had eclipsed 20 points already by this stage, leading the way in scoring, with Mason Falslev only a few points behind him at 18. There were options for the Aggies on that play. “The initial plan was to get someone getting downhill,”

As a result, VCU has quite a few new faces on the bench and on the court, much like the Aggies have plenty of new faces (though more on the court than on the bench). Aggies defeat Air Force to advance to third-straight Mountain West title game | Sports

BOISE, Idaho — Utah State soccer (10-6-5, 5-2-3 MW) won an overtime thriller to punch its ticket to its third-straight Mountain West Tournament championship game Wednesday night at the Boas Soccer Complex in Boise, defeating 2-seed Air Force 1-0 in the semifinal round.  The Aggies used 97th minute heroics from sophomore midfielder Rachel Reitz, who scored the golden goal off of a corner kick sent into the box by graduate midfielder Rine Yonaha. After a single touch by freshman forward Kunie Hirai, who scored the team’s lone goal in the quarterfinal round win over New Mexico, Reitz connected with a right-footer past the keeper. This was the first goal of Reitz’s career.  In a game which began as a defensive battle, the sides combined for just four total shots with a single shot on goal in the first half of action. Utah State seemingly broke through in the 73rd minute when a foul called just outside of the 18-yard box resulted in a free kick, which was delivered cleanly into the top corner of the net by Yonaha. After the fact, however, a review of the foul was allowed which wiped the Aggie goal off the board.  Utah State held Air

LOGAN, Utah – In another home matchup against the second-place team in the conference, Utah State volleyball reaffirmed its stranglehold on first place, defeating Colorado State, 3-1 (25-15, 19-25, 28-26, 25-22), on Thursday night at the Wayne Estes Center.   With the victory, the Aggies now hold a three-game lead in the Mountain West standings with five matches to play.
